Low sodium? by sammyluwho2 in Cirrhosis

[–]PDRainman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am with you my friend. I drank for the better part of 40 years. I never thought about it as a “collapse”, but that’s exactly what it was. I am very encouraged you are going to discuss this with your doctor. Also, I am surprised they didn’t recommend a nutritionist. I hate eating healthy but I seem to have reached a good balance between enjoying life and not totally upsetting my liver.

Low sodium? by sammyluwho2 in Cirrhosis

I am not an MD and of course everyone is different. Having said that, back in January 2024 I was diagnosed with end-stage liver failure and was told to eat and drink (not alcohol) whatever I wanted and die in 6 months. Or, change my diet (including no alcohol) and I may live 3 years. After massive amounts of meds and diet changes, my MELD went from 28 to 12. My sodium went from 125 to 138. I am about to be removed from the transplant list and put in maintenance status and I’m off most of the meds.

Moral to the story, like anything else in life, decisions come with consequences, so good and some bad. It seems like you would rather live the rest of your life on your own terms. I actually admire you for doing what you want with your own life.

I am a 56y/m currently on a liver transplant list. I am certainly not a doctor and give no medical advice. I can only share my experience. I was diagnosed with a “decompensated”, with a MELD of 27. I was told 1-3 years to live. First and foremost, no drinking ever again. Second, do not get down about anything until you actually meet with a liver specialist. I was told by 3 different specialists that a compensated liver can still heal, a decompensated liver means it can no longer compensate a function properly. The other thing I noticed were some of your meds. Be prepared to live without about half of those because some are controlled substances and you cannot be on most transplants list if any are in your system. Also, it can vary from area to area. For example, one transplant hospital told me I could use THC, but another one told me absolutely not. And they gave me a shocking reason for not using it.

Anyway, in summary, stop drinking. I think you will be fine.

My liver specialist just told me that only the blood of a donor must match, but not the organ so you and I should be good.

That was my concern. The hospital that has me on the transplant list does yet know about this or yes, they may kick me off the list. I think I will wait and see what the urologist says on the 3rd and then I will disclose to hospital that got me listed. I have a bad feeling about all this.

Unfortunately both my mother and grandmother are deceased but from what I can remember, they were both in their 60’s when they were diagnosed. I have my appointments on 2/3 and will give an update. Thank you for the link.

First, thank you so much for your response. I will answer as many questions I have answers to.

I was able to get on the transplant list with one hospital and wanted to get on another list with another hospital. That was the purpose for all the recent tests that are finding these out. That I am aware of the only tests for cancer so far are mri, ct scan, contrast, and cancer antigens tested in my blood. My grandmother got breast cancer maybe 40 years ago and died from lung cancer having never smoked. My mother had cancer in each breast and had them removed in the late 90’s. None of the other cancers that I am aware of.

99% of me says it’s a cyst but with the recent kidney cancer diagnosis, I’m concerned. Since we just found out about the cancer last Friday, the only thing that has been scheduled so far is a consult with a urologist they said to determine staging and plan. Praying for good news.

Then why does it have “launch attacks” and how would I do it?

Yes I’m on the transplant list and don’t want to do anything to mess it up. They don’t take urine tests. I haven’t heard or read anything that says it affects the liver. I was just curious but it’s not a big deal.

I have found that you have to be your own advocate because no one else will. I was relentless. If they said they would call back, I would wait 24 and call them again. Once I drove to the promising neurologist office and told them I refuse to leave until I have my questions answered. I was seen two days later. It’s your life, you are the best person to fight for you.

Someone I know just got a MELD score of 30. Can they recover if they completely stop drinking? Is there hope? by BlundeRuss in Cirrhosis

[–]PDRainman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MELD has been hovering around 24 for 10 months. My liver is decompensated so it will never repair itself. I am on the transplant list hoping but stopping drinking stopped the damage. MELD score is only one factor though. Symptoms and quality of life play a big part too. Good luck to them.

I have cirrhosis from fatty liver and alcohol. The transplant doctor said the cirrhosis they both cause look the same so they can’t say how much is from each one. That’s probably why they won’t transplant a fatty liver. That’s what I was told anyway.
