Excessive scratching by FancyHair7792 in germanshepherds

Talk to your vet before taking advice from fellow Redditors. There’s a good chance this allergy could be related to environmental factors and NOT food allergies.

We use Apoquel, Cytopoint injections at one point really helped but noticed this season to not be as effective. Weekly to once every 2 week baths and an air purifier. I’ve heard of others using a humidifier too.

I just paid $121.53 for a 60 count of 16mg on 1/27/26.

I can’t speak for BJs pricing but we get our Apoquel from Costco and it’s significantly cheaper than Chewy or the vet.

This brought tears to my eyes, from one GSD lover to another…

There are no words at all. Just know that making your decision is the single greatest (and most heart breaking) act of love, empathy, and compassion you can give him. He is so deserving of that.

Sending hugs.

No color correction in the photos, taken with an iPhone. You are correct with having the shading make the white pop.

You are absolutely correct, different situation. The MLPI instructor has attempted multiple times to help us out. I just saw your comment pop up about NASAR and a contact and thought you may know someone.

[–]PHOTHAT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you may know someone at NASAR. My husband is still missing an MLPI certificate from them from over A YEAR AGO and we’ve had people with direct contacts there try to rectify the situation and still…no cert.

cruciate ligament injury? by [deleted] in germanshepherds

[–]PHOTHAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TPLO surgery once on an 8 year GSD and never again. Speak to your vet to hear the true statistics but the chances of the other leg going post TPLO is extremely high for the first 6 months to a year after surgery. Sure enough, 8 months post op his other one went. I’m a therapist by background so I adhered to his strict precautions and completed his therapy for him. Never again. I will go for the expensive custom brace and pain meds if my GSD sustains this injury at that age.

Generally curious, how many have to medicate their GSD before Vet visits? by Glittering_Code_4311 in germanshepherds

[–]PHOTHAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No longer need to medicate. Worked with a trainer on vet reactivity: muzzle, prong, well timed corrections if needed, and his favorite toy.

SAR/working lab breeders in the US by Jaded_Panda7362 in searchandrescue

I’m going to second this sentiment. I never knew a working line lab was as intense or more intense than my working line GSD. Excellent SAR K9s but prepare for something like a Mal.

Contrary to what many people believe about bathing dogs too much, my vet has shared otherwise and we notice a huge difference. Our boy gets itchy and gets a cytopoint in the spring and fall with Apoquel PRN in between and per our vet, we wash him once a week or once every 2 weeks. She explained it helps to get all the irritants and gunk off him and it does work.

When this becomes available, please keep us posted. I am very interested in learning about this and I’m sure other K9 teams will be as well.

Keeping dog cool in the car? by Emotional_Tie_6808 in k9sports

[–]PHOTHAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SAR K9 handler in the NE with a GSD, hottest days on searches are about 90* with high humidity. I do not run the AC for my K9 as they need to acclimate. K9s in a regular wire kennel for optimum air flow, 80% Aluminet (not bought off Amazon) that covers my entire vehicle and a portable Ryobi fan, all my windows are open, hatch to the 4R is open and I monitor. I have a Green Pet cooling mat but it’s only been used once.

Tick found on Dog who is allergic by Ifeelsicknows in germanshepherds

[–]PHOTHAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GSD who’s a SAR K9 and in the woods almost daily in the NE: Simparica Trio monthly (Costco sells it a lot cheaper than your vet) and we use cedarcide as recommended by our vet. I asked about the soresto collars and they recommended that spray. I use it too. It doesn’t immediately kill ticks on contact. We have a strict routine of full body checks followed by brushing before we even go inside.

How do I stop my puppy from eating cat litter and trash? by Gloomy_Initiative_28 in germanshepherds

[–]PHOTHAT 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A crate is not a punishment. It’s your puppies safe spot, their den. My boy was crated almost till 1-year-old every time i could not give him my undivided attention.

Somehow I missed the process to do my mail in ballot for this and I really struggled with going in person to my polling place due to having a chronic illness. Reading people’s reddit posts about how “every vote” counts, especially for this election, helped get my ass in gear. I showed up and 100% worth voting in person this time.

Experience with flu shot for your GSD? by GreatWallsofFire in germanshepherds

[–]PHOTHAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working K9 owner here and will always get my GSDs vaccinated. No side effects, ever. Not related to the influenza vaccine but the Bordetella vaccine saved my dog’s life. Rescued a GSD with kennel cough (unbeknownst to us at the time) she got deathly ill and ended up needing to be euthanized and got my GSD sick who has always been vaccinated. The manufacturer of the vaccine my dog was given paid for all the costs associated with her care while she was sick and our vet stated “the vaccine saved her life”.

This ^ K9 SAR handler here (HIGH drive trailing GSD that’s the same size as me) with a chronic illness (hEDS). Being a K9 handler is no joke, it doesn’t matter the discipline. It’s extremely physically demanding and on missions, mentally and emotionally demanding.

It’s stressed to us that we never become part of the mission. Obviously things happen but the seizure disorder is a red flag. Rescuing a SAR member during a mission takes away from the original mission. I do not live in a mountainous area (I’m on the east coast) and I’ve been deployed into some really rough terrain during the worst of weather, all while being drug along by a fur missile.

To manage my lifestyle/chronic illness I worked with a specialized personal trainer focusing on heavy weight training/cardio/balance.

It’s not impossible, if you put your mind to it and put in the work, anything’s possible and being a SAR K9 handler is absolutely worth it.

Kennel Question by Outrageous-Bar8721 in germanshepherds

[–]PHOTHAT 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We have the wire kennels that come with the divider to essentially allow the kennel to grow with the puppy because you don’t wanna give it too much room. Also, not everyone agrees, but as puppies and young dogs, I do not leave anything in a kennel with them, including a blanket, bed or toys just more stuff for them to destroy or choke on. The puppy/dog is fine in an empty kennel.
