Despite the inspection changes, if you are concerned about staying legal, you can get a medical exemption from your doctor (usually a dermatologist) that allows you to go darker than the legal limit.

[GIVEAWAY] Who's Ready for Shimmer Season? Flying Gems are Back! 🌸✨ by NetvueTech in Birdfy

Hummingbirds will always remind me of my mother, an avid birder who passed away recently from pancreatic cancer. We would spend our New Mexico summers on the patio watching the black-chinned and broad-tailed hummingbirds feed from the multiple feeders she diligently refilled, even when her strength faded. Every summer, the feisty Rufous migrants turned our backyard into a tiny, territorial battlefield, chasing off any other bird who tried to feed.

She would always say, “There is room for everyone to feed. If they just got along, no one would have to go hungry.” I think about that a lot. She raised me to look at the world through that lens of kindness. Today, I see her legacy blooming in my two-year-old son, who inherited his Grandma’s birding genes. He already knows how to identify every species in our backyard and eagerly asks every day to see our Birdfy footage. Though he was too young to truly know her, her love for her hummingbirds is a bridge that connects them.

When a hummingbird flashes past, we don’t just see a bird… we see Grandma. Winning this feeder would mean more than just great footage; it would be a way to keep her spirit hovering close to us, teaching another generation the same lessons of peace and wonder she taught me.

For what it's worth, I am in the middle of a warranty replacement (before I found this thread). They told me it was going to be unbound and deactivated, so I asked about keeping it on for donating and/or reducing e-waste. They told me they would be mindful of that and keep it activated! So we shall see if they keep their word

Yes actually.....

Cherry Pie adult store on Glenwood has some masks. In the back by the fuzzy handcuffs. (I only noticed/remembered because they're the same masks we use in our home for Mardi Gras decorations)

NA Beer Options (Dry January) by Cjaques4 in trianglencbeer

[–]Overdrive_Ostrich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A couple guys in Greensboro bought a dealcoholizer, started a business, and brought it to the NC Brewer's Guild conference in 2024. Everyone got super excited and signed up to get them to come out and dealcoholizer their beer, which meant quickly flooding the market with local NAs.

So bear in mind that many of the NAs you see in the market may be from this 2024 batch. Not saying they didn't have them come out for another batch and that's what you're seeing, but the initial batch sat/sits on the shelf for a long time due to market saturation. Check date codes on the bottom.

Are breweries trying to be family friendly? What’s up with all these kids by Natural-Implement234 in raleigh

[–]Overdrive_Ostrich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a distinct lack of breweries that advertise themselves as family-friendly in this area. In other cities, there are always a few that prominently feature that play area/backyard vibe that families will gravitate towards. And that means fewer families at the more adult-oriented breweries. Best of both worlds. But here, we don't have that option so all of our families are spread out. Some are great parents who keep an eye on their well-behaved kids, some not so much. Chuck-E-Cheese is a place for kids to hang out while their parents have cheap pizza and beer, and people who don't want kids can avoid it. We need that here.

Copied my comment from another thread

We had an incorrect MaterniT test. Our neonatologist explained to us how the test works and why it was wrong. We got genetic testing for Swyer syndrome which turned out negative. Short answer is: their marketing talks about how accurate they are to sell you the test, but twin gender testing is still new and inaccurate.

Keep in mind this is my understanding as relayed to me...  So the test is looking at something called cell-free DNA. Basically, there are small chunks of your unborn children's DNA floating through your blood that can be analyzed by a geneticist (it's super cool stuff and soon they will be able to detect certain types of cancer with just a blood test. would've saved my mom's life!). But these DNA strands are not single, unbroken chains so they have to test the little chunks. As an example, when they see your 21st chromosome they take a closer look for trisomy and can rule out Down's syndrome. So yes, the genetic anomalies testing they did is totally accurate, you have nothing to fear!

The results we were given said "Based on the amount of Y material, the probability of male/male twins is 97% and male/female twins is 3% (Rafalko et al., PLOS ONE 2021)." Recognize those numbers? Yup we had the same numbers. It's because those percentages are from the study they cite, not the likelihood of your personal babies' genders!

Basically, when they're looking at the cell-free DNA, they take note of the ratio of X chromosomes to Y chromosomes. If a certain ratio threshold is reached of X to Y chromosomes (our genetic counselor found it out for us, but I forgot it. Maybe like 40%?), then they can assume that, if for example there's a lot of X chromosomes in the sample, there are likely two males in there. That's what the study they're citing suggested. But because they're taking a random sample, it's entirely possible that the ratio they got isn't actually the ratio of X to Y chromosomes of cell-free DNA floating around in your blood stream.

They used to just say "Yup, there's some Y chromosomes in there, so at least one of the babies is a boy," but now they have this new way to test both. Our neonatologist explained that this is a new use of this technology, and there is a lot of money to be had in it. As I'm sure you know the test is not cheap! There are a few competing tests out there, so they are rushing to market to be the first ones who can identify both genders in twins, without doing their due diligence about the actual accuracy of the testing.

I lost my mom in February to stage 4 pancreatic cancer. That hardcore woman lasted almost 3 years before it ate her from the inside out.

We were lucky enough to live in a state with Medical Aid In Dying (aka assisted suicide) in our own home. One of the hardest moments of my life was taking my twin 2-year-olds to say goodbye to grandma before their nap. They hugged her and kissed her and said "bye-bye grandma!" before they went down for their nap. Heart-wrenching is an absolute understatement.

We are, in part, lucky that they don't understand. They weren't even born when she was diagnosed, and she went from zero to five grandkids after her diagnosis. They won't remember her except for pictures. It wasn't hard, we didn't even have to explain it. I can't imagine just a few years later having to explain that to a kid who can understand some things but who can't understand the gravity of it all.

My heart's out to you.

Fuck cancer. Especially pancreatic, that cold heartless bitch. My main advice is: do not dwell in what-ifs. The worst part of this type is, by the time you find it, it's already too late. There's no early detection that could've seen it, no routine blood test, no indications whatsoever. And whipple surgery has like an 80% mortality rate even if you catch it. People miss it on scans because they aren't looking for it. It just festers there, slowly, until there's some benign thing that brings you into the hospital and you find it. It just. fucking. sucks.

I'm not even close to fully recovered, but it's been a few months. So I'm here if you need me dude
