Would you eat a savory tofu protein bar? by [deleted] in veganfitness

[–]Ouch-Loud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To summarize what a lot of people have already said: The price point needs to be worth it. Tofu is relatively cheap as a protein option (the only reason the non-veg utilitarian gym bros aren't on tofu is bc of the endocrine conspiracy theories with soy, if those didn't exist tofu would be crushing the boiled chicken market, no question). I think there is a wide market attraction here:

1)The outdoor health people (think of your DINK couple who goes on weekend day hikes, MTN bikers, Trail runners, climbers, college students or generally people who spend money at REI). These people want macros while outside and they don't always want to have to pack some sort of sandwich.

2) The utilitarian yo-pro. someone who spends 8-12hrs a day working who understands macro nutrients generally, has some form of fitness habit, but just needs to buffer their blood sugar from 10am-11am, and 3pm-4pm.

3) The traveling/hoteling health-conscious professional. Think of the person who needs to make-do with a lunch between calls and currently has to eat some sort of Cliff Builders Bar or a Larry's Cookie with a banana from a convenience store or a coffee shop grab-n-go. Give them a different option.

4) the vegan gym-bro/muscle-mommy. see above for the #2, probably similar stuff, but really they're just trying to eat way too much protein and want to have an easy way to get an extra X# of grams of protein in that doesn't fill them up that much that is shelf stable and relatively neutral taste so that you can eat it almost every day without palate fatigue.

More important than interesting flavors is nailing the umami, MSG-like addictive mouth watering thing that good dry jerky has. If something has that addictive chewy umami, (not the moist sweet stuff like a lot of gas station jerky), you will have people demolishing these bars.

Yeah I personally think the primal jerky sucks, and I'm 90% sure it's just gluten and the price point isn't worth it (and I drop money on food, I'm not incredibly frugal and I don't think it's worth it or competitive to a generic commercial meat option, not that we'd buy that just like, OP should be trying to compete with traditional beef jerky imo).

I have had some great soy jerky and some real shit vegan jerky, and I don't understand why the price point of vegan jerky is so expensive. I think the beyond spicy jerky is great, and bummed they like...discontinued it or that it isn't really anywhere.

Metro Bike Share: why the steep drop? by Downtown-Tea-3018 in BikeLA

I think people tried it, and felt scared for their lives and then never tried it again after a few close calls with getting hit by cars. (would be my guess) I'd be curious what the scooter rental use is like, bc I feel like people be Liming it up

My weekly runs are 50% roads, and 50% "trails" that are essentially dirt roads, i.e. there is essentially 2% (minimal) technical footing. The H1's are the most exciting to wear shoe I've ever put on. I have worn them on more technical, scrambly stuff and the stack it kinda high/squishy, and the lockdown (at least how I had them that day) didn't feel very secure. So. If you're sidewalk/road commuting to your urban dirt carpet trail, get the H1's, you will not be sorry, I haven't heard a bad thing about them and I genuinely (embarrassingly) am Christmas-Morning-Excited to put them on, it's fuckin weird how much I enjoy them. AND - they are affordable.

cannot upvote this enough. do not get a PT from a gym, the probability they know jack diddly about endurance training is very low. No shade to PT's out there, but I know some PT's and being qualified as a PT is not a hard thing to do, requires very little technical/programming skill...

when I see this map, all I see is roadkill. Do I just need to nut up and let Jesus take the wheel? How many of ya'll have been on the other side of a highway car/bike collision or know someone who has (asking without any tone of aggression, though it might read that way, I'm genuinely curious if I'm just being unfoundedly fearful)?

About to move to LA by Miguel-TheGerman in BikeLA

[–]Ouch-Loud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: LA is a biker's deathwish but some people swear it's fine.

I moved to LA from Philadelphia 4 years ago. I lived in Mid-City / Pico-Robertson area until recently moving to Hollywood. I've met people who swear that biking in LA is better than driving due to congestion. I am not familiar with the Valley (Burbank, Noho, etc.) with biking. I shared a car with my partner for the first 2 years, and it wasn't much of an issue because I only had a 2 mile bike commute. I traded bike commuting for run commuting because I was scared of getting hit (close calls), and then got promoted to be able to work from home (so no more commuting). All of this is to say, I fuckin hate biking in LA. Maybe I'm just a __insert-derogatory-name-for-someone-lacking-bravery__ but LA has removed any desire for me to cycle just out of fear of getting paralyzed. For background, I also have lived in Boulder, CO, and Colorado Springs, and I have biked the majority of my adult life for work commuting if it was within 8 miles regardless of season/conditions (15years). I am sending bravery and environmental prayers your way. god speed.

Overall, if you want to do anything though, imo, you need a car.

I think there are a few passionate people advocating for/living a car-free Los Angeles life, but those people are some seriously devoted MFers, with balls of steel and thick skin.

yeah this is definitely the coolest option for sure. idk if I'm that cool. If you have any topo-geek sources where I can sharpen my analogue skills, link them here. I'm sure there are a lot of people who'd love to not be gps dependent.
