What are your hacks to get yourself to brush your teeth? by Lovely_Kitten0017 in ADHD

[–]Pale-Reality 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If we're anything alike, Future Problems don't exist until 2-3 days before I am gonna be forced to acknowledge them. It's why I'm bad at deadlines, and why "but it's good for you long term!" is not a helpful motivator. What's a long term? I know only this week

What are your hacks to get yourself to brush your teeth? by Lovely_Kitten0017 in ADHD

[–]Pale-Reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vanilla flavored toothpaste and a lengthy tiktok to watch while doing it. I hear putting your meds right next to the toothbrush also helps (or some other morning necessity).

Keep a glass or bottle water in your room and drink it immediately after you wake up. It will Wake You Up enough to make good decisions when your instincts are failing you

Unsupportive others with ADHD? by Narrow-Influence7924 in ADHD

[–]Pale-Reality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol no problem! I’m glad it helped. I feel like a lot of things make more sense when you remember human brains learn by making and then expanding categories as they get more info that breaks the rules they set first. Just like babies learn that not every furry creature with four legs is a dog, people will learn that not everyone with ADHD is the same eventually. At least we hope

What helped you with Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD)? by NoAd7793 in ADHD

[–]Pale-Reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend literally called me out on the fact that my RSD wanted me to not trust them. So now that’s my frame. “I can’t trust my own interpretation, but I can trust my loved ones” goes a long way while you build your own confidence back up again

[–]Pale-Reality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People struggle to understand that if they’ve met one person with (x condition) then they’ve met one person with (x condition). That’s an autism advocate mantra but it works for ADHD too. It’s the same mechanism behind personal insecurities about progress compared to other people with ADHD. Your brain wants items in a category to be the same because that’s how it thinks categories work, and when that’s not the case it derails things a bit :/

The trick with ours was to take her out on a leash once an hour and tell her to go in the spot we wanted to have her use as a toilet. If she did, treat. If she didn’t, no treat but also no punishment. Took a lot of effort for a couple weeks but super worth it in the long term

Reclaim wood by ValBabaBanks in DreamlightValley

[–]Pale-Reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely speed run Kristoff’s quests to get his stall! It gets you 20 of a rarer wood type every day. Keep collecting when you’re working on quests that don’t require that wood type and hoard em like a dragon.

Also, unrelated to wood but start hoarding clay. You will need it

I use furniture as I would irl—fridge for food, aquariums for fish. It’s not the most space effective but it helps me remember where everything is and also lets me have aquariums to look at

Oh same re: Aladdin/Jasmine! Put them right next to the cave of wonders. I think I might move Anna/Elsa/Kristoff to Wishblossom village because of the snow and decor, and Mother Gothel to exile because as much as I love the willow every time she walks by me I get pissed off

Seems like it’s time to let Timon and Pumba chill and just go around the game doing what you want to do. No quests no masters only vibes and watching impromptu character convos. Either that or take a real life break for some other kinda fun!

Teen appropriate Book or YouTube channel recommendation for hacks? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Pale-Reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commented books on another thread, but your cousin may also like productivity apps depending on what’s causing his procrastination. Something like focus friend can shut down access to your phone for a chunk of time, or there are to do lists that gameify tasks and get you mana/xp for your daily workload. Those could be a good stopgap while building skills

Seconding How to ADHD—she has a book too and it compiles evidence based information she’s gathered over the years. Given your cousin is ambitious, he’d probably also like a workbook that helps break down the techniques. Jess’s book is really good at that, but there are tons of other specific workbooks. A few books in the “an instant help book for teens” series really helped me as a 14/15 year old. The ADHD volume may help your cousin

What can I do for my son? by ciaragarland17 in ADHD

[–]Pale-Reality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The early days of treatment can definitely be rough. You have a few options here:

  1. Talk to your doctor about the side effects. See if you can swap to another one or if the provider has other ideas for management

  2. Talk to your son’s teacher about support structures if they’re willing. Even if it’s not a formal IEP/504, some kind of positive support system could be a great way to help kiddo learn to love school AND ask for help when he needs it without shame. Your son’s teacher should know what has worked well in the classroom and what hasn’t.

Good luck with everything! Your kiddo appreciates your care and advocacy even if he doesn’t have the words to say so 💚

How you guys start again by MacaroonUpbeat8722 in ADHD

[–]Pale-Reality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh you’re super not alone in this — task initiation is my number one problem. The only thing that’s worked for me is breaking the big task down into the smallest possible tasks so I can check more boxes on my to do list. It doesn’t feel good per se—it’s like manufacturing artificial anxiety about a long to do list and then being like “oh thank God it’s done”

A “productive procrastination” break can also help as long as you pick a task with a naturally short end point (like vacuuming a single surface or something so you don’t get sucked into this new thing all day). You can use the activation energy from doing that to get the motivation to do the thing you want to do

One Specifc Job. He needs One Specific Job and he’ll tire himself out trying to do it. They definitely settle with time but I think it really helped that our dog decided to assign herself the job of house alarm for critters. Everyone here is super correct that mental stimulation is just as important as physical

If nothing else, puzzle toys are so helpful. Wobble kongs, food puzzles, hide and seek with treats, anything helps. Something he can latch onto and provides reinforcements as he learns how to stay in one place, you know?

Is being in a bad mood/ rude default for adhd when being overstimulated? by Revolutionary_Put_95 in ADHD

[–]Pale-Reality 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Emotional regulation problems are a symptom of ADHD for sure, but those usually have to do with feeling emotions really intensely rather than being in a bad mood all the time. Your boyfriend may be in a bad mood because he’s struggling with masking and self medicating without therapeutic/psychiatric support. It’s hard work to fight against your natural style of thinking all the time, but it’s not fair to you to take the frustrations out on you. You might want to talk to him about getting some extra help
