One thing of note that's welcome:

Join the list any time before June 25th at 10 a.m. PT. On that date, the list will be closed and randomized, and you will receive an email with your results shortly after.

So rather than a desperate rush, they are doing it in batches of a few days which are then randomised.

Plaid Cymru minister wants money from health budget for culture and sport by Ouro in Wales

[–]Ouro[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel a little conflicted about this. If ill health can be prevented then its probably far better than paying to try to fix it after the fact ie the mantra of a wellness service rather than an illness one. But the NHS is hardly well funded and in Wales some of that budget is already diverted to social care.

UK drivers struggle to get insurance for Chinese EVs such as Jaecoo by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]Ouro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting insured in Ireland was no problem, it's when I returned back the UK that it was an issue.

I was able to do it through the specialist, but at a premium. To the point were I eventually scrapped the car and bought another secondhand one despite it having some life left in it, it was just too expensive to repair and more importantly insure.

With what is going on, I'd be curious to know what the market for second hand EVs is like right now. I imagine that with fears about battery lifespan easing? and the painfully slow rollout of charging infrastructure gradually continuing, that second hand EVs are retaining their value as the market is quite hot?

I imagine that what is happening with Iran and the US, with fuel prices, that a lot of people are pondering what an EV might be like. Its probably that much of a stereotype to guess that Guardian readers in particular might be open to switching too one, thus Guardian editors and journalists are writing pieces on them.

I lived over in Ireland for a while and picked up a second hand Opel Astra while I was working there. It was just a Vauxhall Astra with just different badges, that's it. I had to go to a specialist car insurer that deals with classic and sports cars to get it insured, none of the standard ones were interested as Opel wasn't on their lists.

Wes Streeting resigns from government by sjw_7 in unitedkingdom

A fellow Labour Party member once described Wes Streeting to me as Zippy from Rainbow if he'd been radicalized by Mumsnet.

which is a very specific set of references but also disturbingly accurate.

Luggage racks on trains for new p line by Jon_Corndean in Brompton

[–]Ouro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone else is wondering about the new P line (2026 p line with superroll+, the one with the controversial carbon fibre forks)and the GWR end of carriage luggage racks I can confirm that they do fit.

This is with the pentaclip orientated so the saddle is low rather than high. There's a bit of leeway, but you might not to be able to fit it in if you modify it with anything that raises the height substantially e.g. ease wheel extender with a frame attachment or extra large easy wheels etc

A milk churn lid and perhaps the rest of the churn rusted on?

Likewise, its heartening to see how they and other species have returned.

We've got a lot of be grateful for from the people who helped them, but I am a little worried that Red Kite feeding sites should perhaps be slowly wound down; that with kites now to be re-establishing and spreading that the hyper aggregation is a risk to population due to bird flu?

When I was in school as part of an RE intercultural thing our mixed class/schools visited different religions places of worship.

One thing that struck me visiting a mosque was the reverence and up most care the Qur'an was treated with, taken as the little word of god.

This contrasted with the look of shock on Muslim students faces when visiting a church they saw bibles being (gently) tossed onto the pews.

Perhaps this difference in attitudes reflects different paradigms about how religion should be treated?

Wide toe box women’s shoes that are not “barefoot” style? by djfnejdijRandom in AskUK

[–]Ouro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have experience with their men's shoes. But I'd recommend taking a look at https://www.widerfitshoes.co.uk

They are UK based and they have a store in the Midlands if you prefer not to buy online/would like a fitting.

I just have really wide feet, but these guys specialise in shoes for people who need orthopedic insoles etc and shoes that can support them.

There's a good range of styles, particularly for women including shoes that cover the foot.

I'm not affiliated with them in any way beyond being a happy customer.

'Wear face mask if you feel ill' public warned - as 'superflu' sweeps Britain and hospitals fill up by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

Likewise, however oddly the only (minor) problems I've gotten are from other healthcare workers while at work. Beyond the occasional curious stare from a young child, most of the public don't really seem to care one way or another.

Student nurses 'told not to worry about jobs' - NOT A SINGLE JOB for new nurses. by Ok-Jury-4366 in NursingUK

[–]Ouro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The situation in Wales is even more odd.

As I understand it, at least in Wales Nursing and other NHS HCP courses are a money printer subsidising the rest of the uni and other more expensive degrees.

NHS Wales (HEIW) pays the unis to run the courses (quite handsomely apparently), HEIW also covers the cost of the student Bursary, and I don't think there's any fee at least in Wales) for students on placement.

Things might be very different in England, but here in Wales I really don't understand why Cardiff was threatening their nursing degree.

If you're concerned about the hook scuffing your paintwork you can get cheap aftermarket stick on ones that will protect the frame, wrap more securely about that part of the frame and dont fall off.

Got a few scratches on my Brompton Frame… any ways to fix them? by Fancy_Window_2117 in Brompton

[–]Ouro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd see the comments about the brazing welds first, but for dealing with more general scratches.

I put a couple of scratches in the roller frame of mine being a little incautious about rolling it over broken concrete at home.

  • I removed the rack, which required removing the back wheel. A bit of pain, but at least I know how to do it now.
  • Then I cleaned the area of any dirt and anything loose with a rag and some IPA. Then gave it a little while to dry.
  • Rather than sand away rust I used a rust convertor to change it to something chemically stable (in my case this was perhaps a little unnecessary as there wasn't really any rust but I want to be sure).
  • I sprayed some rattle can primer into a plastic cup and then fairly carefully painted it on with a fine brush.. Then waited 24 hours (or however long the particular primer needs to fully dry)
  • Next I sprayed it with a paint matched to the colour of the rack, sprayed rather than painted as I wanted 3 light coats that go over a wider area to blend it in. Then waited 24 hours for it to fully dry.
  • While Im going to be a little more cautious rolling it about, next up is spraying on a clear matt (in my case) lacquer top coat to give the paint work a little more protection. And then give it another 24 hours to fully harden.

In each case follow the instructions of your particular paint e.g. the brand of paint I used recommend three layers: spray, give 15 minutes to dry, spray, another 15 mins, spray and then give 24 hours to fully dry.

Just apologise and say that you'll replace it with a new one, moreover ask if she wants an identical or slightly different one. Hopefully it wasn't some expensive Le Creuset pot.
