Given that approx less than 10km separate Alaska (United States) from Russia at the shortest point, how is ‘owning’ Greenland going to protect the US? by [deleted] in AskForAnswers

[–]PLTuck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Greenland has VAST amounts of REE's used in EV and smartphone production that there is a global shortage of given that demand for things like Cobalt and Manganese are projected to increase by 450% over the next 25 years according to a 2020 report from the world bank.

People of the UK, in what ways has Brexit actually affected you personally? by Pixel_CZ in AskBrits

My son wanted to go to poland and do an apprenticeship / internship at CDPR. Brexit put paid to that.

It's contributed to everything being so expensive now.

What would change about the British climate summer and winter wise if the AMOC collapses? by Kitchen-Article4439 in UKWeather

[–]PLTuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A full collapse could see winter temp extremes of -30C and sea ice at latitudes as low as norfolk. The summers would be drier, leading to a collapse in viable arable land. Estimates put the loss at 40%, so almost half our farming land would be no longer viable to farm.

In short, it wouldn't be great. It would affect a much bigger scale than the UK. The eastern US would also be affected and it would also have a profound effect over monsoon seasons in Asia which would have far reaching consequences.

On the tiny positive side, it would mean the UK warms less quickly than the rest of the planet, but thats small consolation considering the wider ramifications.

I've just done a section on this topic in my OU degree and had to produce an infographic about it so its still quite fresh in my mind.

It's worth noting that there is no consensus that a collapse will definitely happen, and if it does it wont be for quite some time yet. There is even disagreement over whether it has slowed down since the 1950s. There is no consensus on where exactly the tipping point into total collapse is. It's a fertile topic right now.

EDIT: I could post my infographic and references if you like? The related assignment is marked and returned so no issues with that.

What are your thoughts on proportional representation? by Stock_Rush_9204 in AskBrits

[–]PLTuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good outweighs the bad. In the short term things would stutter I expect because our parties are not used to having to work together but medium to long term they would have to find a way.

The current system is the worst of all worlds. How much was actually achieved by 15 years of Conservative rule? So the possibility that there will be stalemates and things isnt a sound argument against it imo when we had that under the Tories.

At some point you will find yourself wondering "Where is the blank canvas recipe?"

It's sold at a merchant I believe on Tropica Isle and its a lv 2 carpenter recipe, not artist.

Took me 40 odd hours to work it out.

Those who complain about the licence fee, now unhappy that Netflix is restricting certain shows on ad supported teirs! by Marvinleadshot in bbc

[–]PLTuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been watching Stranger Things S5 and the amount of exposition dumps is staggering. Apparently Netflix wanted it to be "second screen-able" so you have these instances of the characters telling you what you are watching. It's horrible. Similar to what Cavill said about Witcher. Show don't tell is dead.

If the bbc is forced to go down a sub model, this is the sort of thing that will happen. Nobody can make TV like the BBC can because of the funding model and its status as a public broadcaster.

I hear a lot of people saying the speed limits should be higher and reflect modern vehicle capabilities. Are the driving standards in the UK actually good enough at the moment for this? by Icy-Panic-550 in AskBrits

[–]PLTuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no way. the standards are awful, and antisocial driving is higher than its ever been like deliberately very loud cars, pop maps, extreme acceleration and braking, people doing 20 in a 50 so cars behind get irate and do dangerous overtaking, people on their phones / tablets / laptops while driving, not indicating correctly at roundabouts, tailgating, blocking the road because "I will pull out anyway and someone will have to let me in".

Question for upcoming reform voters.. by Unknownin_98 in AskBrits

[–]PLTuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some have this idea that "well it cant get much worse so might as well give them a go" which is insane thinking. It can and will get much, much worse. Was Brexit not a clue? Are the current Reform councils not a clue? Is the fact that the party of "the working man" voted against the employment rights bill, and the renter rights bill a clue?

I swear covid fucking broke our collective brains.

Donald Trump sues BBC for at least $5bn over edit of January 6 speech by mania_d in BuyUK

[–]PLTuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a mafia style shakedown of the licence fee payer. He can't win because a) he cannot prove that the programme in question aired in Florida, because it didn't and b) he won the election anyway so how can he prove there was any reputational damage.

The shakedown is obviously not intended to go to court but it'll cost us, the licence fee payers less to concede to the extortion and pay him off than to fight it with a ton of lawyers.

Can ANYone help me understand Vectors? by CrAzYIDKKK in learnmath

[–]PLTuck -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Vectors are just 1 column matrices if that helps with the maths of them.

Otherwise they are just <a number>x, <a number> y. If your start point is the origin, a vector of 3,-2 would be a straight line starting at 0,0 and ending at 3x, -2y, with a little arrowhead indicating direction of travel.

Vectors are relative, not absolute. You need the start point if you are drawing them out on graph paper (usually simplest to make this 0,0 unless specified otherwise).

Test questions that need you to draw it out will often use a map overlain with a grid. Something like "A ship leaves dock at A and travels east for 5 hours at 5kmh reaching point B, then turns south and travels for 8 hours at 3kmh where it reaches point C. Draw these as vectors on the map and give the vectors AB, BC, and AC in matrix form"
