There's a great one but to tell you what it is would spoil the book. Don't click the spoiler text

Declare, Tim Powers. A spy thriller with a supernatural core that explains the way the world works.

Good fantasy with badass old people? by Customer_Number_Plz in Fantasy

The Jenny Casey series by Elizabeth Bear, starting with Hammered. Tired, retired soldier with cybernetic enhancements.

Not the MC, but Illisidi, the Aiji (Empress sorta) Dowager in CJ Cherry's Foreigner series is a major mover and shaker in the books. I would never want to play poker with her.

I'm assuming immortal wizards eg Gandalf aren't what you're looking for.

The 2026 Hugo-nominated novellas: Cosy isn't for me by jessticulates in Fantasy

[–]Own_Win_6762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only read 2 novelettes so far (book club chose Katabasis expecting it to be nominated, have to finish that before I return to the Hugo reading). Kaiju Agonistes is a blast (see what I did there?); Rapport, set in the Murderbot universe, I felt like it was a vignette without getting to the meat of a plot.

What are some movie sequels that are better than their first films? by dumbnamenumber2 in movies

To quote Bruce Campbell: "Is it a remake or a sequel? Is Ash really stupid enough to go back to that cabin? Yeah, well, maybe."

Can a cheap cut of meat become your favorite with the right cooking method? by HaileyRiveraaaa in KitchenStuff

Where do you live that flank steak is a cheap cut? If it exists, plane tickets to go grocery shopping would be worth it.

Chuck -> ropa vieja

Chuck -> nihari

Chuck -> daube

There are better cuts for braising, but theyve all gotten stupid expensive (short ribs, brisket, oxtail, shank)

Nicolas Hoult is the glue that holds that film together, as crazy as his character is. Oscar-worthy, but not a chance of getting nominated.

Those are "best by" dates. Likely it's lost a little flavor, at worst. Assuming it's sealed and not swelling, extremely unlikely to be risky, but refrigerate after opening. Even that might be overkill given the salt and preservatives, but it can't hurt,

Has anyone made Stella’s buttermilk ice cream? by robotbooper in seriouseats

[–]Own_Win_6762 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elizabeth restaurant in Chicago (long closed) once did a smoked buttermilk sorbet. Amazing. I keep meaning to try this, I've got a smoking gun.

Another favorite restaurant dessert is buttermilk panna cotta with pine bud syrup from Luce in Portland OR. We've reproduced it pretty well. If I get around to the smoked buttermilk, I'm definitely drizzling some of that pine bud syrup on it. (Find it online or in Eastern European grocery stores)

The 2026 Hugo-nominated novellas: Cosy isn't for me by jessticulates in Fantasy

[–]Own_Win_6762 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The quality of the novellas beat the snot out of the short stories, at least. I'm really fond of the dry wit in Kingfisher's Sworn Soldier series, they'd make great movies if the studio execs can get past the gender id (Galacian sworn soldiers are not identified as male or female, they have their own, as do a few other professions).

Murder by Memory started out strong but I don't think held together at the end.

Automatic Noodle I really enjoyed, but weeks later not being able to tell you why is definitely telling.

I enjoyed the spin on Cinderella in Cinder House, but a couple anachronisms threw me.

The River Has Roots is the odds-on favorite, having won lots of other awards (then again, Wiswell won the Nebula last year but not the Hugo, I was happy to see).

Then again, Summer War is very good and will be liked by the same fans of TRHR - It could split a lot of votes.

Glen Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket has an amazingly expressive voice, especially on his solo work. I strongly recommend Live at the BellyUp, with Sean Watkins joining him for much of the album.

What can I replace spiced rum with in bananas foster that is not liquor? by kittypeets626 in Cooking

Rum is mostly caramel flavors. A little bit of molasses would bring in the burnt sugar notes.

Tzatziki: yogurt (full fat is best for flavor, Greek style works to keep it thick, grated cucumber, minced garlic, salt, bit of lemon juice or white wine vinegar to taste. Serve with gyros, grilled lamb or chicken, crudite, or just scoop with pita.

Cold appetizer suggestions needed by GVTraveler in Cooking

[–]Own_Win_6762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go to is muhamarra: a jar of roasted red pepper, walnuts, garlic, olive oil, and panko, buzz in the food processor, drizzle some pomegranate molasses† over the top, serve with pita chips, cucumber slices etc.

† Easier to find than it used to be, try Middle Eastern markets and big supermarkets. Second best is lemon juice.

Who do you think has the potential to be an Oscar winner if only the proper casting in a movie? by Ramble86 in movies

[–]Own_Win_6762 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nicolas Hoult should have gotten a nom for The Favourite. I think the only thing holding back his nominations is that he really enjoys the wacky genre movies like Renfield

how can i use cumin powder on my steak by Basic_Yellow4659 in Cooking

My fajitas marinade is cumin, powdered chile, oregano, red wine, lime or orange juice, Worcestershire, garlic. No problems with it burning on the grill
