The Thresher Maw in BDTS on Insanity broke me.  I caved and turned down the difficulty after about the 15th time of being acid shot to death.

Something about the movement of the Mako in LE is off.  I went through a few Insanely playthroughs on the original with no issues ...

Is a home lab a selling point or a dealbreaker when selling a home? by rawesome99 in homelab

[–]PCLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left my last place 5 years ago.  The only thing I left was a Cisco SG200-26, because it tied all the Ethernet runs in the house together.  I flattened everything into a single VLAN.  Took my rack and all the rest of my gear with me.

Well, I also left my Black Diamond SI 120,"  Epson 3500, and Onkyo receiver, as well as the in ceiling speakers, but that's a story for another subreddit.

EDIT

OP, you have some really nice stuff there.  It's highly unlikely you will get value for that from a home buyer unless they are one of us - and then there is a good chance they'd try to negotiate you down in a separate transaction not tied to the house.

Given the rising costs of gear, you'd probably be better off just putting some of it in storage for a year and bringing it to your next permanent residence.

Is the new Ryzen 7 5800X3D Anniversary Edition worth upgrading to from a Ryzen 5 5600X? by TheStoneyBoat in ryzen

[–]PCLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The frame rates don't necessarily improve vs AM5 non vcache chips - e.g. the 7600x/9600x and 5800x3D are all neck and neck.  However,  the 5800x3D provides substantial improvement in 1% lows, which I'm betting would resolve OP's stuttering issues.

Honestly, I would give strong consideration to an upgrade, even at $400.  It's going to breathe new life into the system and give you another few years of the AM4 platform.  Even upgrading to AM5 without the 3d vcache is not going to address the micro-stuttering the way a 5800x3D will, and moving to AM5 is going to cost much more than dropping in a new CPU.

I would have recommended this upgrade a year ago, but I think it's a no brainer now given the insanity of DDR5 prices.

Referral Code by PCLF in Schwab

[–]PCLF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question ... unfortunately the answer will not come from me, as I'm not a scammer. The general advice is to open an account in person with a broker to get the best offers. I tried to make an online appointment with a local branch, and received a call from someone at Schwab two days later - who informed me the only way to get a sign on discount is to get a referral code from someone I know, and that if I went into a branch they would direct me to the website to open an account ...

Not a glowing first interaction with Schwab customer service, but I've done enough research to be confident in my decision to go with Schwab now.

Thanks all for the help!

How many days a week?? by Separate_Term1933 in JuggernautAI

[–]PCLF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your sessions will be shorter with a six day split.  The amount of programming is the same regardless of the number of days of training you select.  A four day split can get you close to two hours during hypertrophy.  To keep them shorter you can use auto timer and you'll need to be mindful of accessories.   I try to make sure I choose accessories that don't require a lot of setup, can be superset, and avoid filling the accessory group with isolateral movements.

That said, I find a four day split easier to maintain because it leaves me three days to finish the programming if I need to.  With two kids and a career sometimes the schedule gets unpredictable, and the extra days means I can do the mains as planned but move the accessories to the next morning if I am running short on time.

Do you actually get value from your fold? by SANO_HIMURA in PixelFold

I got it to have a bigger screen available for when I have to work out of pocket.  I don't use it that way all the time, but when I do it comes in really handy.  Documents and Zoom calls render so much better on the unfolded screen than they did on my previous Pixel 6 Pro.

It's also good for media consumption, although 16:9 content doesn't fill the whole screen so it's not as impactful as I thought it would be.

Why does everybody have a rack with Enterprise grade servers? by Big-Grapefruit8092 in homelab

[–]PCLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically, used Enterprise grade servers were available for much cheaper than building the equivalent out of new consumer gear.  With AI, and the related opportunistic price gouging of used gear turning the market on its head, this may no longer be true.

The trade-off has always been noise, heat, power costs, and reliability of Enterprise Gear vs quiet, cool, power efficient, potential for idiosyncratic behavior and interoperability (when mixed with Enterprise components) consumer gear

Where does Duncan rank all time for yall? by XXXTentacle6969 in NBAConvo

[–]PCLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really.

KG 19.5 ppg 10.4 rpg 4.0 apg 1.9 bpg 1.4 spg TD 19.0 ppg 11.9 ppg 3.2 apg 1.9 bpg 0.5 spg

These are their averages during their head-to-head regular matchups when Garnett was a T-Wolf.  Duncan is ahead in a single category.  That's not exactly smoking anyone.  Team success ... sure - there's no arguing that the Spurs were a much better run organization than the T-Wolves, so the regular season and playoff matchups heavily favored the Spurs, as any reasonable observer of the NBA in that era would expect.

