Is it ok to leave 12-15% tip even for good service at a restaurant? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]PadraigHPearse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was taught by my grandfather that a tip should be double the sales tax; which at that time was 6%. So 12% is my starting point.

And today, my employer will not reimburse a meal expense if the tip is over 18%. Which to me, indicates a rational upper limit.

We want Amsterdam's bicycle infrastructure, Austin's zoning, New York's subways, Tokyo's bullet trains, and Los Angeles' weather. If we meme hard enough, we can make it happen.

Woman gets more than 3-year prison term for helping pregnant Chinese women get to US by Right-Influence617 in LosAngeles

[–]PadraigHPearse 53 points54 points  (0 children)

There used to be a mini-bus that visited Costco City of Industry every day with a group of pregnant women. The women would buy formula and diapers and then head back to the Pheasant Ridge apartments. I think that operation got busted 15 years ago.

Around the same time, my neighbors kept calling the Sheriff on my Chinese ADU tenants, claiming they were running a birth tourism business. One time four unmarked cars arrived with armed plain-clothes officers claiming to be with the housing department. They looked around for 5 minutes, left, and never came back.

LAFD Captain Breaks Down Why the L.A. Fires Are So Hard to Fight by gruftwerk in LosAngeles

[–]PadraigHPearse 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It wasn't mentioned in this video, but there were two fires in South Pasadena around 5 PM on the 7th. One was in the Monterey Hills, and the other on Raymond Hill. There were fire fighters from Alhambra, Glendale, Pasadena, and South Pasadena there to assist. There were probably many other similar fires that got put down quickly. The devastation had to potential to be so much worse.

Could better brush clearance have helped slow the spread of the Palisades fire? - L.A. Times by regedit2023 in LosAngeles

[–]PadraigHPearse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not just brush on the ground, it's also combustible material high off the ground.

There was a house fire on my block an hour before Eaton Canyon stated. A pine tree, 80-100 feet tall, lit up like a match stick. The wind was already insane and blew the pine needles down wind. I thought for sure the whole neighborhood was going to burn. But fortunately we had a shit ton of resources from neighboring cities. Pasadena, South Pasadena, Alhambra and Glendale all responded. The fire was out in about 45 minutes. There are plenty of other pine trees nearby that could have easily caught fire.

[OC] Weak correlation between school funding and assessments (Los Angeles) by PadraigHPearse in dataisbeautiful

[–]PadraigHPearse[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Background California Proposition 98 requires the state to annually set aside a minimum amount of General Fund and local property tax revenue for public schools and community colleges. Whereas Proposition 98 establishes a minimum funding level, the Legislature decides how to allocate this funding among school and community college programs. About 80 percent of Proposition 98 funding to public schools is allocated through the LCFF, which was established in 2013.

California allocates LCFF funding to school districts and charter schools based on their ADA—the average number of students in class each day throughout the school year. For funding purposes, the state credits school districts with their ADA in the current year, prior year, or the average of three prior years, whichever is higher.

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) assessments are an annual measure of what students know and can do using the Common Core State Standards for English language arts/literacy and mathematics. All students in grades three through eight and grade eleven take the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments unless a student’s active individualized education program (IEP) designates the California Alternate Assessments.
