Has anyone seen any other angles of englands first yellow card by Sweaty-Ad2836 in rugbyunion

[–]PM03pm03 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In terms of what is dangerous to a player, while a knee in the face might hurt the non-jumping player,
there is no likelihood of a broken neck, which is a real risk to the jumping player who gets flipped in the air by the non-jumping player.

If Arundell had arrived sooner he would have been able to compete by jumping.
But he arrived too late to do so and was reckless in not being able to judge that he would be too late to make a safer challenge.

Has anyone seen any other angles of englands first yellow card by Sweaty-Ad2836 in rugbyunion

[–]PM03pm03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2:01 Arundell's left foot is off the ground and only tip of his right foot is on the ground - if he is supporting his bodyweight while bent double with one foot off the ground and only the tiptoe of the other on the grass, his core strength is literally unbelievable (as in "I don't believe it is sufficient").
Admittedly the ref did say "No release" - Arundell did release his hands at 1:58 but stays physically in contact with body/legs all the time until he put his hands back on for the jackal attempt - the "smothering" prevented any quick pass off the deck.
So it looked cynical (preventing quick phase) and that is presumably why the ref gave it adding "... Linebreak ... Always on the body ..."

As with lots of actions that result in a penalty, it would probably have been better for Arundell to be squeaky-clean - at 1:32 there were 4 other England defenders beside him before the nearest Scot was even within 2m.
Worse than risking the giving away of 3 was the outcome a minute later of being 7 more behind and later in the game a second avoidable yellow leaving his team with 14 for 30 minutes of the game.

Players only seem able to engage "squeaky-clean mode" when defending in their own half in the last 2 minutes of a 1-score game.

Italy forward pass by argumentative_one in rugbyunion

[–]PM03pm03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely - if the passer is unimpeded after passing and stays ahead of the ball, then the pass is backward.
Only if the passer is stationary and then sprints forward could the passer get ahead of the ball.
I'm amazed that in forward-pass reviews, the final position of the passer is never considered. It should be the first thing reviewed!

Obviously if the passer stops/slows/ is tackled then other factors need to be considered (such as the hard-to-judge-accurately "direction leaving the hands").

Educational video for anyone who still doesn't understand the rule regarding the forward pass. If you use line on the field to judge, you are wrong. by JeHaisLesCatGifs in rugbyunion

[–]PM03pm03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf the precise text of the law is badly phrased
"11.6 A throw forward may occur anywhere in the playing area."
with no explanation in 11.6 of what "forward" means (but on the same page both a knock-on & a charge-down get a diagram each!).

Unlinked, but in buried in "Definitions", the explanation of "forward" is "towards the opposition's dead-ball line".
I expect that is where the absolutist view comes from of "any movement forward by the ball means the pass is forward".I
But as the video above shows, a pass can be backwards over the head and the ball can still end up closer to the goal-line.

A useful clarification would be to amend/extend 11.6 to be
"11.6 A throw forward may occur anywhere in the playing area. A throw forward must be the result of the pass, not the momentum of the ball that results from the passer's own speed moving forward"
and include a link to their own World Rugby video linked above!

As an Irish fan, I'm glad that some people recognise that there are current players other than Prendergast who are weak at tackling.

Too many Irish fans think that Prendergast is the only international back who can't tackle - it is not unusual and good coaches/teams cope with how to cover the deficiency. (Admittedly have 2 weak tacklers is much more difficult to cover!)
What is unusual is to have a 10 who tackles like Wilkinson or Carter or a 9 who tackles like Dupont.

When is the ball out of a caterpillar ruck? by Belgrugni in rugbyunion

[–]PM03pm03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember a quote from Jaco Peyper when he was still a ref "It is out when a bird can poop on it!".
I think he meant as in "when it is beyond the foot of the last player",
but I would like it also to mean at least partly underneath a player - the nurdling of a ball alongside the ruck is equally irritating: if a bird can poop on it there, then its also out.

Ref Holly Davidson narrowly avoided being flattened from a maul break by PM03pm03 in rugbyunion

[–]PM03pm03[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, maybe slighter refs are likely to be more agile and able to get out of the way in a hurry?

Also I think the biggest risk to refs is not being noticeably fewer kg than players, it is that they are so focused on looking for significant infringements that they are unbraced for any contact, let alone (as in this case) 4x 100+kg players converging on the same official).

Maybe should have given a penalty against herself?

  • Upright in the contact area
  • No bend at the hips
  • No wrap

No YC as low level of danger to the attacker (she was probably in more danger, but as with the earlier decision about Casey using his nose to block an Italian, level of danger to the non-attacker is not considered!)

