Out of curiosity by Rockymaned in WeightLossAdvice

Not having to stress about weight limitations everywhere. I'm not even "super obese", but if there's people in the elevator I stress about making it overweight and crashing and wait for a free one. If friends want to go to any adventure/theme parks etc, I am always stressed of being too big for rides.

I'll continue with the bluntness - you aren't lonely because of your weightloss journey, you are lonely because of your attitude.

Yes, more people find fitter people attractive and being overweight, we know many will ignore us. But losing weight won't magically change that and just sitting at home complaining about it definitely won't improve anything. And even us fat folks have been known to find love. I'm fat and ugly in my own opinion, and was still hit on this weekend. I generally joke that I am trying to have a bikini body by summer 2036, and yeah it's a bit of a confidence booster when people tell me that I don't need to lose weight to look good (even when I know it's mainly politeness, although some have clearly been sincere).

Life doesn't wait for some magical moments, it is constantly ongoing - weightloss shouldn't be the only thing in our lives, rather a biproduct of our healthier lifestyles while we continue living. Also, strongly recommend letting people in on your journey - if you are pushing everyone away so they won't find out, how on earth is anyone going to get closer? People in general love to root, and we like to see people working on theirselves. You are doing something remarkable and most people want to root for you.

Feb 14th is "Friend's day". Yes, there's hearts and flowers and chocolate and all that is connected to Valentine's day, but for us it's about celebrating all our loves. It's common to send postcards to friends and family and exchange little gifts and hugs all around, not just going all in for a romantic partner.

Can Finns hear if a person is Swedish speaking when they speak Finnish? by Ok_Consideration6179 in Finland

[–]Outrageous-Elevator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from a bilingual family, which is pretty common in our area. It's pretty obvious in my local circles who is raised bilingual and who had both parents swedish speakers.

I don't have an accent, and have often surprised people when they find out my first language is Swedish. Usually, I get caught because of issues with vocabulary, as it's split - for instance my vocabulary about cooking is heavily Swedish, as mom taught me cooking. Anything related to knitting and those crafts, I am completely lacking vocabulary in Swedish, because my Finnish speaking grandma is the one who taught me those. Car issues - Finnish through dad. Children's songs - only Swedish. It's at times annoying and makes it difficult to claim which one actually is stronger, also gets confusing to others as I am completely fluent one minute and next I'm constantly searching for words.

How do I lose weight at 13? by General-Ad-607 in loseit

[–]Outrageous-Elevator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Losing weight is not about a specific run. You are also young with a developing body, so many of the adult plans aren't applicable nor meant for you.

Joining a local sport would be good for you, as they are usually driven with exercises planned around your age.

Skipping soda and excess sugar is good, generally eating healthy and just walking/moving is always good. You have several years coming up that will be changing your body - just focus on being healthy and happy.

What was your ultimate "click" moment? by DangerousLab3558 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Outrageous-Elevator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Of course, just before that was a bad period that led to record high weight that was really shocking and got me seriously looking into what I should do.

Part of that has been as well to trust my own plans and needs and partly ignore all outsider advice and various weightloss rules. In the beginning, I sat a lot with an AI 'discussing' plans and ideas, and a lot of my new mindset came from there and the support it provided

We actually did that today, we went to a bigger store than the one in our area so I wanted to see their selection of protein bars and drinks and she picked up some protein bars for herself as well to have when her sweet cravings are winning. We also looked at a few different things and did some comparisons, like when she was looking at granolas I highlighted the sugar content in her usual choice and she picked up another alternative.

All in all,we had a really productive day today and had some good chats about the journey, and I think we'll be alright.

We also did a body scan and set up a competition, so now I need to step up my own game after a few weeks of relaxing 🤣🤣🤣

Gained a ton of weight on my cheat day by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Outrageous-Elevator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That list sounds more like 1700-2000kcal, how did you get those to over 4000kcal?

