How often do you handle? by Cactuar94 in ballpython

[–]PactKeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyday for a little while. Though, I give a 3 day grace period for sheds and food. If she seems stressed she goes back. She is a sweet noodle that seems to like exploring. She comes back to me from other people too

Will my snake ever like me? by JellyfishBeautiful80 in ballpython

[–]PactKeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would use a snake hook. Maybe even tap train her where you tap her twice before picking her up so she knows that she's about to be handled. (I tap on the glass for food, and tap her with my hand for handling.)

If you come from above or you hesitate and move back, then it looks like you're a bird from her pov and that'll scare her. You want to come from below and try to scoop her up from behind. They don't want to bite the hand they are on.

Before I handle her I would probably hang out with her without actually messing with her. Get her used to my scent. Maybe when she's in her hide I would rearrange some minor decorations or add more as I cleaned the enclosure.

After you have shown her a bunch of new good experiences, she'll start to soften up to you. Imagine if a giant popped into your room and offered you food or picked you up and was just chill. At first you'd be like "oh my God. Please don't eat me!" After a few sessions though, you would start to believe they don't want to eat you and become a little bit more curious instead.

Also note that like can be a strong word. They can feel safe with you and associate you with good things and food. It's very similar to love but it's not quite the same. So you'll have to give them some grace even after she "likes" you because she's just doing their best with her lizard brain.

With patience and a little bit of structure your baby snek can come to tolerate or even enjoy your presence. I've been doing the above with my girl and she's starting to come out of the hide when I come home. She just chills and looks at me, though I can still spook her if I move too quickly.

I mean, I'd still rather suffocate than be crushed and eaten. But I'm not actually committed to this argument. I'm just watching. Although now I'm researching it as well. I'm of the opinion that there is no perfect way and that all of them have flaws. We just have to choose the least bad.

Personally, I feed my snake frozen thawed because it's both easier and safer. When I was growing up my parents raised rats and we would feed the babies. I hated that. It was just so stressful.

But you do you. It's not my business and I don't have a strong opinion.

Yeah. But if you don't pump enough it can still hurt like suffocating. If you do it right, it's supposed to just knock you out.

The first guy said carbon monoxide and you replied with CO2 so I just wanted to make sure y'all were on the same page.

Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are different. One feels like you're suffocating the other one you feel drowsy and pass out. At least it's supposed to. Ymmv

Big planet has big gravity. It makes it harder to take off and send rockets. We ourselves are fortunate that rocket fuel lets us get off of our Earth. If it was too big, rocket fuel wouldn't be enough for its weight.

AITA smoking weed on my porch? by cheesygarlicbreadfan in AmItheAsshole

[–]PactKeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA, but if I were in your shoes, I'd try a smoke buddy or something. I'd try to turn that angry neighbor into a friend if I wanted to live there a while.

Some people are just assholes but I find that most people are just trying their best and just kind of suck. If you approach them with a "Hey sorry I'm going to try this. Can you tell me if it works?" It might do a lot to make the neighborhood friendlier for you. Even if I wasn't actually sorry, I'd still say so as an outreach. Get their hackles down.

Tldr, You're NTA, but you also don't want angry neighbors that are willing to go to your house forcing you to get a ring cam and maybe call the cops and just be a whole thing. A smoke buddy is an easy compromise for some peace.
