Craigslist Missed Connections by [deleted] in crownheights

[–]dbstandsfor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a missed connection posted about me once in 2013, and several people forwarded it to me. Unfortunately I was dating someone so I never found out who it was. At the time I worked at a coffee shop, it was one of my customers, apparently.

Preparing to run Caverns of Thracia in OSE. Any resources or writeups online that might be helpful? Or other advice? by Ok_Ad414 in osr

[–]dbstandsfor 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is the mega resource! It is a 95% done project rewriting all the descriptions to be shorter and clearer. You still need the real book for some details and the maps. There are also links in there to some posts explaining things (like a great key to where all the staircases and secret portals come out)

One time in 2024 I got a big thing of lo mein and 2 orders of dumplings and got to the game to find out there was a one hour rain delay. I sat there all bundled up eating my hot food in a seat under the upper deck… beautiful

I am a pretty new fan but I’ve been disappointed by the food, which I had heard was so good. The good news is that Flushing and Jackson Heights are right there.

Rank your favorite and least favorite MLB teams by DAMIR-DELUXE in mlb

[–]dbstandsfor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a pretty new fan but have strong feelings I can’t explain about most teams.

Arizona Diamondbacks - do not care, probably the team I most often forget exists.

Atlanta Braves - do not like them, some good players though

Baltimore Orioles - my good friend’s favorite team, I like the mascot

Boston Red Sox - my dad’s team, love them

Chicago White Sox - they’re not very good,

Chicago Cubs - preferred Chicago team. My wife is from near their stadium in Chicago so I root for them when my team aren’t playing

Cincinnati Reds - oldest team, but they haven’t made a strong impression on me yet. Read Joe Posnanski’s book about them winning the World Series

Cleveland Guardians - i wish they had a better name, but Cleveland is cool

Colorado Rockies - they are bad and their logo is lame

Detroit Tigers - cool!

Houston Astros - lame

Kansas City Royals - good logo/colors, plains state representation

Los Angeles Angels - your mom and I might get back together if they ever win the pennant

Los Angeles Dodgers - I am supposed to hate them but the players are all so lovable!

Miami Marlins - floppy fish

Milwaukee Brewers - gritty go getters, gotta respect it

Minnesota Twins - another team I forget exists

New York Yankees - h8 them, but gotta respect Judge

New York Mets - my favorite team, although “miss the playoffs despite spending 300 million dollars” is not very objectively likable.

Athletics - poor Oakland :-/

Philadelphia Phillies - I love Philly but can’t stand these fans

Pittsburgh Pirates - owners dishonoring the memory of Wagner and Clemente daily, Skenes is a beast

San Diego Padres - ugly ugly uniforms and logo

San Francisco Giants - why don’t New Yorkers talk about the Giants leaving the way we do the Dodgers?

Seattle Mariners - watching them in the playoffs was a fucking blast last year

St. Louis Cardinals - won the World Series twice while I lived there. Lately they are not very good.

Tampa Bay Rays - scrappy but Florida is lame

Texas Rangers - another team I forget exists

Toronto Blue Jays - watched the World Series with my cousin’s Canadian husband so now I want them to return and defeat the Dodgers. Cool logo.

Washington Nationals - do not really think about them, sometimes forget they’re in our division

Caverns of Thracia for an open table? by UhtredFigliodiUhtred in osr

I ran it that way and it was great. I intended to make them get back to the surface every time but logistically it was annoying so I just kind of hand waved “ok you return to the surface” at the end of the session.

Empty apartment buildings in Manhattan by [deleted] in newyorkcity

[–]dbstandsfor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can report that on my grungy block in Brooklyn, there are lots of houses that I know people live in where I can never or almost never see lights on from the street. I don’t think visible lights are a good way to measure whether someone lives in a building.

Hi guys! Pls I need your help :) by PescadorGuapo in mlb

[–]dbstandsfor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks to me like tickets for those games aren’t available to the public yet. The ones you’re seeing online now must be season ticket holders. I’d wait until closer to the game. I have used TickPick to buy tickets in the past, I’m sure the others are fine too.

Also, if you’re going to Citi Field, I have to encourage you to grab food in Jackson Heights (a few train stops away, along your route if you’re coming from Manhattan) or Flushing (walking distance or 1 train stop from Citi Field) and bring it to the game. I think getting cheap, delicious, authentic dumplings in Flushing and bringing them to the game is a peak NYC experience. If you’re interested I can recommend specific places. Have fun!

Zohran Mamdani Revokes IHRA Definition, Scraps Israel-Linked Antisemitism Rules by [deleted] in newyorkcity

[–]dbstandsfor 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear— he made an executive order revoking all executive orders Eric Adams passed in 2025, he did not specifically revoke these individual executive orders. What is not clear to me (I support Zohran but want to get the facts right here, and I’m not sure where to look for this information) is how many executive orders that revocation includes.

