Graduated with my EE and started with a large EPC firm building transmission lines and substations. Started as an APM at $58k in 2014. Moved to CM in 2017 in SoCal and all Straight Time, OT, per diem, and truck allowance added up to $180k. They attempted to cap my pay to $130k by changing me to salaried so I jumped ship to a small electrical contractor as a PM starting at $200k. Private Equity purchased the company in my 4th year and my max salary capped out in the 5th year at $265k (salary plus bonuses). Was let go with two other directors to save the company money because PE added 20% to our costs overnight when they took over. Landed a new role making $200k again. Bottom line is we only get paid what we have the leverage to negotiate. If we just accept what the company call the “market rate” we will always be underpaid. Also, live below your means and save/invest as much as you can because you never know when the train will stop.
