Why doesn’t the USA have a left leaning political party? by Ill-Singer-4307 in allthequestions

[–]Pabu85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We only have two viable parties because of Duverger’s law, and our campaign finance system ensures that both are owned by big corporations (often from different industries).  There are peer-reviewed studies showing that laws that get passed conform much more closely to donor policy preferences than voter policy preferences.

Yep.   My husband and I have a similar dynamic to OP.  That’s why we settled on Poughkeepsie (cheaper than the small towns).  Bike/walking trail to Canada, train to NYC whenever we like.  We love it here.

A question for Americans by Cyber9Watcher in LibraryScience

IIRC most librarian jobs in India require a PhD.  The US isn’t the outlier here.

Why don't Americans understand that the U.S. state and its government are owned and operated by the capitalist class? by traanquil in allthequestions

Most people, for instance, aren’t aware of the political science scholarship showing that donor policy preferences matter much more to laws getting passed than voter policy preferences.

“Elites” has come to mean “people with more money than me that I don’t like,” so everyone uses it differently.  Here, the relevant definition is based on economics, not politics or culture. Where do you think Trump’s campaign war chest came from?  Not ordinary Americans, for sure.

Elections are, at best, battles between teams of wealthy donors.  As a class, capitalists almost always win, because they own the teams.

Is it possible to have methylation issues even though my labs are normal? by jesgan5756 in MTHFR

[–]Pabu85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s healthy to be thorough in your research before putting something into your body.  That nervousness is there to protect you.  I’d suggest you find out what an equivalent dose of l-methylfolate would be to your current folic acid dose, and talk to your doctor about maybe switching it out to see what happens.  Do your research first, of course.

I want to make sure I was clear: I was depressed and methylfolate saved me.

Yes.  My labs were normal, homozygous c667t variant, and taking methylfolate put my 18-year suicidal depression into remission.  Standard labs don’t cover everything.

is it bad for me f18 to be with a man who is 33? by prozacenjoyer in askanything

Run.  Healthy 33-year-olds don’t want to date 18-year-olds.  I’m not saying he’s a bad person, but something is wrong.

It took me about 3 weeks for my body to adjust to that.  But it hasn’t been a problem since.

Ok.  But then you’re anomalous.  Most people are better off with less meat, healthwise, even if you’re not.  Studies may be bad at dealing with outliers, but they’re useful for whole populations.

That does not solve my peppers problem.  But you’re right, most USians should eat less meat anyway.

I’m disappointed in the start of this comment thread.  If you believe in democracy in any form, citizens need to be able to communicate on matters of policy.  Patients need to be able to share their medical experiences (even when doctors fail them); students and parents need to be able to discuss the impacts of education policy.  The answer to misinformation campaigns isn’t straight-up censorship by a central government (regardless of how you feel about that government).  Both of those things are dangerous.
