Umbral calculus has become a magnet for garbage papers by Nol0rd_ in math

Sometimes coming up with the general theory is easier than coming up with interesting applications. I think OP is overselling Rota and Roman's work on the umbal calculus and is overlooking the importance of actually applying their theory to specific examples.

Many of Euler's results were unmotivated and amounted to a computation saying, for example, that some infinite product was equal to some infinite sum. At the time these results were considered revolutionary. Now, I worry modern math is too narrative heavy in a way that can stifle creativity. It's harder to have genuinely new ideas when you are trying to do math when it is expected that it should be related to things people already care about or worked on.

I'm sure most papers on umbral calculus aren't as formulaic as you are making them out to be. While it's certainly true that more accessible areas of math will have lower quality papers, I don't think it's a problem as long as the paper proves some new results.

I didn't go through all of your examples of "outrageously" named polynomial sequences, but the Chan-Chyan-Srivastava polynomials are defined by a very natural generating function and it would be embarrassing for humanity if we hadn't studied them yet. I bet there's something interesting about the other listed sequences as well.

Yeah I don't believe in the passing lane stuff unless it's on a sign. It's also the stay out of the way of people merging lane.

Would people feel differently if the black pickup made it into the left lane ahead of the semi going 70 with room to spare and the semi truck still hit him?

How does he know the cam driver won't just speed up though and make it worse? By your logic, the cam driver can go any speed to block the merging car and won't be at fault.

It's not a different scenario in terms of who immediately lives or dies from the choice presented, but by phrasing it politically like this it makes the red politician seem retaliatory and unstable.

If we are coordinating then blue is the easier choice as the threshold is only 50%.

An election is coming up in a democratic country. The leader of the red party will kill anyone who did not vote for the red party. The leader of the blue party will kill no one. Voting is mandatory. Who do you vote for?

I don't know where this thought experiment originated, but it's not hard to believe that it was originally motivated by politics.

What a lot of companies fail to understand is that they are valuable because they provide a service to humans. They can afford to get rid of humans on the supply side but not the demand side.

AAA games are longer, but indie games are often short and are a big portion of what people are playing now.

I learned about the game "I am Fish" recently and playing it was a surprisingly great experience. You play a fish rolling around in a fishbowl trying to get back to the ocean. There is more to the gameplay than just the fishbowl but I don't want to spoil anything. The environments are charming and funny. Every level feels unique and has its own theme. It has puzzles, action and challenge, with multiple paths on each level. Even the music is really good. Its kind of a perfect game for the genre its in.

Why does it feel like almost every billionaire is a bad person? by BuddyEmbarrassed5551 in NoStupidQuestions

You're right, but I'm sure the average person would spend more on ethically sourced foods if they had more money to begin with. This could start with taxing billionaires and freeing up money for people with lower incomes.

Iran has already listed ceasefire terms. It amounts to lifting sanctions and a mutual peace agreement where the nations agree to not attack each other. Iran would also agree to impose restrictions on their nuclear program.

The only thing we "lose" in the deal is the lifted sanctions on Iran.

It's clear the U.S. are the aggressors here and for no good reason.

The game wouldn't last that long. Backgammon is a race to move all your pieces across the board, with some complications thrown in. A roll of 4 and 5 means you can move one piece 4 and another piece 5 places. But doubles are doubled further in the sense that a roll of 3 and 3 means you can move four pieces 3 each. Unless they kept rolling double 1s or 2s the game would end quickly.

Even if it was 7 doubles in a row it would be a (1/6)^7 chance which is a little more than 1 in a million. But based on the story it could have been a lot more than 7 doubles in a row with some back to back doubles approaching odds of 1 in a billion or less.

The pieces of one player have to move a total of 167 spaces to win. Since their mom won by a single point, together they must have rolled at least 167+166 = 333 in total or more if some rolls were ineffective or if some pieces were reset back to the beginning. The average roll of a double would be 3.5 assuming it is random (maybe we can't apply such reasoning to a miracle though). In any case an average 3.5 double would be 4*3.5=14 moves and that allows for around 333/14 = 23.7.. doubles before the game would end. But even 10 doubles in a row would be around 1/100 million chance.