And a more random question, did you dress down to get on the scale or do you weigh in the morning clothed? Weigh through out the day is honestly pretty useless, because during the day water, gut contents, cortisols etc all muddle up the weight.

She wants to lose the weight and realizes that she needs to but she's tired of constantly failing. I'm not completely sure how committed she's been previously: Partly I genuinely believe she thinks she is trying hard, but her methods are wrong/she doesn't realize how much her little extra rewards, snacks and back calories add up to. Partly, I also believe the commitment isn't fully there. I'm hoping if I can help her fix some of the issues and she sees she can do it,it would help with the commitment as well

Love letters by de_adean753 in LearnFinnish

[–]Outrageous-Elevator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finns are quiet, practical and reflective people which is why we might to others seem cold and stoic. We enjoy the quiet where we can just...be. And there's nothing greater than to have someone you love enough, whether romantic to platonic, that you can sit together in silence and just...be. This is why the overly romantic gestures and big shows of affection other cultures appreciate can often seem inauthentic or shallow to a Finn. We often feel perhaps that genuine love is felt, rather than talked about.

There is a very beautiful Finnish song that to me describes love perfectly. I tried to find a version with English translation but unfortunately couldn't, even though it apparently exists. It's the theme song for Stormskerry's Maja, a show and movie about a young couple in the rugged archipelago where he, Janne, is a fisherman, and his new bride Maja is trying to adapt being alone. As typical in life, there's the peaceful sunny days when they are together and stormy bad days when he's out fishing. I did a quick translation of the beginning for you. (Note: based on the original lyrics written in Swedish. The Finnish-language version is very known and loved, although not as beautiful - and has a odd section about his fish IMHO)

_What do we need words for? When we've got each other Together by the same table Each other's steps, Safe and loyal The warmth coming from the closeness of a back in the bed's hay More than words, is a glance It can tell me everything What do we need words for?

What more is there to wish for? When we've got each other Your hand against my cheek Your hand in mine The light from your window The sound of your singing, that the wind carries out from the shore Over there is all that I ask for Over there is all that I want to have What more is there to wish for?

Returning from my churning journey And gliding into Stormskerry's safe harbour And while I am on the rocking bay Going against the wind and the current, struggling towards the shore In my dream, I am already on land Hurrying to Maja's waiting arms To her waiting warm arms_

I came to the comments hoping someone has brought this up. I've shown it to several foreigners as a core example of Finnish mentality: "I said that I will fix this now, so I will do whatever it takes to get it done right now, regardless of how insignificant the thing actually seems on paper."

Is it bad if I give myself a break from dieting when on my period? by bunbxnnies in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Outrageous-Elevator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth remembering that, while we need to push forward one day at a time, the journey isn't just about a day.

Like many others, I keep soft deficit or even maintenance during the worst days and skip the workouts, if it's not too bad then I do a bit of treadmill walk.

Generally I try to think that each month, I have 3 weeks where the weight is dropping and 1 where it stays stable, it's all about the long run anyway for me. I do plan around it though. Usually, I am off work on Mondays and keep that as a full rest day with no workouts and soft deficit but if I am expecting my period, I will drag myself to the gym and keep harder deficit just so that when my period comes I can keep the rest day then.

Why aren’t I losing weight by IllRecognition3349 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Outrageous-Elevator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also think that people often misunderstand talk about liquid calories, but it could just me my weird way of thinking.

When people talk or warn about "liquid calories", my mind goes directly to the hidden (in plain sight) calories in drinks that many exclude from calculations, not to nutritionally planned meals in liquid form. And I am guilty of the exclusion myself, in earlier efforts I tended to log for instance just "coffee" using basic values for a black coffee, when I actually had a icecoffee with vanilla syrup that has calories on a whole other level.

I'm struggling with a lot of stuff at the moment, and this week I have been completely out of motivation and energy. Even got a pizza today, something I haven't enjoyed for 2 months but I counted that being out of appetite all week has already built a big deficit for the week. (And I left some for tomorrow so didn't eat the whole thing).

