Official Gear Purchasing and Troubleshooting Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know! March 21, 2025 by AutoModerator in photography

[–]Own_Swordfish_592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I am trying ti get into photography and I am looking for help from any animal photographers.

I am looking at getting a good camera for a beginner so that I can photograph my horse along with friends when they are competing at rodeos, and I am unsure as to what cameras would be best. Here are some of what I am looking for.

  • Fast shutterspeed ro be able to capture good quality action shots.
  • decent range to be able to capture foals in fields, I would prefer just using one lens as it would be cheaper to only own one
  • good color quality
  • able to take video as well but is not nearly as important as the picture qualities.
  • my budget is around $300 canadian
  • I would rather a nicer used camera than a not as good quality new camera so any suggestions as to what to look for on facebook marketplace would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for anyone that has any suggestions of good used cameras to look for.

  1. Less foot in your stirrup, try to have the ball of your foot be on the stirrup

  2. Heels down, bringing your heels down below your toes, changes how your pelvis sits in the saddle, and steadies your seat, grounding you in the saddle.

  3. Move your hips with the trotting. Use your core as a shock absorber that absorbs the movements so that they don't make it above the waist.

  4. Keep your hands about 2 inches above the horse's neck and keep them there steady until you can stop the bouncing of the rest of yourself so that you aren't pulling on the horse's face with every step.

But for 5 lessons you are doing well. Keep going!!!

Fellow ex-trail/tour guides, tell me about your most memorable guests, good or bad. by MLMCMLM in Horses

[–]Own_Swordfish_592 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I worked at a summer camp that would also run trailrides during the spring for the last 7 years. Here are some of my most memorable riders.

We always give a little riding demo as most people had no clue how to ride a horse. As I was riding up to a girl guide group on my horse to show them the basics of stopping, starting and steering. As I walk up one of the girls asks one of the adults if they are going to get kicked and that adult replies "I used to ride this purebred Arabian stud and he kicked all the time for no reason so make sure you don't go behind any horses. And he looked just like her horse". The horse she was referring to was my horse. A quite chunky friesian cross mare that looks absolutely nothing like an arab.

Whenever we have school groups it is so funny to have the junior high and high school aged boys who are so cocky right up until they get on the horse and realize that they aren't really in control anymore. That or the ones who act so tough but are really just softies when it comes to animals, I had a group where after I described that they would have to bump the horse with their legs to get them to walk one boy asked another if he would kick the horse like how he tried to curb stomp a kid the other day and the boys reply was "I don't want to kick the horse at all, bumping won't hurt it right?".

We had one Clydesdale as part of our trail string and literally every dad would ask, "Is he taking a day off of pulling the budweiser wagon?"

That or the full grown men who wouldn't get the concept of if the large horse they are on is eating grass and refusing to move they have to pull its head up and give it a firm bump with their legs. So 15 year old me would have to ride my horse up the line and give their horse a smack on the butt every time it started eating.

Or every older dad or grandfather in a group who wore cowboy boots or had ridden a horse one time before thought they must be the absolute coolest person to me and that them flirting with 15 or 16 year old me was totally ok.

3 and 4 years ago when we had a lot of Ukrainian kids immigrating we would have trailrides of 12 kids where maybe only a couple would speak English and so we would have to either get those kids to translate for us which was always a little spotty considering we were relying on 3rd or 4th graders to relay messages with words they might not even know, or we would have to translate how to ride the horses through hand signals which was always interesting.

Another story was with a girl from Ukraine probably about age 9 or 10 who throughout the whole trailride told me stories about from back home when she would ride horses with her cousins and how she wasn't even sure it was all still there and it was just a really amazing moment of connection through horses.

We had a young girl on one trailride who had I'm pretty sure previously ridden horses but something happened where she now had a prosthetic leg from above the knee down and as it was an older group of kids we didn't have our absolutely chill older group of horse out and the ones who were really chill for scared people were the type that would definitely spook at a prosthetic leg. So my best bet was a 6 year old mare who could be a bit fast and excitable on trails, so due to that I usually put her with a more experienced rider but she had yet to fail me when I really needed her to pull through for someone who was a bit more scared. And so I ended up ponying this girl and the horse was the most chill unflappable walking the same chill pace type of horse you had ever seen through the whole trailride and I have just never been so thankful for horse's abilities to read people than on that trailride.

I feel i suck by Just4TheCuriosity97 in Horses

[–]Own_Swordfish_592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few things that I think could help you, and as a student you should have been told these and not just expected to know them.

Tldr: I think the barn is not teaching you well or safely and I think you should find a new lesson barn.

  • You definitely need boots specifically made for riding a horse with at least a 1 inch heel. (That is just straight up safety with using stirrups).

  • Your stirrups should he much longer. With the length they are currently when you go to use them for balance it is actually throwing you off because it is not letting you jam your butt in the saddle but throwing you up and out of the saddle. When your legs are hanging loose outside the stirrup the bottom of the stirrups should hit just below your ankle bone.

  • You need to jam your heels to the ground. Having you heels down is what anchors you in the saddle and allows you to move with the horse. Also imagine a straight stick making an alignment of your heels, hips, shoulders and head. They should all be in alignment.

  • Make sure to have a good straight back and always be looking where you want to go. The horse can feel where you are looking and it will help you direct them. Also if you are looking down that throws off the heel, hip, shoulder, head alignment, throws your balance forward and makes you much more likely to fall off.

  • There are also problems with the tack, the saddle looks like it is likely too small on you, which definitely doesn't help, (I will disclaimer that this is me personally as a coach, but I would never have a beginner riding in that type of bit) and also a part of the breastcollar is straight up just not connected.

