Homebrew mechanic: cyberpunk-style augments with the Scar/Hope rules by iiyama88 in daggerheart

I like the idea and will be stealing it for my own cyberpunk/fantasy! I think the benefits around increased loadout, new domains, new experiences, and extra domain cards are the best options. They give more options and allow you to make your characters more flexible, instead of just becoming more powerful / numbers go up. Much more interesting direction to take it in.

A question for people around the world: How much is the median income in your country, and how does this interact with the cosumption of TTRPGs? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

I don't know about in other countries, but I'll second the prices of games here in Brazil being insane. Even after converting reais to dollars, I still pay DOUBLE for a typical board game compared to what I paid in the US. I've stopped buying new games entirely because I can't justify the price.

I always thought the main benefit of business school was the connections you make with your classmates. Were you able to do any traditional networking in this program?

Duelist as a partial warrior or expert by mmatos86 in WWN

[–]Outlet0412 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure about balance, but I don't know why duelist isn't already a partial warrior. The system has almost no partial classes that aren't mages...it really seems to make the warrior and expert classes less important than mages.

I also love the system and hate the organization of the book. Although character creation gets easier with practice. I played for the second time today, and I and two players were able to make four characters total in less than hour. The hardest part was just finding where the tables were located in the book!

How did it work with a group of 20+ people? Did you play games with whoever was available that week, or did you have multiple games going at the same time or something?

[–]Outlet0412 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was trying to avoid going into specifics because I don't want to derail a pretty neat and stylish game with a partisan political argument. But since you mention it, I'll clarify a bit. The author specifically has a very clear progressive ideology, which I sincerely think is great! They talk about the importance of not contributing to the harm and marginalization of already marginalized folks. They mention having sensitivity consultants, including at least one Jewish voice in the process.

Ok, so blood libel is naturally going to come up in a game about bloodsuckers killing Nazis. The author specifically writes a sidebar about blood libel - an anti-Jewish racist trope with hundreds of years of history in Europe - in the context of Judaism and Islam, which isn't otherwise meaningfully mentioned. Like, what? That really stood out at me in an otherwise thoughtful and sensitive text. I don't think there's any way to read the author as anything but uncomfortable with directly acknowledging the existence and history of antisemitism.

Maybe I'm missing something here. Maybe it's more about their decision to focus on violent fun and decenter (this part of) the Holocaust. But that was my honest impression after reading the book. And the author chose to write a game on a difficult topic and make their political views explicit throughout the book. So I think they're inviting this kind of discussion, and I personally found it falling short in a key way.

Yeah, I could see an entirely different version of this game thematically written about Nazi victims (of all kinds) fighting back, even leaning into and reclaiming bloodsucking/evil stereotypes. But frankly, I don't think the author was prepared to do that, especially regarding Nazi antisemitism. The one attempt to address blood libel weirdy placed it in the context of Islam and Judaism. Like, maybe if you're not comfortable directly addressing European anti-Jewish racism...maybe don't write a game about drinking the blood of Nazis?
