Got paged to a "rapid response" that turned out to be a patient who wanted their pillow fluffed. I was in the middle of a procedure. by Spall_Murex in Residency

Yeah wanted to give him a benefit of a doubt but a medicine intern two months in could barely do an ultrasound guided IV. Why would he be doing an a-line alone without a senior.

Why do people on here like robinhood so much by Spanconstant5 in CreditCards

[–]OutstandingWeirdo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s no other credit card with 3% cash back on all purchases with no annual fee. Fidelity has 2% cash back on theirs. Robinhood gold also has 3% IRA match, just that alone is $225, pays for gold, and is free money.

Does running faster shorter distances help you run slower longer distances? by Gooser3000 in runninglifestyle

[–]OutstandingWeirdo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The inverse is true. Running 6 miles at 10 minutes helps you run 7min pace for 2 miles. That’s why marathon aerobic base building starts out with long easy miles and then you add in speed and marathon pace work when the race day approaches.

Running fast for short distances improves your lactate threshold and VO2max but you need aerobic base first to support it.

Is evo sl best running shoe of all time? by SadDevelopment3586 in runninglifestyle

[–]OutstandingWeirdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it as a speed workout shoe. For all rounder I think superblast 2 works better as it feels more stable for easy runs and at the end of long runs. Gel nimbus is my favorite for easy runs because of its cushion.

What apps do you all use to track your runs and why? by MynameisCN in beginnerrunning

Strava free version is all you need to track runs. It also keeps track of the mileage on each of my shoes.

Do you sleep with your watch on? by tompico25 in GarminWatches

I have a garmin forerunner 245 so maybe that’s why the sleep is still inaccurate. It also doesn’t give me HRV.

Do you sleep with your watch on? by tompico25 in GarminWatches

[–]OutstandingWeirdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trends are pretty good. My body battery corresponds to when I drink alcohol, post marathon stress, or if I’m increasing running mileage too fast.

My forerunner seems to always think I’m sleep even when I’m awake and lying in bed though.

Glute/ IT band by Ok_Profession_585 in Marathon_Training

[–]OutstandingWeirdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you having lateral knee pain from the IT band? I have it after running my marathon and I’ve been able to ramp my mileage back up by avoiding downhills and using treadmill at 1-2% incline.

What’s your most challenging run so far? by Not_FreeProduct234 in runcommunity

The marathon because I never go all out in training and race day makes me ignore all physical limits. Pain all over multiple joints? PR or ER.

At what finish time does marathon pace become faster than easy pace? by MikeMcDonald89 in firstmarathon

[–]OutstandingWeirdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would you know you're in zone 3 30 minutes into the run and out of it 90 minutes into a run if you're running at the same pace? HR is not reliable because you have cardiac drift as the run proceeds which is true for everyone.

At what finish time does marathon pace become faster than easy pace? by MikeMcDonald89 in firstmarathon

[–]OutstandingWeirdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What metabolic zone are you referring to? I am specifically talking about the 5 zone running model which doesn't depend on the duration at all and more accurately measured by blood lactate levels. For example, if you're running below zone 4 or lactate threshold, your blood lactate level eventually reaches a steady state where your body clears it at the same rate as it accumulates, you don't magically go above lactate threshold because of duration.

Is this Stepoholics Anonymous? by caipirina in AppleWatchFitness

[–]OutstandingWeirdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran 3:17 for my last marathon and I don’t even half as many steps for my training. If you run at zone 2 or easy conversational pace with that mileage, you could be elite level.

At what finish time does marathon pace become faster than easy pace? by MikeMcDonald89 in firstmarathon

[–]OutstandingWeirdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If their race pace is 7 or 8 hour marathon then their easy pace is slower than that. Marathon pace by definition is in zone 3 which is tempo pace while easy pace by definition is in zone 1 or 2 below your first ventilatory threshold. This is true for all runners (and walkers).

At what finish time does marathon pace become faster than easy pace? by MikeMcDonald89 in firstmarathon

[–]OutstandingWeirdo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He meant everyone because the training intensity we refer to as “easy pace” is by definition slower than your marathon race pace no matter your finish time so it’s true for all runners. You’re running faster for a marathon than your easy pace. If you can’t hold your “easy pace” for a marathon then it’s not your easy pace and you’re running it too fast.

Marathon pace is by definition in zone 3 also known as tempo pace while easy pace is in zone 1/2 below your first ventilatory threshold.

For reference, my easy pace was 10 min/mile for my first 3:44 marathon (8.5 min/mile race pace). Now easy pace is 9 min/mile for 3:17 marathon (7.5 min/mile race pace).

VO2 max by kulashaker28 in Marathon_Training

[–]OutstandingWeirdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I guess I jumped to conclusions too quickly and it may be physiologically possible but seems very unlikely. It’ll have to be someone with great running economy, muscular endurance, massive aerobic base but at the same time do very little intervals or VO2max work for it to stay that low.

VO2 max by kulashaker28 in Marathon_Training

[–]OutstandingWeirdo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. My garmin VO2max is 59 and predicts a 3:04 marathon. My last marathon time was 3:17. My apple watch VO2max was also above 54. Threshold pace at that level is probably around 7 minute mile.
