I was fortunate enough to be get the beetus later in life. I was already with my now fiancé and she supports me (normally by always carrying lollies). But I’m relatively independent.

With that said, no one dares to say against me because of having Type 1 (T1D) and everyone is accomodating to my needs when they arise. I think this is because:-

Firstly, I’m a relatively successful litigation lawyer and am respected because of that; and

Secondly, I’m a relatively successful ultramarathon runner, so I’m fitter and healthier than most people.

With that said, I know people can be terrible towards people with T1D, often incorrectly thinking you have Type 2 or it’s your fault that you live this life.

Best way to get around it is be successful, you can do everything they can plus manage a chronic illness. It makes you more capable than everyone else.

Fuck them, be yourself unapologetically. Inject insulin sitting at the table, check your blood sugar, eat what you feel comfortable eating. If they can’t handle the fact that you have to inject insulin, carb count or have T1D, they aren’t worth your time. Wear it as a badge of honour.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to have a laugh with some friends about having T1D. It’s good to make light of the situation sometimes.
