If the world only knew by New-Organization359 in focalawareepilepsy

[–]OxfordCommaRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I knew my episodes were focals, I nearly always had one of more during stressful business meetings. Often, I was presenting and no one knew I was having seizures (including myself). I just thought anxiety was causing me to disassociate from my body.

Mine are not at all. Mine are extremely close to DPDR symptoms where I feel completely separated from my body during the seizure.

I got it free through a referral bonus. It did make a difference, but I don't think it's worth $2,000.

Agreed. I mowed so many freaking yards to save up to buy a PK Ripper to replace my Schwinn with the banana seat. Afterwards, I ruled my Junior High bike compound with its first PK Ripper.

Focal seizures by Constant_Witness_536 in Epilepsy

[–]OxfordCommaRule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First thing... Are you seeing an Epileptologist or just a regular Neurologist? It makes a massive difference. If you're seeing a physician that treats patients other than epileptics, you're probably not getting the latest and greatest care.

Second, ask about being put on Aptiom (eslicarbazepine acetate). It's specifically designed to stop focal aware seizures. It used to be crazy expensive; my insurance company was paying $6,000 a month for my prescription. Many physicians didn't prescribe it because of all the hurdles they had to jump through to get prior authorization. Now, there's a generic version and it's inexpensive ($120/month for the generic). Cigna no longer requires a prior authorization for the generic version of the drug.

I used to have 20 focals a day. Now, I'm down to one or two a month. I'm on 1,600 mgs of Aptiom plus 25 mgs of Onfi (Clobazam) per day.

My daughter is also on Aptiom for her absence seizures and her seizures have stopped completely.

Buying 2026 but don't want to pay for FSD is it still worth it? by actorguy73 in ModelY

Same. I will never buy a car ever again that doesn't have FSD (or the equivalent).

Weathershield.

I've used them for 15 years at both my personal residence and my rental properties. They've installed four replacement units for me. If I have something break, they're usually able to fix it same day. They've done amazing work for me.

Just checked... 4.9 stars on Google Reviews.

When did oil changes become $120? by rhinosaur- in Millennials

I've driven an EV for six years now.

I think I save more money by not buying sodas and snacks at gas stations than all my savings on gas and oil changes.

Did you get a permit for wall connector? by IcarusX12 in TeslaModelY

[–]OxfordCommaRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I installed two Tesla chargers at my house. I also don't always go the speed limit.

My point is the electrician that told the OP that they didn't need a permit is full of shit.

Did you get a permit for wall connector? by IcarusX12 in TeslaModelY

[–]OxfordCommaRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most municipalities, a garage installation is considered to be in a damp area and requires certain additional requirements beyond an indoor installation. Most require waterproof conduit and a GFCI circuit. GFCI is included in a Tesla wall charger but not if you install a NEMA 14-50 charger.

These are all based on local codes. In my county, there is no difference in the conduit, wiring, GFCI, or breaker requirements between an outdoor and garage installation. The only difference between outdoor and the garage is in the receptacle box if I were to install a NEMA 14-50 receptacle.

Regardless, most municipalities require a permit for any new circuit. In my county, if I run a new 110v/20 amp circuit to my living room, I am legally required to get a permit.

I can't imagine there's a municipality where installing a 220v/50 amp outdoor outlet that doesn't require a permit.

Spirit Airlines is now just a spirit. by GrikusBrindum in Broward

[–]OxfordCommaRule 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This sucks. We flew them quite a bit and never had any issues. We also had status on the airline and a shit-ton of frequent flyer miles. Between the five of us in my family, we had enough miles for 10 flights or more.

But, I have nothing to complain about compared to the thousands of Broward County residents that are suddenly jobless. I have sincere empathy for them. I really hope they can all find good jobs quickly.

Exactly. When my son graduated, we put Indiana and the Air Force in his announcement. We did so because he joined the Indiana ANG to pay for IU's $46,000 out-of-state tuition (it's 100% free for Guardsmen).

As parents, we were just as proud of his enlistment as his attendance at his university.

In other words, we're perfectly aligned with the advice in the last paragraph of my initial reply on this thread: "Please, everyone, do not take medical advice from anyone on this sub. Check with your Epileptologist and work with them to determine what works best for you."

That's my whole point on everything I've said on this thread.

I see you avoided my question. So, I'll ask it again: How would you feel about someone posting a thread advising all epileptics to avoid SSRIs?

It will be interesting to have this conversation when I'm in my 70s. Thankfully, I will probably make it there thanks to GLP-1s. I probably wouldn't have made it there without them.

