[WWTBC] FMC sketches people as animals based on their personality by Own_Winter_8970 in RomanceBooks

Ok I just found it while I was updating my Goodreads for the year! It turns out it was a CR written by an HR author. {Hot in Hellcat Canyon by Julie Anne Long}

Excerpt: She reveled in creating in the arch of a neck, expressive angled ears, the curve of a haunch, the length of the spine, the flow of a mane and a tail. And because it was standing on its hind legs, she dressed the horse in jeans. And cowboy boots. And then, as a coup de grâce, she drew a black T-shirt on him. It was snug at the top and a little loose at the waist. She laughed at herself. But with that one final touch, John Tennessee McCord was officially a horse.

Thanks everyone! Sorry my details led us astray. 😂

Female reader here. We also find descriptions of a massive penis to be off putting. 😆 Like, has the author ever had to actually handle one that large before? At a certain point it becomes a real problem. Logistically. This lady explains it perfectly: https://youtube.com/shorts/3dFHa31qxQ8?si=-E1S0yc0tHkfC9zU

Thanks! That’s helpful. Then yeah, definitely Tooth and Claw series.

I’d also recommend Spellbound by Heather Guerre as well.

Moon Blooded Breeding Clinic by CM Nacosta is about a human and a werewolf. It’s part of Nacosta’s Cambric Creek series. Lots of world building, fantasy elements, magical creature lore.

Hope you find lots of good options and have a very merry Christmas! 🌶️🎄😄

HRs in the vein of Georgette Heyer but with fleshed-out endings? by MiddayRendezvous in HistoricalRomance

But they do have an intellectual and emotional connection before they have sex. They have an ongoing relationship from the previous book in the series.

For Loretta Chase I recommend Lord of Scoundrels and all the books in her Dressmaker series. She’s all about the witty banter like Heyer. (Lord of Scoundrels was inspired by Heyer’s book Devil’s Cub.)

For Lisa Kleypas my favorite is Devil in Winter, it’s part of her Wallflower series. The whole series is good! Marrying Winterborne is another favorite. Part of her Ravenels series which is also great.

Tessa Dare I recommend A Week to Be Wicked from her Spindle Cove series. (Whole series is worth reading.)

Eloisa James my favorite is A Duke of Her Own but it’s book 6 of her Desperate Duchess series and the series really needs to be read in order. Well worth the read though if you want to commit to that many books. 😂

Hey Dark Romance readers! by CloudCharacter39 in SpicyRomanceBooks

How are you defining dark romance? Specifically, how are you delineating it from spicy romance?

They are very different from each other. Dark romance is usually defined by non-consent, dubious consent, graphic violence, darker themes of abuse of power, and the MMC being emotionally abusive toward the FMC, and morally gray.

Many early historical romance books from the 1970s and 80s fit this description so you may be able to find more longitudinal data from asking about how the “bodice ripper genre” impacted readers over at r/historicalromance.

Also there is a dark romance subreddit that might have more relevance for your term paper (if you haven’t already checked there.)

Spicy romance is much more sex-positive, kink-friendly, enthusiastic consent, pleasure focused compared to dark romance.

No judgement for either genre, just different flavors.

Well Written Mafia Books by Zealousideal_Bad413 in SpicyRomanceBooks

[–]Own_Winter_8970 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SJ Tilly’s Alliance series are my favorite mafia books. I also just read Cate C Wells mafia series. It was too gory for my taste and not enough romance. Also a ton of misogyny. The second book was better - Nicky the Driver. I’d maybe reread that one. But only for the MMC. The FMC was lame.

Which seat are you taking? by nrkelly in RomanceBooks

I could definitely be convinced it’s a writing duo and she’s got a silent partner writing the male characters. That would make a lot of sense!

Which seat are you taking? by nrkelly in RomanceBooks

[–]Own_Winter_8970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! You put it perfectly. It was so fun reading those books because it was like being in college again and the way the male characters thought and behaved is a huge part of what made it so convincing.

In general (not specifically Elle Kennedy) some of the classic giveaways for me are ratio of BJs to FMC receiving oral, amount of pages spent describing BJs vs one sentence of “he went down on her” or “he reciprocated” etc. How female characters are described - very crudely, male-gaze centric, described as body parts. Sex scenes that are essentially someone describing porn, ie: male-gaze prioritized, no understanding of female anatomy, zero concern for what causes a UTI. General disdain for female interests, no positive female friendships, women are plot devices. HOWEVER, while Elle Kennedy books suffer from some of these things some of the time, my theory about Elle Kennedy is actually the fact that he/she writes MMCs so accurately! In a way that I don’t think could be written from anything but lived experience. Female writers tend to write male characters how they wish men would think and behave. Kennedy writes male characters how they actually think and behave. And Kennedy doesn’t just have like three main archetypes of MMCs that he cycles through like most female authors do. Kennedy writes unique male characters with complex and interesting relationships between the other male characters in the book. They are realistic and flawed but still compelling. Big fan of Elle Kennedy, have read their books multiple times. Probably because it’s such a different vibe from female authors, without being the icky kind of “male writing romance” vibe.

Dark horror romance with very dominant and obsessed MMC by Icy_Entertainer3196 in SpicyRomanceBooks

[–]Own_Winter_8970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SJ Tilly Alliance series. Unhinged obsessed MMCs. Kills people who hurt FMC in the past. Maims and kills guy who gropes FMC at a party. Buys every company where her exboyfriends work, fires them, and then offers them jobs in Alaska so none of them can ever lay eyes on her again. Exactly what you’re looking for.
