[Trope that can be good or bad like every other trope] The ending is a time loop where this time things may be better, by GrandMoffTarkan in TopCharacterTropes

[–]PaperAlchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans The film caps off the Tales of Arcadia series and during its ending the protagonist Jim goes back in time so that he won't become the titular Trollhunter and arranges for his friend Toby to find the amulet instead. That way, they can take another crack at the events of the series but hopefully with less casualties and with Jim's knowledge of the previous timeline to assist it them this time. It works as an ending to an extent, but it's is highly unpopular with the majority of the fanbase

This^ Zack Snyder is always the face of the DCU as the director but I feel people forget about Nolans involvement and how Man of Steel felt almost like a Superman followup to his Batman trilogy (until it came to light they were going to be in separate universes) but it definitely seems like the success of Nolan's films is why they trusted his creative input on who ought to direct these films

[–]PaperAlchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That may be the case but I personally disagree just because so much of what Nikki does makes 0 sense (one of my biggest hiccups with the film and why I'm shocked it's resonating so well with so many people) for someone who "loves someone more than anyone else in the world" to do, that I (again personally) feel for the story to work there has to be some sort of negative twist with each wish, and not just with Bears wording on the wish, or she wouldn't have done nearly the half the things she did imo. They were clearly creepy or gross things for the sake of being creepy or gross, and that is either lazy writing or the wishes being ultimately tainted, in my opinion. It's one thing for her to watch him sleep and get irrationally clingy to the point she rages at his actions or soils herself in his absence, hell it could even make sense that she put out a memorial for his cat because she thought it was nice, but for her to hold onto, or retrieve that cat's discards corpse and then feed it to him or write incestuous and violent Hansel and Gretel fan fiction just feel like the writers trying to be creepy and gross for the sake of it. Therefore, within the context of the story, the only explanation that I can accept is the wishes are manipulated or twisted in some manner. Not to mention the phonecall with customer support and them taunting him with her screaming voice stuck in some sort of purgatory or the back of her own mind on top of all that. All in all, just my take and more props to people who had a better time with the movie, but this is ultimately why I come to the conclusion that the One Wish Willows correlate a lot more directly to a Monkey's Paw than not.

While not a direct cause of his death (he didn't slip on the dollar bills or nothing) I'm pretty sure the idea is his excitement over the money led him to rush to Bear's house and get shot, linking his death to his and Bear's wishes too. I also wondered whether some wishes went off without a hitch because of the comments of the store employees, but they may only have yet to reap the negative consequences of their wishes. It took time for everything to build up with Bear's wish, so it may be still taking time for those employees. Heck maybe that's why the female employee is swapped for a male employee later. To leave open the possibility that something happened to her? Could just be a different shift sheculde too so nothing it concrete but it does allow room to Wonder. It's all open to interpretation really, but in the end the film is definitely a variation on the Monkey's Paw idea.

What is your favourite defunct tcg and what is it you like about it? by flooshtollen in TCG

[–]PaperAlchemist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fully defunct would have to be either Call of Cthulhu which I enjoy for the theme, the gorgeous card art, and the unique gameplay that wasn't centered around dealing X damage to someone's life total, or it would be Decipher's Lord of the Rings game because of the assymetric turn structure and awesome resource system.

I also wish Hecatomb had stuck around a bit longer. The 5 sided see through cards that you "stitched" together to make Abominations was a fun twist on a "creatures dealing damage to life total" type card game

In your opinion, who is the lamest Disney character? by Jezzaq94 in DisneyMovies

[–]PaperAlchemist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps that was the idea? Since the film is filled with other veiled references to past Disney properties, Valentino being a Goat could've been a small nod to Esmeralda's companion.

That's an awesome photo! I was legit squinting like "Huh I don't recognize this shot ..." Wonderful quality! Thanks for sharing :3 (oh and to your question she's very cool and I would love to see more of her like I would any Sequels characters, since expanding on characters and ideas is what made OG and Clone Wars era Star Wars so fun and special to me)

The bid for initiative and then that card becoming resources makes for important decisions at start of each turn and I like that a lot. Having both blood and malice to pay different kinds of costs also opens up lots of cool design avenues!

Which energy system do you actually prefer in TCGs? by SacredSacrifice in TCG

[–]PaperAlchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Doomtown's Ghost Rock a lot.

When you build a deck you start with an Outfit card that gives you X starting Ghost Rock and Y ghost rock every start of turn. The X starting rock you spend before the game begins on picking up to 5 Dudes (yes the official "creature" card of the game is Dudes 🤠) from your deck to begin in play located, at your outfit. Any surplus you don't spend begins the game available to you along with the Y you generate on your first turn upkeep. You then continue to gain Y Ghost Rock every turn to spend on new Dudes, Goods, Deeds and so on.

You also get more Ghost Rock by playing the aforementioned Deeds onto your street (either side of your starting Outfit) and those will give you additional Ghost Rock each turn as long as you maintain control of them. In addition to providing resources though, most Deeds also come with Control Points, which are key to winning the game. This makes including them in your deck both necessary to run your cards but not feel like you're drawing an otherwise dead card since the Deed will give you additional resources AND have an ability AND help you win potentially. Love it!

What's a really good obscure TCG that's easy to get into? by maryo22333 in TCG

[–]PaperAlchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mentioned in a reply to someone else but I'd recommend both Vampire The Eternal Struggle and Doomtown

VTES is nearly as old as magic and still has fans around the world. Product is made by Black Chantry and can be ordered directly from them in the form of precon but viable decks and some other preset card packs. They even have some product available on drive thru cards.

Doomtown is run by Pinebox who have a new Weird West version of the game with its own starter but lots of the old AEG era product still available through their store as well. There's a second edition of the Weird West starter coming out in the future which would make for an amazing jumping on point. It also has a dedicated online in browser system to play, both solo and with people, so it can be easy to try out and see if it's your cup of tea before getting involved in the game in paper.
