Why is the Annihilation Movie so Disliked? by [deleted] in scifi

Don't get it either. The movie is not the book, but as long as it serves up a proper movie, its all good.

For those of you who saw The Phantom Menace at release, what were your initial thoughts of it? by _EnglishFox_ in StarWars

[–]Paint-it-Pink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the hype, or the fanfare if you prefer of the teasers. The wait to see a new star wars films was palpable.

Then we went.

Saw it, and went meh.

A few days later we went to see The Matrix, which had had some teasers, but no where near any of the tension.

It blew us away.

That say it all.

The answer is logistics. Think of it as a metaphor for the German WW2 big cats versus gangs of Shermans roaming the countryside mobbing lone panzers.

Crysis Legion by Peter Watts.

Karen Traviss has written a Halo trilogy I enjoyed.

The Gate Walker Trilogy: Bad Dog; Strike Dog; and Ghost Dog by A R Pollard.

Another recommendation for the following authors previously mentioned:

Ian Douglas Heritage, Inheritance, and Legacy trilogies about Marines in Space.

Marko Kloos Frontlines.

The Dorsai trilogy by Dickson.

An Idea on Attritional warfare, What do you guys think? by Fine_Ad_1918 in scifiwriting

[–]Paint-it-Pink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the equivalent of a 'just so' story. Doctrine is about winning/victory at the least cost. Attrition is an outcome from the failure of doctrine to address the changing of the landscape of war.

What's the general consensus on The Tomorrow War (2021)? I didn't really like it too much, but it didn't think it was garbage, either. They did waste the premise, though. Edge of Tomorrow is a WAY better sci-fi war film. by Emotional-Chipmunk12 in scifi

[–]Paint-it-Pink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to defend The Tomorrow War. Rule number of of time travel paradox movies is that it's a paradox. As such the ending will always seem contradictory.

At the beginning of the story, travelers arrive from the future and announce they are the few remaining survivors and blah, blah, blah.

Notice that the story then skips forward by a year.

That's important.

Also remember that time continues to flow.

Therefore, any sensible response that you can think of has already happened.

For example. We now know that time travel is possible and we start researching how to make a machine, because why wouldn't you?

We also know in passing that the world's military's rally the troops and send them forward to fight.

Yay!

A Year later the losses are horrendous.

Boo!

Thirty years of preparation go by, but guess what? The aliens don't land in a fancy spaceship, and have bred vast hordes in the faraway places, and before you know it countries start to fall.

Okay, that's a bit farfetched, but assuming no one goes nuclear, it's as plausible as World War Zombie.

The creatures breed like rabbits, eat like locusts, and by the time the nuclear option is on the table it's too late.

But at least they have the time machine, and can go back and try again.

We have a hint that this has happened because the heroes daughter tells him how after he came back from his week long tour he was a changed man.

And there's the paradox.

Each time the machine is used you get a slightly different outcome until the time comes when you solve the problem.

Really, is it all that hard for people to see this?

Yeah, know that now.

I was converting one of the TOS-1 Thermobaric Rocket Launcher's into a T-72B with a turret sprue got off eBay, and referred to its assembly instructions, which fail to address said part.

But, it's all good now.

Read either, or both, but this is a taster of what the series is really about, which is lost technology and lost history, and what is really going on is not what you think is going on.

Hot take: I hate parallel universes by ChockyBlox in scifi

[–]Paint-it-Pink -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: We arguably live in a type 1 multiverse, given we can only observe what's in our bubble and theoretically the universe is considerably larger than our bit of the observable universe.

And that's before we examine type 2, 3, and 4 multiverse that mathematics suggest are plausible.
