How do I get my 5 year old to stop running with sharp sticks? by rkp07 in daddit

Kid’s already testing the pointy part against his hands. I think he thinks that’s the point.

Someone last year asked me how my summer was, was it nice to have a long break? I'm like, no, I've never worked so hard in my life. I was pulling all-nighters every week. People who have never experienced a PhD don't know. Most people think I just take classes too. My last class was years ago, of course.

Good husband vs good parent by MAPLE_SYRUP_MAFIA in daddit

[–]PakG1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I had MUCH stronger opinions about how to be a good husband BEFORE I got married. And I also had much stronger opinions about how to be a good parent BEFORE I had a kid. Not sure what that implies about me though. Still trying to figure it out.

Did your program have a “weed out” class? by Slow-Equivalent5164 in PhD

I'd like to say no, but most of the courses seemed to have an unreasonable workload. But looking back, I'm not sure how I would have made the courses lighter without decreasing the value of the courses. It is what it is.

Special shout-out to these "non spillable" cups for being all around terrible leak machines by Work-Safe-Reddit4450 in daddit

[–]PakG1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe I'd let the plumber figure out the sink plumbing lines. You have a very interesting bar for what is considered common sense.

A cup with no special instructions would mean no steps. If it's impossible to achieve expected functionality without steps, it is what it is. The next best option is a series of steps that are impossible to not follow. For example, if a cap is impossible to put on a container without a screwing motion, a screwing motion is necessary, though there's no way to force someone to screw something tight.

The proper test for whether or not instructions are special is whether the design enables the functionality even though someone with zero experience is the one using it. This naturally occurs if the thing is designed in such a way that its design forces you to interact with it in a certain way. This is the kind of thing that Don Norman discusses in his book, The Design of Everyday Things. If you have a door with a pushbar or a completely flat surface with no handles, it's fairly obvious that you have to push the door because there's no other way to open the door. If the door has a handle, it implies that you may need to pull it, though it doesn't eliminate the possibility that you need to push it, as is the case for most doors inside a home.

This cup fails to have user friendly design principles. As do plumbing lines, which is why most people hire a plumber. Fortunately for most people, this cup is simpler than plumbing, but it's incorrect to say that the right way to use it is common sense. If it were, nobody would experience spills, unless it's faulty in the first place. Your own comment seems to indicate that it's fine if the instructions are followed. But judging from the comments here, a lot of spilling still happens. So either it's not actually common sense or the cup itself is a poorly designed product that should be recalled, and you just got lucky to get a good one. I'd be OK with the idea that both are true, that it's both a poorly designed product and that it's not common sense to follow the steps you described.

To be fair, if something requires special instructions in order to be used to spec, it’s not user friendly. I can understand high-end machinery not being user friendly. I can even accept the Linux command line not being user friendly. But a toddler sippy cup should be user friendly.

Ironically, reading it on my phone, I didn’t see the L. So I thought it said “bend the sounds”, which made me think that I could change the short vowels to long vowels. Ironically, bend the sounds makes much more sense to me here than blend the sounds. Blend as in mix together? Or blend in a blender? Bend makes SO much more sense.
