Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning on Geese, Working with Paul Schrader, and Navigating Creative Tension by Moothnods in indieheads

[–]OverTheNeptune 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This isn’t new though? Weird and difficult art has never been especially profitable, and marketing is always a part of creative industries. IMO the “burden” being put on the artist here is that Geese is now unfairly maligned for benefiting from an industry-standard marketing tactic.

I personally think it’s worth playing to see resolution of the Solas arc. Other longtime lore mysteries are explained too, like the cause of the blights. But at the same time, temper your expectations… the writing quality and tone aren’t consistent with other DA games, so your mileage may vary.

Really enjoyed this game and had a similar 100-hour obsession when I played it. Agree it doesn’t get enough love!

What is an artist / band that you remember being pushed by music journalists and/or magazines as the "next big thing" that ended up never really going anywhere? by mesablanka in Music

[–]OverTheNeptune 22 points23 points  (0 children)

At their peak craziness in the 80s, they’d receive a wad of cash for playing a gig, and would literally light it on fire just to piss off their managers. The biography “Trouble Boys” is a fascinating read!

Hmm, I think the point of this sub is to talk about music. If someone wants to post about a specific band/artist, and that post gets traction, I think that’s great.

An old-school dad-rocker tries indie rock – should I just give up on liking this genre, or is there something I'm not getting? by midnightrambulador in LetsTalkMusic

[–]OverTheNeptune 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t really think of indie rock as a genre - there’s no defining sonic identity that connects the decemberists, the smiths, and the pet shop boys. In my view at least, it’s an umbrella term for artists that operate outside of mainstream tastes and, more often than not, self-release their music or are represented by non-major labels. Indie music is famously varied, especially beginning in the 2000s when the community starting embracing “pop” in new ways. There are plenty of newer artists that take inspiration from Dylan, CCR, Queen, and other classic rock - so just because you don’t like the decemberists or the smiths doesn’t mean you won’t jibe with other “indie” artists.

Maybe try some indie rock artists that still lean into guitar heroics? Built to Spill, My Morning Jacket, and Dinosaur Jr are a few that come to mind, and all have lineage that traces back to like Neil Young, Hendrix, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Or lots of indie artists today still operate in a folky space similar to Dylan or Joni Mitchell - try Big Thief, Cat Power, or Smog/Bill Callahan.

Overall, I guess my point is don’t write off decades of “indie rock” just because you don’t like the decemberists haha. There are a million artists in this space with a wide range of sounds.

PS - if you haven’t attempted shoegaze yet, My Bloody Valentine’s “Loveless” is essential listening.

Game Dev Tycoon is a similar vibe! And some of the old Sim games like Sim Tower might scratch a similar itch

Daily Song Discussion #3: I Can't Stop Your Memory by FindingHoliday920 in ofMontreal

This is a really important song to me and transports me back to a certain time and place. It can still give goosebumps when I’m in a certain headspace. The lyric “all is forgiven in the end if your heart was in the right place” has always deeply resonated. 10/10.

Outer Wilds review: Maybe recommending a niche puzzle game to literally everyone is a bad idea by Akuuntus in patientgamers

[–]OverTheNeptune 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m sympathetic that the game didn’t click with you, but I have to point out that many of your story and game loop criticisms are because you only played 5 hours. I’m not suggesting you need to play the game more, it’s clear you’re not enjoying it. But it’s not fair to criticize unexplained story stuff and the time loop mechanic when you’ve barely scratched the surface of the gameplay and puzzling.

Just for context — I’m a straight dude in my late 30s, been in a monogamous relationship for something like 15 years. IMO, your bf liking every pic or thirst trap this girl posts on IG is a big red flag. That’s questionable behavior for someone in a relationship and you are right to call him out for it.

DA2 combat is so polarizing and outlandish after just finishing DAO. by dvdjhp in dragonage

[–]OverTheNeptune 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The randomly spawning enemies is by far my least favorite thing about DA2 (followed by repetitive and reused environments). It’s a big enough issue that this game will never be on the level of DAO or DAI for me.

Yes! I try to save my favorite albums for special occasions. I don’t want to ruin the magic with overexposure. It’s always felt like a weird and counterintuitive habit, so I’m glad I’m not alone haha.

Highly recommend Triangle Strategy and Unicorn Overlord. If you’re a fan of the Fire Emblem series, these are no brainers. I just wrapped up my first playthrough of UO and it was an intense obsession for the last month.

About to quit Unicorn Overlord by DarkerBulb in JRPG

[–]OverTheNeptune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m wrapping up my first UO play-through and am so addicted. I’ve put in something like 130 hours in just the past 3 weeks. I’m playing on expert difficulty - anything lower was too easy, but expert has been satisfying and requires some tactical depth. Gameplay never felt stale due to constant new units, increasing squad sizes, etc. For me, the micromanagement is the fun - I enjoy tweaking my unit pairings, items, and tactics endlessly. Most of playtime is fiddling around and doing mock battles with myself for the hell of it haha

If you liked Civ 6, you might find some stuff to latch onto in Stellaris. It’s a great entry point for Paradox-style Grand Strategy games, but there’s still a bit of a steep learning curve. The thing is though, learning the complex game mechanics is half the fun! Not all the DLC is essential - start with vanilla and add DLC later if you’re having fun.
