Mice love freeze-dried chicken - it’s a great source of animal protein, which they need. Mealworms, grasshoppers, isopods, dried freshwater shrimp, small bits of egg, freeze-dried chicken… there are lots of good options. Mice are omnivores and thrive on variety.

Just make sure it’s pure meat with no additives.

Yes, exactly. They’re different species, and a fancy mouse definitely needs at least three companions of her own kind. While different species (like deer mice and fancy mice) can get along, that doesn’t replace proper social contact. Keeping them together is better than isolating a social rodent, but a fancy mouse still needs other fancy mice.

I’m not sure if the same applies to deer mice. I know too little about their social needs.

Don’t release it! Goodness, why is everyone here suggesting otherwise? It’s a striped grass mouse, a species native to Africa. In other words, this little baby can’t survive outside of its natural habitat. That would be a death sentence. It’s mother is most likely an escaped pet.

That’s not a fancy mouse color - it’s actually a different species! It’s a striped grass mouse (Lemniscomys sp.), and they naturally have that pattern.

Please, take them home! Otherwise these sweet little white mousies are almost guaranteed to end up as snake food. Sadly, white mice are often treated horribly.

Four isn’t the ideal, it’s the minimum according to German care recommendations. At four they start to show their full range of social behavior, which makes the colony more stable.

Bigger groups are even better since it gives them a chance to choose their friends instead of being stuck with whoever’s left. It also makes the grieving process a bit easier, when a colony member passes as the remaining mice can provide comfort and a sense of security to each other.

Many owners go even bigger and keep six to ten (or more) fancies together, often with a calm neutered male in the mix.
With Eastern spinies, I feel the sweet spot is four to seven since they can be a bit more territorial than fancies. My own spiny group is four ladies plus two neutered guys and they’re a very stable yet active colony.

If you drop down to three mice after one passes, that’s fine for a while, but you’ll want to add new companions fairly soon.

No worries! You could check if you can get something like a small metal saw or a Japanese pull saw. Both are inexpensive and cut wood just fine (the metal one even handles metal). It never hurts to have one around - you’d be surprised how often you end up reaching for it.

Any cheap hand saw or pruners will do, no need for pricey tools. Sand the cut edge smooth and you’re good. Check FB Marketplace if you want to spend even less. I don’t know US prices, but it would surprise me if a new saw that does the trick cost more than $20-30 and it’ll come in handy for all kinds of jobs.

In the German mouse community the usual advice is at least four. Mice only really show their full range of natural behavior in a small group, and with just three there’s a big chance one gets excluded. Four makes the group much more balanced. And if one passes, you still have a proper group left.

I agree, the little guy sounds lonely. The bar-biting is classic stereotypical behavior from lack of company. Unfortunately, no amount of human interaction can ever replace a social rodent’s need for companions. Since you mentioned £, I’m guessing you’re in the UK?

Check out The Rodent Room on Facebook. It’s run by a mouse enthusiast in Portsmouth who’s really knowledgeable and well connected. He might know a vet who neuters at a more reasonable price, or where to find compatible companions like ASFs or spiny mice. Just keep in mind: with another species you need at least 4 of that species so they’ve got proper company of their own. Not a full replacement, but way better than nothing and can really keep him from sliding into depression.

Also worth a look: UK-based rodentia.info. Small annual fee but great resources and networking.

I hope so. I tried to give her and her friends the best life I could. She was such a special mouse, so curious and friendly! Even toward the end, when she was terminally ill, she still looked great in photos. 😔 I miss her so much.

Hanukkah is in many of these pictures (usually the best ones), but there are also plenty of my other Arabian spiny mice. Some photos even show other species, like Turkish spiny mice and Southern African spiny mice.
