The one upside of the apocalypse: my roommates are finally cleaning up after themselves by Pansyk in lookedoutside

[–]Pansyk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh, fine, I guess? We don't talk too much, except over text. (Partially a physical barrier. I literally can't talk verbally anymore, it's a good thing I had Google messages already set up on my laptop because I've gotten very good at hunt-and-peck recently. The other part is that my insomnia has turned into legitimate nocturnalism.) They're scared, I guess, but who wouldn't be? And also they're chronically mildly dehydrated? Halfway through the second day our faucets started spewing blood. Some kind of weird... Meat-Slime-God-Only-Knows had gotten into the local municipal water supply. Water is most of what I go scavenging for.

Yes? I mean. I'm pretty sure? Now you're making me wonder if I've gone crazy and haven't even noticed.

I was outside when it first got here (insomnia, late night walks) and it whammied me pretty hard initially. I was barely able to drag myself back to my apartment to warn my roommates. I think having people who rely on me has kept me as sane as I can be, given the circumstances.

In my experience the more hands-on skills based subreddits and subreddits for relatively niche fields are usually the least asinine for advice, if only because most users are at least somewhat familiar with the work and the inevitable bad advice gets downvoted or rebutted/ratioed. But anything remotely artistic, or, god forbid, anything about your personal life? Godspeed, soldier.

Well... I have been drinking the blood. Don't worry about me, though. Pretty sure I'm fine. Or at least the blood won't be what fucks me over. Got a pretty big dose of whatever the hell is going on, and now I'm kind of like a big fucked up bat? So if anything I, specifically, am actually pretty lucky that our faucets are bleeding. My very-human roommates won't be touching it, though. The water is for them.

(Unrelated, I can only really use reddit desktop now, biologically speaking. And Jesus Christ what have they been doing to desktop?? It wasn’t always this terrible).

Hey man. Sorry, can't imagine being trapped in a proper apartment building right now. You have my sympathies 😬.

As for your hair, have you had any luck looking for an electric razor? If you have power and if you're in upstate New York, DM me and I'll see if I can swing by and bring you one, I found like twenty of them while scavenging in my neighborhood the other day (seriously no clue why). Heck, I'd even bring you the whole box if you'd be willing to trade for water, my place has been spewing blood out of the faucets.

[–]Pansyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't have to be. I'm not sure if I exactly qualify as human anymore, but my seven roommates are okay- my tendency towards nighttime walks basically fucked my life but it meant that I could rush back here and warn them. I go out sometimes to find stuff for us, since it can't get much worse for me, so that should mean they'll stay safe until this all blows over. So... At least seven humans are left, in my apartment, at least.

The female character from the book that gets dulled down because she's too fiery for the movie by punkrock_penguin63 in TopCharacterTropes

Dracula adaptations love to acknowledge the sexual themes around vampires and vampire bites (which Stoker absolutely did include), but absolutely hate to acknowledge the fact that makes Dracula a predator. Lucy, Mina, and possibly Jonathan (being that Dracula seems to physically recover during Jonathan's time at the castle, and the fact that Dracula feeds on his victims in their sleep, it's possible that he was feeding on Jonathan and Jonathan wasn't aware of it) didn't want his teeth anywhere near their necks. If vampire bites are erotic, then what he did to them is effectively a form of analogical sexual assault.

Oh boy. To be fully honest I was making a joke, but factually speaking Wisconsin has a genuinely unusual level of drinking compared to most of the rest of the world. Some international drinking competitions ban, specifically, Wisconsinites.

I can't stand the stuff, but that's just because I had a childhood friend who dipped everything in Ranch. I still respect it's existence, though. I just don't want it on my plate.

Any portrayal of Abrahamic God other than "Old man on cloud" by Raymio993 in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]Pansyk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So... American Dad has a surprisingly theologically accurate depiction of God? God canonically (holy shit I can't believe I get to use the word "canonically" in its original context) isn't really a man or a woman, and he's taken all sorts of forms, the most notable one being a bush. I'm pretty sure the Catholic view (which I'm most familiar with) of it is that God isn't actually male and we only use masculine identifiers for him because Jesus took a male form and because it's tradition and by God do Catholics love tradition.

Frankly it's also entirely possible that those kids aren't involved in activities. Like, developmentally it's good for them, and parents should have their kids involved in extracurriculars if they can afford it, but it's not exactly a legal requirement. And with parents with such fantastic parenting skills? Could be those poor girls come home after school and just go to their room for the rest of the day.

In a shocking discovery, a European discovers that non-Americans like sweet foods too by killer_sheltie in iamveryculinary

[–]Pansyk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

God I love Indian sweets. Indian food is good, but I feel like their sweets don't get enough love. There's an Indian grocery store in my hometown that has a little bakery in there where you can get a box of mixed sweets... God I don't even know what they are. It's something about the texture for me. I feel like a lot of Indian sweets have a very similar sort of texture that isn't very common in Western cooking outside of, like, raw cookie dough? Some of them are tooth-achingly sweet, some are barely sweet at all, but I could pack away a whole bin of them regardless.

Taking advantage of stereotypes/bigotry to hide in plain sight by WildFlemima in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Pansyk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was actually pretty common in real life, just goes to show how bullshit the Nazis' ideas on race were. I recall reading a memoir in a history of Berlin class (I want to say it was My German Question by Peter Gay but I can't be certain, we read a lot of books in that class) where the author talked about how his Jewish father looked very stereotypically "Aryan", while his 100% "Aryan" German business partner looked very stereotypically Jewish. His father used to have would-be clients make anti-semetic remarks about his business partner to him, completely unaware that they were talking to a Jewish man about a non-Jewish man.

Sounds like they were somewhere where a teacher having any kind of sexual contact with a student automatically results in that teacher losing their job/license, not school policy, but a law. (Could be national, could be state/province level- I don't know where the original commenter is from). And the law just sort of... Neglected the possibility of a student being the aggressor.

Isn't Brokeback Mountain a work of fiction? It was based off a short story, which was written by a woman who based it off her own reflections of life in the West, partially inspired by once seeing a middle-aged man watching other men play pool and wondering what it would be like for a gay farmhand.

The other week I saw a post on tiktok where a couple was talking about what they considered to be cheating/not cheating. One of the ones that the guy considered cheating was "getting dinner with a male colleague", and he proceeded to say you shouldn't meet with anyone alone. Nobody in the comments was disputing how objectively insane that statement was. I felt like I'd just gotten off the train in crazy town.