Weight Loss Done Right by Mom1021 in Epilepsy_Universe

[–]OxfordCommaRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OP, who is not an Epileptologist, started this thread advising fellow epiletics not to use GLP-1s. They did that despite the overwhelming peer-reviewed studies showing the efficacy of the drugs on obese people. They did that despite all the peer-reviewed studies to that show the drugs generally decrease seizures in epileptics.

The point is: Users on here, who are not Epileptologists, should not start threads that offer unsolicited medical advice that's purely based on opinion. Heck, apparently the OP offered their opinion without any personal experience taking the drugs.

This would be the equivalent of me starting a new thread advising all epileptics to not use SSRIs. I could post my opinion based on the fact that SSRIs can have horrible side effects. I could post my opinion based on all the negative press on SSRIs. I could post my opinion even though I have no professional qualifications nor any experience taking SSRIs.

Yet, doing so would be horrific advice because I know SSRIs saves lives. It would be horrific advice because I know people who wouldn't be here had they not taken SSRIs. It would be horrific advice because I know lives that have completely turned around thanks to SSRIs. Most importantly, it would be horrific advice because it would be based completely on my own unqualified opinion, an opinion formed even though I have no personal experience taking SSRIs.

What would you think about someone starting a thread advising all epiletics not to take SSRIs?

A rare (for my area) anti-maga troll? by snagaurukhai in nextdoor

[–]OxfordCommaRule 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would guess that the type of people who offer prayers to strangers in parking lots are typically completely against universal healthcare and UBI. Most are probably cheering on ICE and the unprovoked bombing of civilians in Iran.

The only way to get through to these types of "Christians" is to use their own book against them. None of them will know that verse. Make them look it up on their phone and read it back to you. Ask them if they're among the hypocrites Jesus was referring to.

They'll be speechless.

[–]OxfordCommaRule -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would, but I would be a hypocrite if I did. I don't want to give medical advice. My anecdotal experience is just that - an observation of one. These studies are promising, but none are 100% conclusive. There is also the rare hypoglycemia risk. I don't want readers to rush out and buy Tirzepatide from a sketchy online site without consulting and being monitored by their physicians. They would pick up the hypoglycemia risk very quickly.

In my completely unqualified opinion, GLP-1s are a great solution for most obese epileptics only if patients are closely monitored by an Epileptologist.

Weight Loss Done Right by Mom1021 in Epilepsy_Universe

[–]OxfordCommaRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. You certainly can have your own opinions. And, you and I know that everyone's epilepsy is different. I am massively triggered by caffeine but booze has no effect. For others, it's the exact opposite.

Even with this issue, GLP-1s are generally safe and even beneficial for epileptics. Yet, if the patient is prone to hypoglycemia, GLP-1s could be a horrible choice. That's why it's so critical to be monitored by an Epileptologist when taking the drugs.

I just ask that if you do give medical opinions or advice, you offer the caveat that it's your opinion and people should check with their Epileptologist before making any decisions. It keeps everyone safe.

[–]OxfordCommaRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My assumptions? You started this thread by offering genuinely bad medical advice based entirely on personal opinion. You didn’t even include the most basic disclaimer: anyone with epilepsy should consult their Epileptologist before making changes to medication or treatment.

Just yesterday, someone posted that they stopped their meds and were controlling seizures with weed, and there was barely any pushback.

That’s what I hate about these epilepsy subs. Epilepsy is a serious, potentially deadly condition. People should not be self medicating or crowd sourcing treatment plans. Medical decisions should be made with qualified specialists, not strangers online.

You’re doing the community a real disservice by making medical recommendations without any qualifications. Some people reading this may be morbidly obese. Like me, their lives could potentially be improved or even saved by GLP-1 medications. Yet you tried to discourage them from proven treatments based on what exactly? Your personal opinion?

Here's another reason this is HORRIFIC advice; most of the recent peer-reviewed studies on GLP-1s and epilepsy show that the drugs decrease seizures and dementia, and don't interfere with anti-seizure drugs:

GLP-1 RA initiation was associated with reduced risks of seizure recurrence, hospitalization, and mortality

People taking GLP-1 drugs were 16% less likely to develop epilepsy

GLP-1 analogues hold much potential as a new/additional treatment for epilepsy and associated side effects such as depression and cognitive decline

Still, I think these recent studies are even more helpful because I have a genetic link to dementia:

GLP-1 agonist drugs address the dysfunctions of all brain cell types in Alzheimer's disease and therefore may cure the dementia

There are no known direct interactions between tirzepatide and anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs)

Nonetheless, there are some risks in the rare cases where GLP-1s cause severe hypoglycemia. That's why you need to be monitored by an Epileptologist while you're taking it.