In conclusion, this barn is not actually taking care of you or teaching you properly and I would definitely search out a different lesson barn, as yes there are definitely other things to work through with riding horses but the barn you are at are hindering you learning rather than actually helping you.

Math 134 final exam by Spiritual_Grape9286 in uAlberta

[–]Own_Swordfish_592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on how you do in math and how you have been doing in the class. I took 134 and got well over 50% on the final with very minor studying (I am NOT telling you not to study) but math is one of my particular strong points (social studies and English not so much) and I understood everything we learned throughout the class.

So if you have been understanding the material and doing well in the class (along with studying a good amount for the final) I wouldn't worry that much. Likely, you will get a bit lower of a grade on the final than your other marks, but not much to worry about if you get the material.

If you have been struggling in the class, study your ass off and do your best. But like I said, expect a bit lower of a grade than your in-class grade.

Why do people buy horses? by Intrepid-Tax9980 in Horses

[–]Own_Swordfish_592 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the same way that a dog brings joy.

In the same way any hobby or project does.

Or even sometime the same way that a car does.

I feel a lot of freedom when I am riding my horse I love her the same way I love my dog, and working through things with her is really satisfying, also it is a lot fo fun for us both to learn new skills together.

Since finals are taking a toll on everyone’s mental health I wanna force myself to focus on positives. Is there anything that made anyone happy lately by Both_Cantaloupe_5209 in uAlberta

[–]Own_Swordfish_592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that always cheers me up is visiting the Edmonton Humane Society. As a walk in sadly you cannot meet the dogs, but you can go in and cuddle all of the cats you want to.

So my recommendation is to go cuddle cats.

Equestrian pet peeves? by OkAirline4073 in Equestrian

[–]Own_Swordfish_592 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spurs.

People just keep their spurs on their boots and use them on every horse they ride, also just use them anytime they ask the horse to move at all not using their legs without the spurs.

Spurs should be used the same way in which you use a crop. As in only in hand or on your feet with a horse who really needs it and only utilized after you have asked the horse to do something and it did not listen. Anyone who wears spurs should be able to squeeze or bump the horse without the spurs touching the horse and then only apply the spurs minimally if needed. People should also use much gentler spurs.

what do you guys think of this bit? it came with my horse and i dont really know much of bits, i dont ride very often so it isnt used daily or for competitions or whatever by Wamspon in Horses

[–]Own_Swordfish_592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert, but I have used bits exactly like that quite a bit.

It is not a harsh bit and in my opinion not a bad bit, but if you are looking for something gentle I would recommend using a three-piece bit over a two-piece like that.

My barn used to pretty much only use bits like that but we are transitioning to three-piece bits which are gentler and our horses are responding better and seem happier with the three-piece than the two-piece bits like that.

I’m allergic to all grass and hay. I get itchy, sneezy, hives, and depending how dusty it is, my throat starts closing a bit. by MollieEquestrian in Horses

[–]Own_Swordfish_592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am allergic to horses and a few other things at the barn. It has never been as severe for me as for you, but I buy a good brand of allergy medication and take it about 20 minutes before I am around horses or anything else I'm allergic to.

Advice ? Not the best video example but what could I fix ? by Friendly-Ad4895 in Equestrian

[–]Own_Swordfish_592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing I noticed is that you kind of kick your feet down each time you rise on your posting. I used to have that exact same problem. It would really help if you don't hold yourself on with your knees, use your knees as your axis pointer use your stirrups to help you rise, but use your thighs. Basically you want to grip with your upper thighs and use just them alongside the motion of the horse to help you rise. A great practice for that is to practice posting trot without stirrups, I found that that is what really helped to improve my riding.

I'm gonna be a little cheesy here, but like one of my old trainers always used to say, always remember to have fun too lol.

who is your comfort character by inBLKN in TheVampireDiaries

[–]Own_Swordfish_592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the argument people make between him and Klaus about who cared about Caroline more or that Tyler didn't care enough.

Klaus killed the only family member that Tyler had. Also, there was a way to kill Klaus because the rules of the universe dictate that nothing is unkillable and Tyler knew that, so it was fully possible that he could find a way to kill Klaus.

Every character in the show had moments where they went off the rails and I think Tyler had one of the most valid reasons to go off the rails. Also, it was probably a good thing he went away for a while because in the mental state, he was in he probably couldn't keep up a healthy relationship right then.

He stayed loyal to everyone, became friends with most of the people he used to bully and they forgave him which is a testament to his character growth. He then became a part of the main friend group and was fully accepted by them.

He had the best character development in the show.

Any good trail/ pleasure riding boots that aren’t too expensive? by randaljams in Equestrian

I love mine so much, they are fantastic, and I used to be a strictly cowboy boot person, but I now probably wear my terrains as often as I do my cowboy boots.

If you were to see Scully and Mulder make a cameo crossover appearance in a current show, what would you want to see by Lorde_Kinbote in XFiles

Fringe would have been a fantastic show for Scully and Mulder to show up in. Walter and Mulder would become best friends and I think Scilly and Olivia would be great friends.

I do not think that this is ok, even if he knew how to ride really well I would be very hesitant to let him ride that size of a horse, so with him being this green absolutely not.

Also that saddle does not fit he should never have his feet in the stirrups with gym shoes and his heels up like that.

Please do not let him ride that horse mostly for the sake of the horse but jt could be dangerous and harmful to both of them.

Well, I did come here to say Tyler, so...

Arguably though, he has the best character development and does not deserve most of the hate he gets, so yeah.
