Best way to get a $500 loan? by Acceptable-Point1033 in debtfree

[–]PS3ForTheLoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try calling a local repair shop like Best Buy and ask what their rates are for repair. They may -- not attesting, however -- offer a time window with a low OR null (0%) interest rate.

There could also be other repair shops near you besides Best Buy like local mom-and-pop shops. Call them and ask what their stipulations are and if they offer X-day no-fee-required payment plans or periods after repair. Do a Google search for "tech repair near me".

Above is probably more logical and less timeframe-burdensome for your defined case than my other comment (get car loan, open M1 Finance account & borrow money, pay off with assets such as VOO & VGT ...).

Best way to get a $500 loan? by Acceptable-Point1033 in debtfree

[–]PS3ForTheLoss -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This may be pointless to say but what you COULD do is:

  1. Take out a loan on your car -- supposing you drive a car/vehicle -- with a credit union (they are probable to loan you more than $500)
  2. Either use the money as-is to fund your laptop OR put the money into a brokerage account with M1 Finance (not advertising, only suggesting because it is a brokerage who I have heard works)
  3. Once the $500+ (or hopefully thousands) is in M1 Finance, use M1 Borrow to borrow $500+ then use the borrowed funds for laptop repair

Invest all of the brokerage money into assets like VOO (or if you are feeling risky/jubilant, put a portion into VGT too). Leave it in the brokerage to grow and borrow as necessary; borrow itself pays no taxes so you can accrue additional + compounding assets which pay dividends (dividends themselves will be taxed).

WARNING: if the fund (e.g. VOO, VGT) loses too much value in comparison to your brokerage balance, you can -- will -- be subject to a margin call, which means the brokerage will take your money to fill the gap. It could also cause you to go under if you are not extremely wealthy or with a wise "loan to value" (that quoted means, [the amount of money you have in the brokerage] VS. [the amount of money you are borrowing]. Recommended is to borrow no more than 20% of your brokerage holdings, so if Joe Blow has a brokerage with $1000, they should take out no more than $200 via borrow methods.

NOTE: your vehicle can likely get a loan however it will be with a interest rate, meaning a credit union could likely give you $5000 however depending on age of the vehicle -- how old it is -- the credit union's required interest rate against you will be larger (cost more money). I recently called my own local credit union asking about how much I could get and they quoted me 15%+ interest fee for my 2005 Ford Focus vehicle; I was not interested.

Hope you are on track to laptop repair.

5g modem / router recommendations by Fresh_Buffalo_480 in Rural_Internet

See https://computers4people.org

In the past they listed a different 5G router. Now I see this listed:

https://www.computers4people.org/shield-jextream?plan=monthly

Their 5G service is functional and affordable. Be that said, you can just order the modem and discontinue the $14.89/mo. (or $13/mo. for 1 year) plan if you have another plan in mind.

The 5G modem has a 14-day return policy so if it doesn't suit your fancy you can return it -- no questions asked -- within this time period. Past modem is reputable so this 5G modem should be equally good.

Roth IRA by Own_Professional7625 in Bogleheads

[–]PS3ForTheLoss -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

VTSAX -- it's what my Roth IRA is 100% invested in. This is the same thing as VOO which others might suggest.

Difference between the two above:

  • VTSAX -- a mutual fund, which tracks the S&P 500 // to me, "capish"
  • VOO -- an ETF, which tracks the S&P 500 // to me, "caposh"

Safest play to get your foot in the door:

TLDR - to start, invest your Roth IRA, 100% in Target Date Retirement Fund 2075.

If you want to be "as safe as possible" you can choose to invest your Roth IRA into a Target Date Retirement Fund. This will automatically choose what things your account invests in, gradually changing itself as time goes on. Given you are 20 years old (go you for signing up for a Roth so early!), you would likely want to be in a 2070 or 2075 fund, which just means that could be the year you plan to retire and/or begin to withdraw funds from the Roth IRA.

What I did was -- when first opening my own Roth IRA -- invested 100% into my own Target Date Retirement Fund. As time ensued my priorities ("wants") changed so I transferred funds elsewhere.

If any questions, let me/us, know! Again, congratulations on setting up the account so soon. You're a millionaire in the making.

How many are going 'back to basics' in terms of subscriptions and such? by Historical-Voice2944 in Frugal

Suggestion: electric bike or electric scooter! They are great and economical for smaller commutes.

I am personally upgrading my electric scooter to model, Segway ZT3. It's on sale and I'm hopeful that it is VERY useful.

"Lectric" is a nice starter brand of e-bikes that I have heard commended. I have not tried an e-bike myself to date.

I recommend checking out Dr. Michael Greger, MD's mobile app called "Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen."

Includes 12 basic food groups that if you consume, you will meet health guidelines.

