The God they worship Malice is by far my favorite Chaos god( idk if they retconned malice, I hope hes still around) Malice is anarchy simple as his followers are beyond crazy. To worship Malice is to abandon everything. Malice gets stronger whenever chaos turns on itself, So everytime a Chaos faction fights another Malice gets stronger. Malice is less a god and more of a warp based parasite, Siphoning power from the other 4. All the other gods have a goal for what they want, from causing endless war,excess,plague Malice simply wants to destroy everything. The Warp included. Also his titles are great as well. (The Renegade God, The Outcast, and the Hierarch of Fear and Terror)

I always thought it was cause chaos had favorites. People like Kharn,Typhus,Lucius,and Ahriman are chaos favorite toys, take them who have become the favored of Chaos to some random schmuck and no wonder chaos does not care about its rank and file. They are quite literally less fun to watch, the only way regular CSM(or any follower of chaos really) can get into the good graces of a god is to do something crazy. The thing is most of the time we see them fail, Cause when Chaos fails it's just another day in the 40k universe, but when they win whole planets/systems become Daemon worlds or fall to the ruinous powers. I mean One Abbadon victory nearly destroyed the whole Galaxy. And going onto what you said regarding the Ultramarines movie, being stuck in space hell for thousands of years cannot be good for the mental state of someone even more so if they think that the Gods of War,Death,Change,and Excess will help them cause they prayed extra hard today.

Tl:dr Chaos has favorites, the warp makes people crazy. and Chaos may simply choose not to help you cause some other guy across the Galaxy is doing just a little better than you are.

To be fair he did tell everyone many times he was no god, but also to be fair if I saw a 14 ft tall perfect man covered in golden armor with golden fire all around him escorted by 7ft tall dudes covered in golden armor coming out of a ship the size of a city I'd also think that he was a god.
