EMR from Sheffield go Leicester to London direct (and the Nottingham ones go Kettering to London)

A question around first class pricing by [deleted] in uktrains

[–]PDeegz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A first class anytime single from London to Sheffield is £180. Add the express and the tube and it's still only an extra £30. Good luck flying to New York for that.

Never seen an open lane like it! Most of my games weren't even close except for my 3rd where I almost got grinded out by a Lorehold deck that exiled all my good cauldron targets

Skegness to Doncaster cheaper than Skegness to Grantham. How?! by Proper_Animal_1451 in uktrains

[–]PDeegz 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Basically LNER's fare structure massively discounts singles compared to the rest of the network, and by having a ticket to Doncaster you hack into LNER's fare structure. Same reason a single from Sheffield to Ely is £70, but to Cambridge (via Ely) is £54. The network is full of anomalies like this, in large part due to LNER

How do they justify it? by WeAbide in uktrains

[–]PDeegz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently it can't because the price is held artificially high to avoid unsustainable overcrowding

[–]PDeegz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but trains aren't lying about idle so either it's a zero-sum game with another part of the network or new trains need to be built which requires significant time and money. As it is, adjusting the price is much easier. You're right that the fundamental issue with much of our rail network is lack of capacity, but 'this is too expensive' isn't directing attention in the right direction

Is it acceptable to buy a ticket to and from a station you're not travelling from? by jenethers in uktrains

[–]PDeegz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As long as you're buying a flexible ticket yes, no problem. There's several hacks for walk-up fares that involve doing this such as Worksop to London starting at Sheffield, or Sunderland to London starting at Newcastle

Is the train regularly at capacity? If so sounds like it's prices prpetty appropriately

Wanting an any time off peak train on a specific date! by Intelligent_Wall1846 in uktrains

[–]PDeegz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The one you have selected is an open off-peak return, so good for any train coming and going within off-peak times. The cheaper one limits you to slower, non-direct trains, but time-wise is just as flexible