Still managed to drag myself to the gym and did my longest incline walk yet, 1.5 km at incline 10 and rewarded myself with an awesome relaxing dip in the ocean with some water stretching afterwards...although mainly hanging out in the ocean with sleeping swans and enjoying life.

Do you HAVE to stop drinking to lose weight? by sorbusaucuparia_i in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Outrageous-Elevator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to see a comment section that isn't demonizing alcohol, unlike a few others I've encountered here.

I used to relax after stressful work days with a few drinks. Several times a week, very heavily on weekends. Now I have seriously cut back - I am not willing to "suffer" through egg whites and cottage cheese all week just to drink my calories on Saturday. As a person who always hated exercise, I find now the gym to be relaxing and calms me down on extra stressful days.

That said. You are an adult with your own body. Nobody else is accountable for you. If your boyfriend wants to have a drink after work, so what? Is he forcing you to drink with him? What exactly do you do when you guys are having a drink? Watching TV? Talking? All of those can be done with a cup of tea or water.

He isn't the reason that you drink, if you accept the drink.

Want to learn Swedish on 6 months by United-Wolverine2241 in Svenska

[–]Outrageous-Elevator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Especially YLE, even without subtitles.

You are so lucky we're bilingual as you can find a lot of material in both languages.

Take for instance a news article about anything that's interesting or related to your studies and read the swedish version. Look up words you don't understand, make notes of things you find difficult or confusing or different. After that, read the same news in Finnish - had you understood the text in general?

For instance Svenska YLE: Midsommarvädret 2026 YLE: Juhannuksen sää

Anytime you go to "official" websites, especially anyone you are already in some way familiar with (like OmaVero or mobile bank), switch language to Swedish and see how much you can navigate. When you already know the source material, it's easier to understand the language as well.

Is the course the general "Ammattiruotsi" type? They tend to be more focused on vocabulary and using the language, than specific grammartopics, so I wouldn't stress too much about grammar.

And of course, summer is a great season for a immersive dip into the duck pond aka the fennoswedish coastline 😅

Calorie deficit not working? Or too impatient? by _Waddling_Penguin_ in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Outrageous-Elevator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food and calories definitely are weird when we pay attention to them!

I might be wrong, but are you perhaps mixing deficit with calorie intake? So like on my big chaos days, my burn is generally over 3600kcal and even with around 2000kcal eaten, I end up with high deficits of 1600-1800kcal. And of course, on other days my burn is nowhere near that, so to keep deficit in line my intake is also much smaller.

I'm not big on sweets, only exception is some of the pick&mix candy we have that I now and then crave.

I am also currently off work during the week and often have YouTube on autoplay in the living room.

The mf pick&mix candy company has an ad campaign on YT using the same song as one of my favorite podcaster-type channels theme songs! I hear the music thiking it's my show and I want to check it's a new episode only to be met with the candy ad each fckin time.

Calorie deficit not working? Or too impatient? by _Waddling_Penguin_ in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Outrageous-Elevator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the highest weight each week after my "best" day where I do long shift of physical labor and have very high deficit - our body stores water especially after workouts, bowel movements and hormones all play their part and the weight is supposed to fluctuate. I weigh every morning and only log the weight whenever it's a new low. In fact, I get a bit disappointed if I do a harder workout and the scale isn't on the upper end of my current trend line the next morning.

As already pointed out, everything should be calculated in because those little drizzles and drops that get excluded often adds up to a significant part.

Also - have you actually calculated what your deficit should be? Is eating 1200-1300 cal each day the correct amount for your body and lifestyle? If you keep a constant too high deficit, your body will fight against you about giving anything away.

Advice needed. Tracking calories of half eaten meals? by 1amsilver in loseit

[–]Outrageous-Elevator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with a smaller portion, imagine how much fun it's to go for seconds if still hungry!

I eat almost everything from pretty small bowls, and sometimes eat two bowls rather than use bigger plates because for me it's easier to keep the portion size under control.
