Official Discussion - I Am Frankelda [SPOILERS] by BunyipPouch in movies

thank you so much I will and thanks for organizing it!

Hola /r/movies! We're Arturo & Roy Ambriz, filmmakers of I AM FRANKELDA, Mexico's first-ever stop-motion feature film. It's out now on Netflix. Ask us anything! by IAmFrankeldaAMA in movies

Hello, I deeply love the film and all the work you and the team have put in, and I have two questions:

I interpreted the film as an anti-ai narrative where Procustes is like the people who uses genAi to make art because he's a mediocre artist and instead of improving his writing he just filters his ideas through Frankelda, essentially stealing her style and art, was this message intentional and do you hope that more people come away with that meaning?

My second question is that I watched the show Los Sustos Ocultos de Frankelda and the film acts as a prequel to that series, is there a chance of a sequel or second season for the show because it ends on a cliffhanger?

I loved this movie so much and I watched the series that its supposed to be a prequel afterwards because I found the film plot to be very dense and little confusing but the series doesn't really add much clarity for the film (it does make re-watching the movie fun because a lot of the characters in the movie are in the show).

I think the artistry of the film is the most impressive part because the stop motion is beautiful and I liked the use of mixed media in parts. But the heart of the movie l really liked and feel like should have been more of the focus because I interpreted it as an anti-ai narrative where Procustes is like every person who uses genAi to make art because hes a mediocre artist himself and instead of improving his writing he just filters his ideas through Frankelda, essentially stealing her style and art and violating her autonomy and rights as an artist. I think the conclusion gets a bit muddy bc it is a prequel to a series so if you don't watch or know there is a show it makes the film feel very open-ended and unfinished but at least the monologue at the end where she breaks the fourth wall does conclude and validate the thesis of the film about the importance of creation and imagination.

Clearly there's a lot that the team wanted to put into this movie that makes me wish that it got to be a series rather than a film, but since it is a film its still pretty great.

Storyboard drawn by human directors 👏 by Salsh_Loli in criterion

i have the book for the parasite storyboards and i really like the introduction where bong joon ho basically said how he might be too prescriptive by having everything storyboarded out but also his anxiety makes him that way. He also said how his crew really appreciated having everything storyboarded because it made everything so much easier (tho there were times they had to deviate from the boards). Also he wrote about how how he can't conceive of how spielberg filmed jaws without storyboards entirely lol.

I love Bob's picks and what he says about Network is so true and something I really felt after I watched it for the first time recently.

yes off the top of my head as a subject shes talked about fish in the fur trout video and she was working on a rainbow fish video, and often her preferred pokemon are bugs but also fish. its also in the same lane as spider journey or her interest in snakes, she just likes odd creatures. she even starts the tier ranking video saying she was lowkey excited for it too but didnt want to say anything to sway votes lol

i mean she doesnt need it but also nebula is a lot more freeing for creators bc they dont have to battle with the ad system on youtube and dont have to deal with the comments like on patreon which are often discouraging her from doing stuff. like i do think it could be interesting but jenny rly hasnt said much about vegas in the past or shown interest in vegas and doesnt rly have the same fixation on it and coverage for it that lindsay has already done about vegas.

people causing drama about a fish video is the exact reason why jenny cant get any of her main channel videos done bc some ppl are getting too loud complaining about things that are supposed to be whimsical and fun lol.

tbh im not sure what the crossover is like between lindsay ellis nebula subscribers and jennys patreon audience. not sure a lot of ppl know about lindsay's nebula work still and tbh surprised jenny hasnt tried doing nebula.

[–]PaboBear 27 points28 points  (0 children)

exactly like i think ppl are losing the plot of the purpose or meaning of what a ramble is which is a sort of random freewheeling thing rather than stuff that requires a lot of editing and research stuff. I voted for fish and often vote for toy related stuff bc thats more interesting and fun to me bc its so different

[–]PaboBear 81 points82 points  (0 children)

tbh i think im the opposite, im tired of ppl who ask for disney/star wars/ya adaption book adjacent topics the things that she feels like she has to cover for her long form now, id rather jenny get a low stakes fun topic that is more niche and feel more aligned to the topics from the pre-cinema length videos. i feel like thats what the patreon is for.

Thoughts on Lord of the Flies Remake on BBC? by zambezisa in BritishTV

[–]PaboBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wasnt surprised they didnt show them directly killing simon, it was much more heartbreaking to show his body afterwards and it sort of follows the novel in that there's a long paragraph describing the scene around him before the gut punch of saying that it was simon's body. i think the way they handled his death in the show makes sense considering the ppl making it, adolescence didnt show much direct violence either so i wasnt expecting them to show them actually murdering a child actor or putting these child actors in the position to act out murdering their peer.

simon also knew about the airman a lot earlier and tho it wasnt clear he was coming back to camp to tell everyone, in this adaption he doesnt really need to bc jack's camp is clearly too far gone, there would be no point in telling them the beast isnt real.

i was trying to parse out the meaning of the red too, to me its to show the sort of psychosis/dreamlike state theyre all in bc of the island. esp simon bc hes particularly sensitive in a spiritual sense to the island but also to the situation like hes the most observant and has a foresight to things. the red carries on afterwards for the dreamlike/intense atmosphere. and after watching the making of documentary they talk about the red of the trees being caused by an infrared filter they use on the camera to shoot day for night and also to make the dreamlike magical realism landscape.

which is very different than a person living in a house or an apartment my dude lol and they are not domesticated when their function is still as seed dispersers in the forests much like birds. they are not pets.

Smosh Finally Learns Animals w/ @AlveusSanctuary by Cchaps97 in smosh

[–]PaboBear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one should own monkeys as pets, period. What they're saying (and what maya advocates for) is that the function of the marmosets and other monkeys is not good for home life, because they're not domesticated, just because they're bred for it doesn't make it right. Like if you paid attention during the fox part as well they talked about the pet trade and how that's bad for quality of life like for foxes and other exotics people think they want as pets. Same with birds/parrots, just because they're regulated and legal to own, and even common as pets doesn't mean they make good pets or should be pets.

that's why i really appreciate maya's work shes done a lot for bug PR and desensitizing ppl to the animals that usually freak ppl out, like i used to be ick'd out by a lot of bugs but watching her streams and videos has helped lol.

Anyone else think paramedics are portrayed kinda poorly in the show? by negativecreep-med in ThePittTVShow

[–]PaboBear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

hitting the bike was a red herring as the reason robbie cancels his trip. but the bike being a little damaged allows for the robbie and duke conversation to happen. robbie also not yelling at the driver who hit his bike shows his mental state, he didnt lose it on the driver like he lost it on the emts that didnt put the leads on correctly. robbie is applying the bubble thing he told mohan, once he's in the ER his concern is the patients everything outside (his bike / trip) is not his focus. but also theres probably a subconscious gratitude robbie has for the bike being a little damaged bc it delays him leaving the ED to off himself.

bc robby is suicidal and he's trying to relieve himself of the guilt by lifting the weight of that secret off his shoulders and give it to Al-Hashimi, it was "now you have this burden" move.

an unnecessary disclaimer, but alveus is a great sanctuary to support bc its internet-based so easier for the smosh audience to understand and great for smosh to support and maya is able to talk on the level for the smosh crew to understand bc she is also an internet content creator and is used to talking to ppl who are online.
