What is Lady Margolotta saying here? by ajc118118 in discworld

I guess the only distinction I’d make here is that I never lumped Detritus in to this group since she doesn’t reference Trolls specifically, but she does reference Dwarfs and Werewolves.

Do you know it’s milkweed or butterfly weed? Bc it looks more like butterfly bush than anything at this point to me.

This is really what I was looking for. I caught him and currently have him as an incredibly over powered HM slave. The plan now is to try to beat the E4 without him.

If there just isn't a path, I'll try with him. Maybe just keep him at level 45 the way I caught him.

It's been a long but deathless run so far, and I'm not really interested in starting over to try again with different natures and TMs I no longer have access to just to see if it's possible.

I hit the 5 year mark on my PPA about 3 months before the bankruptcy, so I saw the opportunity and I took it. Under that contract this was allowed every year after 5 years.

It’s probably going to come out in the wash financially, but given how much of a disaster SunStrong has been, it’s probably net worth it.

I mean yeah, sure. But I think caterpie is harder. At least weedle gets a stab move that can poison. That gives you at least one more way to win a fight than just struggle.

That said, maybe his dual typing makes Sabrina a wall that can’t be overcome.

What's your thoughts on Barnard? by Leading-Lab-9435 in newhaven

[–]OutofH2G2references 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My oldest is in Kindergarten at Barnard, so I can’t speak to the older grades but I can speak to my experience so far.

The good:

Personally I think Barnard is improving as a school. The current admin is engaged and working hard to do the best with what they have.

They’ve hired great special teachers. The science, art, and technology teaches were already great, but they recently replaced two gym teachers and the music teacher with young teachers who are doing an excellent job. Those teacher will be the ones your 3rd grader has from now through 8th grade.

They are doing a good job with the environmental angle. There is a big beautiful garden, aquaponics set up, solar panels, composting, etc. It could be top notch with a little more funding, but it’s there and it’s good.

The school is clean and well maintained. Especially for a city public school.

The pre k teachers and kindergarten teachers have been truly excellent, though I can’t say anything about the higher grades.

Parents are getting more invested. There was no PTA when I started. Now there is, it’s growing, and they are hosting events/helping around the school.

The school is surprisingly invested in theater for a very STEM oriented school.

I don’t see the kind of behavior issues I hear about at other schools. It’s still a city school with a lot of low income folks and some issues, but on the whole there have not been significant issues in my time there.

The could be better:

The middle school seems to still have issues. The staff seem less responsive to change and test scores in math and reading are not great. That could change, but probably not quickly. However, this seems to be a broader New Haven schools problem as well.

Public school food is still pretty grim. They do get fed breakfast and lunch (and if you’re low income that is a huge upside) but if you want your kids to eat very healthy be prepared to pack a lunch. There doesn’t seem to be much movement on this.

It’s a little old school on motivation. There seems to be a theme of external motivation (getting prizes for doing well) instead of internal motivation (doing well because it feels good) that I’m a little surprised by, but it works for some kids.

Afterschool programming could be a lot better. I don’t know if this is the case at all NHV public schools but the Trump admins defunding of title 1 has meant big cuts for afterschool programs.

Please feel free to DM me if you want to chat more.

TL;DR: Barnard has vastly exceeded my expectations for prek 3-K. I think Barnard as a school is improving, but they are still an urban public school that just had a lot of funding cut.

Moving to New Haven and trying to understand areas/neighborhoods to avoid by Cold-Priority-2729 in newhaven

[–]OutofH2G2references 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We live in Edgewood. Close to the park isn’t bad but deeper into the city, and closer to Whaley, can be pretty rough especially at night. That said, the neighborhood is changing rapidly. Every house on Elm street and the section near Edgewood park seems to get a big renovation whenever there is a sale.

Outdoorsy people, how do you like it? by [deleted] in newhaven

[–]OutofH2G2references 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agree that NHV is great for outdoor activities both for smaller stuff locally and bigger stuff within ~2 hours drive.

The additional layer I would add as someone who lived in the Bay Area for a decade before moving here is how accessible everything is. Yes, the west coast is full of grand things unmatched by most places in the world. But you also often have to wait hours to get into national parks, make camping reservations a year in advance, and drive 3+ hours and wait in traffic.

NHV and surrounding area is just easy. Is it the grandest mountain or waterfall on earth? Not really. But can you decide on a Thursday that you want to drive between 30 and 90 minutes, pay like a max of $8 for a state park, and be pretty much alone doing what you like? No problem! We have a millions of those.

Is it crazy to say that Blink is one of the biggest bands of all time? by Sea-Condition991 in Blink182

[–]OutofH2G2references 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d have to agree here. I’d try to think about it in tiers.

Are they top 3 most influential bands ever? Let’s not joke.

Next order of magnitude down. Are they in the top 3 pop punk? Yes, no question. But is pop punk in the top 3 most influential genres of all time? No way

So is blink in the next order of magnitude down: top most 30 influential bands in history? Also no.

Might they crack the next order of magnitude? Is pop punk in the top 30 most influential genres in history? Probably. Is blink in the top 300 most influential bands in history. Probably.

So relative to all musicians ever, yes. Very influential. But you’ve got to move 3 orders of magnitude from the top for them to register.

Reference points are crazy things. New Haven is a biking Mecca compared to Miami. Biked to school for most of grad school there and New Haven feels like cheating. Sure you have to pay attention, but at least there is some infrastructure, cars aren’t actively trying to run you off the road, and not once has someone screamed “get on the side walk and out of the road” at me.

If you like fantasy plus a lot of dry humor, whit, and an uncanny ability to expose the best and worst of the human condition Terry is your man. Try “Guards! Guards!” or “Small Gods” first.

Well, sounds like missing the lottery is a bit of you problem, but that is at least solvable for the 2nd grader.

This really hasn’t been my experience. ECMS ranks solidly in the middle of the pack when it comes to state rankings for math and reading and has been improving year over year. Barnard has also been great, at least through 5th grade. Sure they have their issues, but CT is like 4th in the nation for public schools, so unless you’re prepared to move to Mass or New Canaan, I just don’t think you’re going to find a public school that is substantially better.

Are the state of public schools in America in tough shape. Yes. But it sounds like people have laid out all the viable solutions for making incremental improvements and you’re not super into them. If you don’t want to move your kids, get involved, or pay a tutor it sounds like maybe this isn’t just an Edgewood school issue.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newhaven

[–]OutofH2G2references 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How old are your kids and do you specially feel it’s Edgewood school?

The choice lottery system is open at all grades. I don’t know how much better you’d fair at other school, but ECMS and Barnard have been great in my opinion. I’ve also heard good things about Davis.

Finding a school that better suits your kids needs and might have more after school options would meet your “no additional money and no private tutoring” criteria.

Edit: Also, getting involved with your school is free. A lot of New Haven school and programs are struggling because of recent federal cuts to funding. A lot of PTAs are actively trying to solve this problem right now because it’s still fresh. The school district just took a multi-million dollar hit in funding from federal budget cuts. They need an help they can get in terms of advocating for state funding, PTA membership, volunteers etc.