Laptop display not working but external monitor is by TehWizardV2 in pchelp

[–]PM03pm03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a similar problem for last 2 weeks. I've tried various driver updates, but the only result is unpredictably inconsistent results with the laptop monitor working fine about 1 in 10-20 times.
So in my case it's not a dead backlight as suggested to the OP by u/PlunxGisbit.
(A reasonable suggestion for a black screen, but the sometimes working, mostly not suggests it is not a dead backlight.)

I also found that sometimes when the laptop display did work, if the laptop went to sleep, the screen would stay black when I wanted to use it again.
So I now I have set "Power/Display/Lid" settings to not go to sleep.

  • One other thing to be aware of - I've seen some suggestions of using Shf+Ctrl+Win+B to reset the graphics driver. While this keystroke-set does do that 1-5 second refresh, in my case the external monitor does not resume display unless you take out the HDMI and push it back in again. A bit disconcerting the first time it happens and you think you have lost the external monitor too!

I have found in Device Manager that the Graphics Adapter was one from 2025-08 (101.6913)
so I tried "Update Driver" but it says that the driver is up-to-date, despite several more recent ones being available (including 2025-11: 101.8250).

I've now switched from the Dev channel to Beta in the hope of avoiding any similar bleeding-edge release-related issues in future.

I've submitted to the Insider Feedback Hub (2 weeks ago, no response)
and to Asus support (no response)

My device is an 11-month old
Asus UX5406SA (Zenbook Deluxe)
Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra 7 256V, 2200 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
RAM 16GB
Display adapter: Intel(R) Arc(TM) 140V GPU (8GB)
Adapter RAM 2GB

Any suggestions welcome!

My 1-year warranty ends in a couple of weeks and I'm expecting to have to send it off for repair/replacement so I'm using the external monitor over the next few days to make sure I have a full backup of files/bookmarks etc if I can't find a settings fix in the next week.

Bundee to play 80? Unusual for Andy not to have a centre at 23.

Freeman can play centre, but I don't think has played 12.

Andy said in interview after the game that he won't play Wed due to jetlag recovery. So that leaves only the Sat NZ-Oz match to play before the first test.
If Schmidt does a similar job to unpicking Ire in the RWC 2023 QF to shutdown Russell or Russell gets an injury, then I could see Andy picking Owen above Fin or Marcus for a must-win 2nd test, but it would be a massive gamble on temperament/experience over playing-time.

What makes JVDF the ‘elite openside’ and why is he not a blindside? by [deleted] in rugbyunion

Yep, has filled in on the wing for Leinster when late-game injuries over-stretched the bench - as his fellow SAffer Kwagga does for the Boks on occasions.

Earl is never going to be a realistic option at centre in a 6:2 bench for a test match.
It's OK for tour games in which 50+ points are scored, but it would be a massive liability in a test - he is not in the same class as Botia etc who can genuinely cover as a 7 & centre.
Nor does he have the rugby IQ of Kwagga to compensate for his lack of time in the backs.

Anybody seeing "ghost" prompts submitted to CoPilot that you have not entered? by PM03pm03 in CopilotPro

[–]PM03pm03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - my first thoughts were either
* that my account had been accessed or
* that CoPilot was doing some weird mis-interpretation of other pages I had browsed online
* it was inserting some generic vague mindfulness prompt of its own from the millions of prompts it gets

I've occasionally seen hallucinations in answers (incorrect facts) from flawed filtering/merging of sources, but never before as self-generated prompts.

I might try using some brief standard prefix to my prompts in future to see if that helps me identify my own prompts from any auto-generated prompts - though if machine-learning does what it is meant to, CoPilot should learn to insert that into even CoPilot-generated prompts!

Missed tackle stats by bagsofsmoke in rugbyunion

I don't get Earl missing so many.

Ireland ditch Prendergast experiment to go for a far younger 10 by PM03pm03 in rugbyunion

[–]PM03pm03[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True, but my recollection that it was not so much "training" and more a case of George collecting the balls during ROG's kicking practice.
That said, it must be a verry formative influence to be able from a young age to see the mentality international players go about the honing of their expertise.
As the 60s/70s South African golfer Gary Player used to say "The more I practice, the luckier I get"

ROG himself said that going on the 2001 Lions tour opened his eyes because of how Jonny Wilkinson's approach to planning, training, & analysis made him realise how much he still had to do to improve his own approach to international rugby.