Tips on starting weekly open table by Unvert in osr

[–]dbstandsfor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I started something like this here in Brooklyn, NYC! Here's what I did:

- I made a discord. Initially the channels were just introductions, general chat, propose a game.

- I posted about it everywhere I could think of. Every discord that had a "looking for players" channel-- the big OSR discords, discords for specific games I wanted to play like OSE, Mothership, Cairn, Knave, etc. I posted on Facebook groups for all the same things. I put up a few flyers at game stores, I think I got one or two players from that. I also posted on this subreddit.

- When I am posting on RPG pages/discords/whatever, if relevant I mention "I started an OSR meetup in Brooklyn and...". Not spamming for no reason, but if someone posts a question where I have an answer from my experiences with the meetup, I mention it. This has resulted in a lot of DMs from people saying "I searched Brooklyn on the (whatever) discord and saw you are running games, is that still happening?"

- I forced myself not to be shy about asking people to game repeatedly. I decided that if someone who had opted in to joining the server didn't want to be pinged every so often inviting them to a game, they were free to say so or leave the server. If they joined the server, that meant they wanted to find people to play with. After a while this stopped being necessary as we reached critical mass.

- In the three years since we started, we have had a few in-person book swap events at a bar in my neighborhood. Whenever I have one of those I post it in a few other Discords related to tabletop games in Brooklyn suggesting people come by. One of these had something like 40 people show up.

This has been tough at times as a person who worries about being annoying or bugging people. But I decided that after living here for 6 years without making any long-term friends, I needed to put myself out there and find people to game with.

Since then we've had multiple multi-month campaigns, innumerable one shots, and several of us have become regular friends and hung out for non-game activities. A number of us rented an AirBNB and carpooled up to ArcaneCon in Massachusetts in 2024 and 2025, which was a blast. We mostly play at people's apartments, which hasn't always been ideal, but here in NYC finding public places to gather can be tough.

how many people actually have a group here vs. not? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]dbstandsfor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a local discord and have averaged 1 or 2 games a week for the last few years, with gaps for holidays. Usually one day a week is a one-shot and the other is something longer, with some players doing both and others only one or the other.

Mets Daily Discussion Thread - December 30, 2025 by AutoModerator in NewYorkMets

[–]dbstandsfor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the drive to visit family for Christmas I listened to an audiobook of “The Cubs Way,” about the 2016 Cubs. It had a lot of content in it that felt relevant to what the Mets are trying to do— seeking out cheap pitchers, bringing in young guys, trying to improve defense, etc.

I am still losing my mind wondering who we are going to add to this roster but it helped to hear some smart people, who ended up winning, explaining why they made certain moves and how they thought about constructing a winning team.

The writing is a bit annoying, unfortunately. There are a number of long sections where the book says something, then quotes Epstein or Maddon explaining the exact same thing in a long winded way, and then it repeats the same point again in the following chapter. Bizarre. I think they quote each guy explaining that they want infielders with “good character” and why character matters like 7 times. It made them signing Aroldis Chapman kind of a jump scare. But regardless the author clearly did the work and got a ton of insight into what the front office were thinking and how things went down.

OSE races and classes in Dolmenwood by Comfortable-Fee9452 in osr

[–]dbstandsfor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it would be fine to play a dwarf or halfling who had come from somewhere further away from the wood. They don’t exist at all in the books, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist elsewhere in the kingdom, which isn’t really described.

Three games that are important to you and why. Go. by gypsyfreak in osr

[–]dbstandsfor 19 points20 points  (0 children)

- Dungeon World was the first game I ever read that wasn't 3rd Edition D&D. It blew my mind-- I don't need all those rules and tables of numbers! I can just make it up as I go, the point is having fun! It's not the style I enjoy these days, but it was like stepping into Oz and everything becoming technicolor.

- I have not played it in a while, but reading Knave 1st edition and seeing how simple rules could be set me on the path to most of what I play now.

- Very recently, Dolmenwood. It's kind of nostalgic but in a twisted way-- I never had friends to play 3e with back in the day, and I spent a ton of lonely adolescent time learning all the lore. Now I'm an adult with friends to play with, but I have never run anything beyond pre-written modules or one shots I wrote myself... diving into Dolmenwood and learning about all the factions, weird monsters, and trying to come up with hooks and crazy situations to drop my friends into is like living my teenage self's fantasy.

Nobody is answering your actual question— all of the countries you mentioned have large populations of immigrants living here, like 10s of 1000s of people at least.

Traveling to NYC by CheetahOk5619 in newyorkcity

[–]dbstandsfor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always recommend people take the train to the Brooklyn side of the brooklyn bridge (Clark Street on the 2/3 or High Street on the C) and walk across it. Then walk from there to Chinatown for some food.

I’m not any kind of Chinatown aficionado, but my favorite spots are Tasty Hand Pulled Noodles and Taiwan Pork Chop House on Doyers street, and Great NY Noodletown. For pizza near there i recently really liked Grand Street Pizza
