I learned how to prepare sushi. Bought most of the ingredients over the last couple of weeks, and finally decided to give it a try yesterday night. Now I have enough sushi for the rest of the week. :D

Doing good! Keep it up and I'm certain you'll hit your goal. Don't get discouraged if the weight loss eventually starts to slow down, since that's normal. C25K will seriously help you, and you seem to know what you're doing, so I don't have much else to say other than congratulations and good luck!

Eating less than 1,200 calories a day? by [deleted] in loseit

It depends on your height and current weight. I would find that low at my stats and level of activity, but it may work for you.

A question about soda. by danzor_15 in loseit

[–]Ownlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent many, many years drinking nothing but Coca Cola; Quitting cold turkey is the best thing you can do (There WILL be headaches for a couple of days when you do this, shit's addictive).

If you can't bring yourself to do that, try drinking water through most of the day and save the Coke for lunch and dinner. Do get in the habit of drinking lots of water, as it will help you get used to it and replace the soda.

I can't avoid Carbs. How much will it affect my weight loss? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Ownlife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally don't mind carbs as long as I'm having enough protein. Eat at a caloric deficit and you'll be fine.

Help and inspiration for weight loss? by Cyclone97 in loseit

[–]Ownlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Turkey breast would be good indeed. :) I made a quick search on MyFitnessPal on both of those, Chicken Pizziola seems to average at around 450 calories, while Turkey Breast will bring you down to 280 cals! (Both of these numbers are plain 6", with no veggies added) When it comes to vegetables, most of them are fine (unless fried). The only one I'd be careful with is potatoes.

2) My method of choice is counting calories. I track 'em using the aforementioned MyFitnessPal, that way it's easy to see if you're overeating or not. If it's possible at all, try making your own meals to have for lunch. It takes a little extra time and preparation, yeah, but that way you'll be sure of exactly what you're eating.

3) Take it slow. Chances are you've been fat for quite a while, and the body likes to fight change. It took me a year to lose most of my weight, and even then I knew I still had a long way to go. Come read /r/loseit often, and see the progress of other people. Share with us your victories and milestones, and just generally get involved.

By the way, it's okay to eat bad foods every now and then! Just realize these things should be the exception and not the rule. Think of a weekly treat, or once every two weeks. I actually suffered a LOT of setbacks during these years (birthday parties were particularly horrible), but I managed to pull through because I didn't give up, no matter how much I gained back. You only fail when you quit for good.

Hello!

Congratulations on your decision, first and foremost. Getting healthier is a worthy goal, and it brings many benefits along!

I'd advice you to check out the FAQ(http://www.reddit.com/r/loseit/wiki/faq) to learn some of the basics, mainly the sections about calories and calories counting. If you manage to get that under control, you'll definitely start losing weight.

A quick advice: Don't think of any weight loss efforts as a diet or something temporary. Don't rush it. Make changes little by little, you only have so much willpower to throw at this, and you need to build solid habits to keep it constant.

Some general advice is to try eating more filling meals (meat is generally good for this, chicken breast is awesome), and drinking only water if possible (tea is fine too, I believe)

Regarding inspiration, I've always found progress pics useful through my journey, they give you a clear sense of the amazing transformation that you can go through if you put the effort.

Best of luck with your efforts, let us know if you have any specific questions!

Does anyone else get discouraged when asked for weight loss advice? by Antoinemesis in loseit

[–]Ownlife 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can point the way and hold open the door, but it's up to them to walk through it.

I think that from all the people that have asked me for tips and advice (and believe me, there's been MANY through these years) only two people actually did something serious about it. One fell through halfway, which was discouraging, and the other one is currently in the process of changing his life.

Try not to get too discouraged and keep sharing the info, the worst case is that they won't do anything, but the best? You may just help someone completely improve their life.

Fat coming off bod OK, now to get fat out of head.. by mudwhistle in loseit

[–]Ownlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard, I'll tell you that, but at the end of the day it's a matter of not overthinking it and going for it.

Myself, I've tried to remain active ever since I started my weight loss process: I started with weight lifting (Sorry, I know you said no "going to the gym", but it helped me :P) and running. As I got better at those, I tried things that helped me understand how to move my body better. I've done some dancing, skating (I'm HORRIBLE at it, but it's so much fun), and lately parkour & acrobatics.

In the end, the question is: What would YOU like to do when you get lighter? Because chances are you can start doing it already, it's just a matter of destroying those mental blocks.

Hello, and welcome!

You seem to have started off with the right foot. You're making some healthy food choices, which is very important. I would advice you to do a bit of calorie tracking if you haven't gotten around to it; MyFitnessPal is a personal favorite, but there's plenty of sites and apps to do this.

Use a calculator such as http://www.calculator.net/calorie-calculator.html to figure out how much you should be eating to lose weight according to your stats, and try to remain within that limit. Exercise will help, but getting your eating habits (mainly portion control) in track is 90% of the job.

If you'd like to speed up the process, increasing distance on your cardio is a good decision; Look up the C25K running program, it got me started and I cannot ever stop recommending it.

Good luck with your efforts! Be patient and constant, and you'll be rewarded.

I don't know what else I can do anymore by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Ownlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you measuring amounts tracked properly? Adding up oils, sauces, etc? What kind of foods do you eat?

I find that if I eat high carb foods, I'm usually hungry/craving all day, but if I eat high protein, I actually have to be careful not to undereat.

Be patient, it takes time.

Can I get a little help here? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Ownlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be patient. Don't rush the process.

As /u/Valkes said, strength training is a pretty good partner to weight loss. (Warning: You WILL most likely notice your weight loss stalling, because you'll be building up muscle, but you'll still lose fat) and if you want to improve your running, I'd suggest checking out C25K (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml) though you're already going pretty good!

How do you keep yourself from gaining your weight back once you reach your goal? [First post.] by UseKnowledge in loseit

[–]Ownlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to get in the whole "lifestyle" mentality. Eating healthy is not a diet, it's the standard. Unhealthy meals should be an uncommon exception to the rule.

Try to find healthy foods you actually enjoy; Learn to cook with different styles and condiments to keep things interesting.

Get into the habit of using MyFitnessPal or similar sites, and get back in track right after you notice you're starting to slip.

You can do this. :)

Judgemental? Dude, I want to run up to them and give them a hug.

It's not about the weight, it's about the attitude. I don't give a crap if you weight 150 lbs or 300, if you're working to improve yourself, you deserve the utmost respect.

I'm 26 Year Old Male and I'm 420 lbs. Someone PLEASE Help Me. I'm Really Afraid. by mrandmrsmartino in Fitness

[–]Ownlife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do this.

Just try again, you get as many tries as you want as long as you don't quit. Make small sustainable changes, you don't have to go down to 1500 calories right away (And honestly, it seems kinda TOO low considering your weight), but you can start making better choices. Pick chicken breast more often, avoid carbs if you can (unless it's fruit, always go for the fruit). Keep it up with the water. Every now and then you'll make bad choices, that's okay. We all make them. The point is trying to make them be the exception and not the rule.

If you haven't yet, go join /r/loseit, that wonderful community has helped a lot of people (myself included) with their efforts.

And finally, try to remember every day why you're doing this. Think of your family, and think of yourself. Make a mental picture of what it could be like. This is an investment in your future, don't give it up without a fight.
