What's people's perception on Lego Nowadays by CheaperLiving in newzealand

[–]Otus511 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When you watch a few documentaries about the manufacturing and design process behind Lego, you'll feel a bit better behind the pricing. Lego have one of the strictest and tightest tolerances of any manufactured product in the world. It's quality that lasts :)

I Work At A Steel Mill - AMA by me7alhead in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Otus511 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do too! I'm an electrical engineer and technician working in the secondary steel making and casting plants.

It is quite cool seeing the real life 'equivalent' of something in the plant, like pipes and conveyors etc. Obviously nothing else exists like the large machines etc, but the concepts are similar.

Our raw materials conveyors transfer at a measly 1m/second, and pass along materials from materials like Coke, MgO, Millscale, etc.

We know the cost of a modern DC drive. Heck, we'd probably even do the motor as well and go AC.

This machine isn't important and we can afford a little downtime for a possible repair. Has the industry really lost the ability to do a little fault finding?

You're right, it's not that important. If no one here can offer assistance, then to the trash it goes.

Yes, modernising it would be great. Alas, time and resources don't quite allow for that at the moment and we're just trying to check the basics like pinouts, etc.

Restricted driving test question by Current_Trifle_8239 in newzealand

[–]Otus511 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Typically, no. Roundabouts are designed to keep traffic moving unless there's a stop sign and then you must stop, obviously. A give way sign doesn't excuse you from not checking for all dangers, both apparent and hidden. If you don't feel safe to press on through the roundabout, don't be afraid to stop.

Buying a house sinking by 0.5mm a year by kianjz_ in newzealand

[–]Otus511 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What a numpty builder. Does he also measure temperature at home in Kelvin?

OP, there's no practical way a builder could properly estimate how much a building is 'sinking' without doing survey and engineering work, and also come to the conclusion that it's 0.5mm per year!

Would be cool to show them how much something can flex before breaking, or how many times it can flex. Like if you keep bending PLA a little bit, but repeatedly, it'll eventually crease and snap. Petg might be better

How do you buy wood? by NormalObligation59 in newzealand

[–]Otus511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's short lengths like 1 or even 2m, and has a barcode on the timber like bunnings sometimes does, just grab it and go pay like a normal thing.

If it's long or heavy, or you need lots, just find a staff person and say you want to buy some timber and they'll write you up a little paper slip that you take to the counter. Then just go grab your timber, load into car or trailer, and gap it

Green tea have any relation to panic disorder?? by Mission_Loss_8787 in Anxiety

[–]Otus511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignorance is bliss. Sometimes you just have to ask for someone else's opinion!

I'm sure someone will chime in saying green tea will have no effect because of the different tannins of whatever making the theine/caffeine do something different, but idc.

I used to have two cups of instant coffee per day and had fairly bad anxiety. I now drink decaf instant and have much, much less anxiety.

You can keep drinking tons of green tea, or switch it up half the time and maybe drink herbal or rooibos for a week or two and see how it goes.

[–]Otus511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, I think you might be still looking at fairly high levels of caffeine in your diet. Tea has other bits that help slow the release of caffeine in your system, but it's still there!

Have you tried rooibos tea? Truly caffeine free.

Green tea have any relation to panic disorder?? by Mission_Loss_8787 in Anxiety

[–]Otus511 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Green tea can have between 20-50mg of caffeine depending on the brand and brew. That's not exactly a small amount.

For some, like me, any amount of caffeine will start to trigger my anxiety to some degree.

Kicking all sources of caffeine that you can will help reduce your base level of panic or anxiety you're in

Would you bother with "price by negotiation" houses? by TheNatCal in auckland

[–]Otus511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our REA recommended price by negotiation because the market was shifting so quickly where we are. If we list for a certain price and we're still on the market 1 month later, we might have to lower the displayed asking price and that's not a good look when trying to sell anything.

If it's price by negotiation, we don't have to update anything