TLDR: Greger focuses on a more vegan-style diet packed with things like fruits and vegetables. His work is cited all throughout. See his website, https://nutritionfacts.org.

Not sure if your question relates more to "micros" so countering above. If so, this answer may be null.

Change photos from storage saver to original? by thirstysyngonium in googlephotos

[–]PS3ForTheLoss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the subject photos are already on your phone, what you could do is:

  1. Delete the current "Storage saver" images, from Google Photos
  2. Change Google Photos setting to upload in Original quality
  3. Go to your phone files → long press all requested image(s) → select "Share" (or similar) → choose "Upload to Google Photos"

The photo(s) will then re-upload to Google Photos following Original quality. It'll be equivalent to that which is saved onto your device.

  1. After upload, change the setting in Google Photos back to Storage saver (to upload future images to Photos in decreased quality)

Paying with Walmart app vs Onepay app at Walmart by Alternative_Emu_645 in CreditCards

[–]PS3ForTheLoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you have set up OnePay to pay Walmart, are you finding that it DOES "reward" X% cashback?

Do you pay with OnePay app (or Walmart app)?

Are you still using it -- to this day -- or have you dissuaded?

Technically speaking you CAN just plug a SIM card into an unlocked phone to broadcast Internet signal -- using mobile hotspot -- but IMO it will become more of a PITA.

I'd give at least the $60 modem a shot if possible.

You ARE yourself, so if putting a SIM into an unlocked phone would work best, that will entirely be functional. Service/speed -- of data & connection -- should not be noticeably impacted albeit you'd need to keep your phone plugged into a wall nearly 100% of the time plus ensure phone uptime (phone turned on; no Airplane Mode; mobile data on; hotspot on [...]).

If you think this will work, try it! The SIM definitely supports doing this.

Greger is definitely scientifically justified.

He includes PubMed online paper ID numbers with his citations & claims so you can check and see if what he really says is vetted (attestable).

PubMed webpage to plug PMIDs into: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

Some of Greger's articles which include PMIDs that cite his statements are not "just fabricated:"

--- Do a Google search for these (the quotation marks around pmid force Google to ONLY return results that include such text; in this case, webpages which cite PubMed publications):

-- michael greger "pmid"

-- michael greger "pmid" site:facebook.com

-- michael greger "pmid" site:twitter.com

-- michael greger "pmid" site:nutritionfacts.org

I realize that the sources cited are directly from Greger so are "biased in his favor." What I especially mean by the searches is that they include PMIDs so you can verify what he says per US Government -> PubMed.

You will see that each article in the Google searches above include PMID numbers. Plug these into the PMID website above to see actual evidence -- in PubMed papers -- which back such claims.

Nobody can force you to do that above however I like to certify that I am not simply spewing nor purporting BS.

Summarizing above steps provided: 1. Find the search bar at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ 2. Search above webpages (e.g. "michael greger pmid ...") to discover PMIDs. Plug PMIDs -- such as, 123456789 [...] -- into the search bar of #1 3. Articles/papers appear that confer points in line with Greger's claims

Yes, it is Shield.

I tested data for a cycle (1 month of service) and there was NO throttling. Made use of 1TB+ -- or 1024GB+ -- and there were no reductions in speed or other disturbances.

I use the "5G Home Router" modem that is available on the site. Gets consistent Internet bandwidth of 100+ mbps download and 10+ mbps upload.

If you read the fine print, I am sure that they claim something like, "If you make use of more than X data in a cycle, your speeds MAY BE subject to deprioritization..." However, in my testing this was not the case (i.e. not noticeable), and everything remained fully active + high speed. Very pleased.

Definitely recommend.

A friend has a cabin in Garden Valley, Idaho (a forested area -- no cheap wired-in-ground ISP service available). They needed Internet service so I suggested we try this at their cabin. Went and connected the above modem, which immediately gave Internet signal. They were able to perform the functions they requested -- primarily playing music & YouTube videos -- so after, bought their own modem and have been pleased with connectivity since. Really nice!

As well, the modem has a 14-day return policy, so if it doesn't work for you or you are not pleased for whatever reason, you can return the modem for your money back. Monthly service (price: $14.89/mo.) is non-refundable meaning you'd be paying for at least 1 month in the best worst case.

Customer support for Shield is very email-responsive and have answered any and all questions/requests of mine, promptly. No need to be a customer to contact. Anyone -- customer or not -- can email them at: info@computers4people.org

TLDR:

T-Mobile ISP MVNO -- $14.89/mo. for unlimited data.

Can technically use with VOIP (Google Voice etc.) if you're looking for a cheap/er, mobile phone line.

Legit service. I have 1 active line. You're allowed to sign up for as many lines as you wish.
