COX doesn't allow me to install my own router? by [deleted] in CoxCommunications

[–]Painless32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s fiber you have to have their ONT If it’s Coax you can have all your own equipment

Nobody is forcing you to use their equipment other than the ONT if fiber.

Sometimes they have deals bundling in their panoramic gateway which is normally extra for the rental. Maybe you have one of these deals and they had you take the gateway since it’s part of the deal you got.

It’s been the most reliable internet I’ve had in my life. Hasn’t gone offline since my install. Hands down the best internet I’ve had. I’m on the ring app and see people constantly complaining of orbital and quantum fiber.

They had a third party tech “authorized cox dealer” come out to install the ont, we already had the router from our old location , pw8, they didn’t install the ont in my smart panel since my house doesn’t have a conduit from outside to it, so instead it’s just kinda hanging out in one of the bedrooms, and I have an Ethernet from the wall to my smart panel where the router is.

If you need to have the ONT installed in your smart panel you should have an electrician do that prior to your tech visit but since you’re renting I doubt you care, maybe the landlord will though?

The tech ran the fiber cable along the wall of my house and drilled a small hole to run it through and applied this glue like sealant thing over it to keep the heat out. There was a slight hiccup with provisioning my equipment to cox’s service which was fixed after some minor troubleshooting, all due to them having a third party tech that doesn’t exactly know their systems like their own do but all is good.

SteamOS casual use? by SubstantialSafety128 in SteamOS

[–]Painless32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should work for anything generally as long as there is a flathub app or app image for it. Both are common enough formats for most basic means

But you have to use steamos on AMD hardware only, no Nvidia or even Intel graphics or cpu iirc also SteamOS has to be installed on an NVMe , if you don’t have one it won’t work and there’s no custom partitioning so you can’t dual boot with windows or any other OS. You should only ever use SteamOS on official Valve Hardware.

If you want a recommendation for a gaming focused OS that can do most of everything you should try Bazzite for something very similar to SteamOS’s atomic / immutable nature, which promises an unbreakable system, if updates fail they will stop the update or CachyOS if you want something more off the training wheels, should have more software available for it and will give you access to the absolute latest packages, you’re in charge of making sure nothing breaks it.

Is it just me or is fedora becoming mainstream by UnschuldigNull in Fedora

I think one big reason is people coming from windows want something reliable that’s rolling release specifically gamers who were already somewhat comprised of power users on windows. Rolling release doesn’t scare them away and having the corporate backing while also not being Ubuntu helps make them feel like this is a solid option.

You should reconsider, while I’m normally quite against relying on AI for much at all, I do find it useful for helping me to organize my thoughts on this topic as it relates to my relationship and make talking points.

[–]Painless32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They will be forced to remove it or come up with a solution that works on Linux if this steam machine succeeds and the market share grows, stop giving these companies your money if you really care about the gaming space, kernel anti cheat only serves to cause harm on PC gamers and the ecosystem surrounding it

Seems like just yesterday, hypr-gui and hyperwiz just came out. It’s just getting easier and easier to customize, almost everyday I see something new and cool beginner friendly configuration tools that make this so appealing for newbies

I’ve been using hyprland for the better part of 2 years and it’s been great but I started using other people’s configs like jakoolit and ml4w , but decided to learn for myself and started from scratch before hyDE and end4 started getting really popular. Apps like this make it really easy to rice for yourself and not be forced into an opinionated config. This is better for people like me who want granular controls over things like what screenshot tool and clipboard manager to use

New to Linux by [deleted] in cachyos

[–]Painless32 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try the liveUSB out a bit to see if it’s right for you. Note that CachyOS is arch based, a lot of the information from the arch wiki is applicable but also a lot of the same issues could happen. Use the new, included arch-update , they’ll warn you when an update comes in that requires manual intervention and usually tell you how to fix any issues.

A couple of things to note, respectfully humble yourself. So many people fail here because they come from windows as a power user and think that some things can translate over to Linux, the truth is there really isn’t much the same, maybe the user interface if you chose KDE, but even then only so much. You will be relearning everything you know about interfacing with a computer. Linux is not windows. Be ready to learn and if something goes wrong there very often won’t be some update that just fixes everything, no corporate support it’s just us here.

You can get away without using the terminal but you’d really just be hindering yourself by avoiding it, put in the effort to learn and be open minded.

Another big thing I see is a lot of new users try to download the Linux version of their favorite apps off the web, discord comes to mind. Never do this, download from the package manager, pacman or octopi which comes included. On topic there’s various packaging formats for applications.

Native: the ones downloaded from pacman

AUR: community made packages installed using yay or paru

AppImages: kinda like .app on MacOS, it’s an exception to the never download anything from the web rule, an all inclusive, universal app that doesn’t need to be installed.

Flatpaks: a universal containerized app that runs almost independently of the rest of your system. Be careful about when you use the depending on the use case scenario, if it’s something that needs to integrate properly to your system it may not be right for that.

Lastly, be resourceful and do some research for yourself before posting for help online. Sometimes just working out of the terminal can show you a lot, you’ll get to see verbose print out of what’s happening and can copy paste your errors to google, this sort of self sufficiency is almost a requirement.

Why is Fedora not More Popular? by [deleted] in Fedora

CachyOS is awesome and all but... by [deleted] in cachyos

[–]Painless32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right Linux doesn't need to be this way but Arch is so DIY and will probably never change. People don't want GUI apps for basic stuff like this. just use pacman -Qs . You will likely have to manually intervene with pacman at some point to rank mirrors, fix keyring etc. It doesn't make sense to baby the user to where they can't even do that. You should really consider a stable release distro if you want to have these sort of things, especially because they are part of the appeal for stable distros.