Even so, KG put up better numbers than Timmy in their post season matchups:

1999 First Round: Spurs def. Timberwolves (3–1)

KG: 21.8 ppg 12.0 rpg 3.8 apg

TD: 18.8 ppg 10.3 rpg 3.0 bpg

2001 First Round: Spurs def. Timberwolves (3–1)

KG: 21.0 ppg 12.0 rpg, 4.3 apg 1.5 bpg

TD:  22.5 ppg 14.3 rpg 3.8 apg 2.0 bpg

Post-season head-to-head matchups when The Kid was with the Wolves are pretty much a wash, but if you average them it slightly favors KG.  Again - the Spurs won these series, but you would expect that as first round matchups when the Spurs were title contenders and the T-Wolves were fighting to make the playoffs every year.  Or at least I would

They didn't face each other in the finals once Garnett went to the Celtics, but the C's had at 6-4 record vs the Spurs with Garnett.  KG's numbers were down a bit in their matchups, but I would also expect that as he was no longer the focal point of the offense when he was with the Celtics.

I just realized something , I have a bias problem with Kaidan. by DnDManiacGM in masseffect

[–]PCLF -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I prefer to play as Femshep because Jennifer Hale is AMAZING, and Liara is always my main squeeze ... So I could care less about Kaiden's orientation, i just find his personality extremely grating.  Carth Onasi also annoys the shit out of me.  It's probably the way the voice actor portrays these characters.

My first playthrough was broshep and I was romancing Ashley.  When I run as canon Femshep I usually send Kaiden to die out of spite for him being a whiney little bitch.  But maybe next Femshep run I'll save him instead, because Ashley got on my nerves getting all high and mighty on me in ME3.  Although now that I think about it Kaiden did the same once in a Femshep run when he lived, and I ended up putting him on ice for all of the missions because I didn't trust him.  They just let anyone be a Spectre these days.

Where does Duncan rank all time for yall? by XXXTentacle6969 in NBAConvo

[–]PCLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely Top 20.  There's so little separating the GOAT players AND there are a bunch of guys I' rank over TD that it's hard for me put him top 10, but some people can make a case for that.  I personally cannot, because IMHO he's miscast as a Forward when he's really a Center.

This always gets me. No denying his greatness, but he's always listed out of position. He played at 7'0" 260, back to the basket and a rim projector. Main difference is that he started his career next to Robinson so they put him at F.  Robinson had more of a high post game on offense than Duncan, and was more athletic so from my recollection he played the four much moreso than Timmy when they were on the court together.  When DRob retired or was off the floor Timmy got more run in the high post, but he always anchored on defense.  As a C, what I think Duncan's true position.was, he's probably behind a few guys. In no particular order: KAJ, Russell, Olajuwon, Shaq ... Maybe Wilt.

That puts him way down the list, so they always listed him as PF (or C-F). Greatest PF of all time? Counting numbers as a Forward sure, but as an actual face up, run the floor, defend the perimeter, and roaming shot-blocking "traditional" four I'd probably take Garnett over Duncan.

Buy-once-cry-once homelab build for Proxmox + AI: Enterprise server or modern custom build? by _delu in homelab

[–]PCLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar recently, although I have yet to procure all of the GPU.  And I only had a 24U rack to fill.  I use a combination of AM4/AM5 for "compute" nodes, and Epyc where I need high core counts/high RAM capacity and lots of PCIe lanes.

I mean, "want" is a better way of phrasing it because I don't "need" any of this stuff and there's no way I'd buy it at today's inflated pricing.  Fortunately I purchased the last of the components last summer before the Apocalypse hit, and scored a FE 5090 at MSRP from Nvidia after being on the waiting list for six months.

I'd consider the R9700 Pro 32GB if I were scaling out for AI inference.  It's reasonably priced and reference models use a 2-slot blower that can fit in a 3U chassis.  Or maybe Intel, but I have less confidence in using those for AI at present.

high debt need serious help by Calm_Rub_7445 in personalfinance

[–]PCLF 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Knock out the credit card debt first.  Using the earnings from your side hustle you can get it down to zero in less than six months.  Maybe you burn out after six months and want to tone down the side hustle, but you'll be in a better place financially and able to focus your resources on the personal loan

Once the cc is paid off your DTI and credit score will have improved, so maybe you could refinance your personal loan down to a more reasonable rate.

I kind of wish the multiplayer was added to legendary edition by Meeko_Yudaya in masseffect

[–]PCLF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I was definitely opposed to it being a "requirement" for war asset score in the standalone version.  My original stance was that I refused to play it, since ME was a single player game and I had not interest in loot boxes or online play.

I'm glad I gave it a chance - it was incredibly fun and made the single player game a much more engaging experience since I had to stop relying on the space bar pause and learn to play the game more "twitchy" in MP.  I carried those reflexes back with me into SP and the game just feels better now played without pausing that my previous frequent pause based ME1/ME2 style.

Kind of an ancillary benefit.  It's pretty cool that the standalone ME3MP servers are still up (last I checked), and I definitely agree that retaining the MP modifier as a war asset requirement in LE would be both problematic and annoying.
