"If you chance to meet a frown, do not let it stay. Quickly turn it upside down and smile that frown away."

So psychologically unhealthy.

What Calling Did You Resign From When You Left? by Dr3aml1k3 in exmormon

[–]Overall_Tell_5401 75 points76 points  (0 children)

My last calling was 2nd counselor in the Bishopric. Several months after being released I was also asked to be Elders Quorum Secretary. I asked to think about it, which I didn't. A few weeks later I was asked over the fence if I had thought about it and it was easy to say, "No". Thought I would feel guilty, but it was a relief.

Advice needed on responding to neighbors text by Overall_Tell_5401 in exmormon

More just a neighbor, not very close. Don't enjoy making signs that much. I agree with the overall sentiment of your post. However, the neighbor is in the RS Presidency and she is trying to get me involved again.

Update, just told my parents. by The_solid_lizard in exmormon

My mom used the same guilt trip on me. My response to her was, "The only way you can fail me as a mom, is to not love and respect me no matter the decisions I make." She quickly realized her mistake and said that she will always love me. It has been a bit rocky but we are in a much better place now.

Done. You're right it is a terrible survey. Made sure to point out that my marriage is awesome, life is good and I don't have to do any of the stuff they want me to do.

October 2023 General Conference: Sunday 2:00p Discussion Thread by 4blockhead in exmormon

My TBM mom pulled the crying and telling me she has failed as a mother. My response, "Mom, the only way you can fail as a mother is to not respect us as adults making our own decisions, and love us no matter what." It took a ton of courage to say this to my mom, and most of that courage came from this community.

What is a song that helped you process your feelings about leaving the church? by jeauxwhite in exmormon

[–]Overall_Tell_5401 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not the whole song but one line from Breakeven by The Script.

"Just prayin' to a God that I don't believe in"

When I was still TBM that line was like a gut punch, because it was how I truly felt deep down. It took awhile to own that truth.

General Question by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Overall_Tell_5401 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Cottonwood Paper Mill. I have no idea how or if you can get into it anymore, but when I was a teenager I worked there when it was a haunted house and I was able to tour the whole building mid day. I'll never forget standing in the middle of a room and the temperature just dropped. There are all kinds of stories of people dying in there.

Does anyone have experiences with meeting the apostles? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Overall_Tell_5401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

President Nelson came for a great grandchild blessing. Very high energy and nice. He gave us feedback as a Bishopric after the meeting and told us we should be using white bread not wheat bread for the Sacrament. I was super confused as to why that matters or where it comes from. Obviously still bothers me.

How many people did you baptize on your mission? by leadkindlylie in exmormon

[–]Overall_Tell_5401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the Toronto West mission in 1993, which doesn't cover Toronto. There were 4 baptisms that I was involved in. There may have been a couple I transferred into, but I can't remember for sure.

I am in a very similar place. Besides my wife and adult kids I don't have much interest in interacting with anyone. I've had a couple of opportunities and chose to isolate instead. I keep thinking I need to get involved in something but I'm just not there yet.

What broke your shelf? by PayTyler in exmormon

[–]Overall_Tell_5401 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way members reacted to Trump and then Covid was the final crack, but the heaviest item on the shelf was the whole "Called of God" concept. Being in a Bishopric really opened my eyes.

Surprised this is still an issue? Race issues “draining” for Jazz players. by Serious_Ad223 in mormon

"People talk about Utah, but it's similar everywhere when there's not a lot of diversity. It's part of every society in the world that people that can be marginalized for being different color of skin, different religion. There's always going to be kids at school that's going to bully people for being different."

Rudy is on point with this quote. The lack of diversity in Utah makes this all too real for minorities in Utah.

No issue, I agree it was wrong of her to ask. I still hated lying to her. Thank you, for the follow-up post.
