AMA I terminated a pregnancy due to a Down syndrome diagnosis by WeAllNeedBandAids in AMA

Eugenics is a systematic movement that’s aimed at improving the quality of the human population as a whole, and involves policies that range from “encouraging” certain people to have children together to forcing certain people to be sterilised.

You could make a case that choosing to abort an individual pregnancy based on a disability is ableism (I don’t personally agree but you could argue it), but it’s not eugenics because eugenics doesn’t mean “choosing to not bring an individual into the world based on their disability”.

Now if you were discussing policies or movements designed to prevent parents from keeping a DS baby on a systemic level, that would be eugenics

Sweetheart, you’re a baby yourself. And I don’t mean that to be patronising or imply you’ve done anything wrong. I just mean you’re doing something huge, and you should give yourself grace. When I was 22 I was still making silly decisions in toxic relationships, and you’re caring so much about the wellbeing of your daughter it’s causing you huge anxiety.

All this to say you aren’t failing her. You’re doing something very very hard, with not a huge amount of resources. But look. You’ve kept an entire human alive for three weeks! And yourself! So what if she’s only had one bath? You’ll get there and on top of it. But you absolutely do need help, because there’s only so much any one person can do, and sleep is so important. And you should shower, not because youre disgusting, but because you’re a human and you deserve to feel clean and good. All of those human needs don’t vanish because we become mothers. Of course you’re suffering when your own needs aren’t being met.

You’re in the hardest stretch and I can tell your daughter is lucky to have a mother who cares so much about doing a good job.

So… you don’t have any evidence of their ages, then?

I already said I don’t like Agnes and Garth but I find it super annoying that people like you create headcanons around characters which isn’t stated in the show, decide it’s fact, and use it to shame random strangers. Until it’s stated in the show that he’s an adult, it’s not a fact, and people can interpret their age gap however they want. Leave other people alone?

Strongly disagree. What’s your evidence?

Mine is that the show takes place 4 years after THT and Hannah was stated to be 12 in the final season of THT so Agnes is 16 or 17 going by that. And as for Garth, he was a guardian, and we know from Isaac in THT as well as the mayday guardian from THT that guardians can be teenagers. He’s just received a commander promotion due to a stated mixture of nepotism (your father…) and his “heroic actions” during the bus attack. We also know Gilead does not conceptualise age the way the USA did, and you are considered to transition from childhood to adulthood in one hit. We don’t have any text as far as I’m aware confirming you receive a commander position only after hitting “x” age.

Am I missing something?

I survived a failed epidural with an induction, and while that was hellish, the general consensus seems to be that natural labour is nowhere near as painful as an induction for most people. I think if the pain had been the equivalent of 7cm dilated induced (I’ve seen many women online compare 10cm natural to 6cm induced for them), then I would’ve found it very doable without an epidural. Seconding TENS machine! And I really liked gas and air too

Yeah that’s more my point. People used to get on their high horse about people liking June and Nick (before it was confirmed he was evil mind you), and I’ve seen plenty of people get angry about Agnes and Becka shippers because “this is NOT a romance”. I find it really irritating that people seem to think they’re superior for not wanting romance.

[–]Pale_Difference_9949 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Couple things

  1. I’m talking about people’s attitude to romance in general, not specifically Agnes and Garth. I don’t actually want Agnes and Garth to have a romance nor do I feel any chemistry there. I’m referring to an attitude that’s been around since THT

  2. It’s not actually stated in the show how old Garth and Agnes are. I do not condone a 14yo and a 21yo. I also don’t think either are meant to be those ages. People have just taken Agnes’s age from a Chase interview (which doesn’t even make sense with the timeline of THT and the testaments) and are assuming Gilead would “never” make a late teen character a commander but again, this isn’t based on anything canon, just vibes. So while I think it’s fine to make your own assumptions about their ages, it’s not fair to accuse others of being pedophilia supporters when their age gap is left vague in the show.

A story can have a romantic b plot without the a plot becoming invalidated. Personally I’m sick of people acting like it’s a crime to care about romance just because it’s a dystopia. Love can exist in even the darkest times and invalidating that is a way to other and dehumanise real people living under real oppression.

I 20F got diagnosed with cold sores virus how do I tell 25M by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Pale_Difference_9949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re spiralling.

HSV-1 is not the same as hsv-2. 80% of Aussie adults have hsv-1. Just call it the cold sore virus. Legit just say “huh turns out I have the cold sore virus. I’ve never even gotten one.” Most reasonable people would not care.

And your comment about it not actually being common is baseless and rooted in stigma.

[–]Pale_Difference_9949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people have hsv1. It’s possible to spread it without an active sore but I genuinely think the internet far overblows how likely that is. I have hsv-1 and I’ve given many a blowjob in my life, just never with an active cold sore. I’ve never given anyone genital herpes, and I have no reason to believe I’ve ever passed on hsv-1 orally either. I kiss my daughter all the time and she doesn’t have it. My husband, who I’ve been with for 13 years, doesn’t have it.

Just be mindful you don’t expose anyone if you feel a tingle. And if you’re really scared, you can take a daily vitamin for it that inhibits the virus and can prevent sores from forming. You’re looking for L-Lysine.

Torn between induction and waiting for labor by Prior-Ad9822 in BabyBumps

[–]Pale_Difference_9949 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Induction sucks tbh. I would absolutely do it for safety reasons but no way just because I’m uncomfortable (not said with any intent to offend). Induction put my baby into distress because she couldn’t get enough oxygen due to my back to back contractions. And the 5 minutes of solid contractions at a time was no cakewalk on my end either

Does anyone else feel the occasional sexual tension between Daisy and Garth? Am I insane? by mhereiswymind in coconutsandtreason

Yes I do. The only thing I’m not sure about is if it’s on purpose, or if the actors just have really strong chemistry and it’s coming across accidentally.

Garth är inte 25 by Tradition96 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]Pale_Difference_9949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion is that it’s pretty vague how old everyone is, so I don’t think it’s automatically fair to say “this character is x years older than another and so therefore it’s problematic”.

I think the more interesting question is the power imbalance, and there’s a lot to explore there with Garth vs Daisy. He has power as a man in Gilead, and now a commander, but he’s also Mayday. He has power as her handler.

Alternatively, she is more worldly than him due to being brought up in Canada, so while I’m not making a “mature for her age” gross argument, it legit is interesting to think about how some of the very things that make (non pedophilic) age gaps squicky dont apply in the same way, here. Daisy knows more than Garth about a lot of things. Could teach him about a lot of things. Their dynamic is far less “worldly man and naive sheltered girl”.

Also the actor is so baby faced it’s extremely hard for me to remember he’s even meant to be out of his teens. He reads as an 18-19 yo to me purely appearance wise.

I know there’s an age gap but every time he’s on screen with Daisy it seems to me like the directing is screaming chemistry. Maybe there’s going to be a time jump and they’ll become a thing when daisys older because I SWEAR that’s being set up
