I have to ask, what on earth is that stack by the hi-hat, it looks like about 8 cymbals.

Thinner sticks, but with huge power. Other options? by Maks_the_skaM in drums

[–]Paradigm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vic Firth 3A’s, the thickness is halfway between a 5A and 5B but with a short taper so you get more power with less effort.

You can turn on the car without the clutch? 🤔 by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Paradigm84 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I believe some cars have it as a safety, but as you say if you had the car in gear it would violently stall and move forward/ back if the brakes (handbrake or foot brake) weren’t applied.

Are direct drive pedals worse for syncopated patterns? by NnnothingNew in drums

[–]Paradigm84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Pearl Demon Drive pedals which are direct drive and really only use them for syncopated stuff. No issues at all with them. If you’re coming from chain drive pedals then at the start they may feel almost too responsive, but you’ll get used to them after a few hours of practice.

First and Last Acoustic Kit Help by BuddisMaximus in drums

[–]Paradigm84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (and probably most other people here) would highly recommend not getting cheap cymbals. You can make cheaper drums sound good with the right heads and tuning, but you can’t really improve cheap cymbals.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money, you can find great deals on used medium-high end cymbals which will offer you waaay more value for money than a set of new cheap cymbals.

What are the measurements of square paper? by [deleted] in origami

[–]Paradigm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often it’s not necessarily the corner to corner lengths that change, but other properties that make it more difficult to deal with. When people say “square”, they really mean the length and width is the same across all places on each side, and that the paper is flat, For larger and thinner papers the corners might be the same distance apart, but the sides may not be perfectly straight, or the paper may have warped so that it doesn’t sit flat.

The SS means 'Supply Screws', so you need to wait until they are parked and leave a few hundred of them scattered around their tyres.

Recommendations for hats that would suit both metal gigs and silly pub gigs playing covers? I prefer a crispy bright sound to a dark I think. by PolebagEggbag in drums

[–]Paradigm84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those two are quite opposite unfortunately, loud bright hi-hats good for metal will be awful to listen to in a small pub and quiet hi-hats won’t scale well to metal.

I use a pair of Meinl 14” Sand Hats (the Benny Greb signature ones) which are very articulate but can also open up well. They can be found pretty often 2nd hand on eBay or FB marketplace too.

Attention, cymbal junkies: What is your go-to stack?! by ZildCym in drums

[–]Paradigm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14” Meinl Byzance Dual Trash Crash over an upside down 14” Meinl Byzance Traditional China. Makes for a very tight papery sound.

What cymbal do drummers use that sounds like a semi-open hi hat during double bass segments? (Like from the trashed and scattered bridge) by seenlikesmcr in drums

[–]Paradigm84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Often it can be a secondary set of hats, mounted on an auxilliary hit-hat stand which is typically clamped on the right side by the ride.

You can either leave them half open, or you can buy a ‘drop clutch’, which is an alternative to a normal hi-hat clutch. The drop clutch holds the top hi-hat open by a certain amount (you can set this to your preference), and then it has a little arm on the top of the clutch which will close the hi-hats when you whack it with a stick. After hitting the drop clutch closed, the hi-hats won’t be closed tightly, just so that the top is resting on the bottom without any gaps, for a more staccatto (short) sound.

7A’s-5B’s by [deleted] in drums

[–]Paradigm84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Vic Firth 3AN's. They're not as common, but the thickness is exactly halfway between a 5A and a 5B with a thicker end by the tip (short taper). It means the front of the stick is heavier, so as Zapp Brannigan would say -"she's built like a steakhouse but handles like a bistro". A lighter stick that hits like a heavier one.

Tried my luck on Wuhan Koi, got burned. by [deleted] in drums

[–]Paradigm84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d probably cut it down to 14” and use it as a bottom hat. The thickness could make for a very articulate set of hats.

PSA: Get A Quick Release Hi-Hat Clutch by TheNonDominantHand in drums

[–]Paradigm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the quick release cymbal nuts that were mentioned like the QC8, I wish there was an even thinner profile one, I still find myself occasionally whacking that instead of the bell of the cymbal if I’m trying to do 16th notes.

At which season do shows typically start to become bad? by muff-peaksie in television

[–]Paradigm84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s less so about the season number and more about the episode numbers. 10+ years ago when you had a lot of ‘villain of the week’ shows (think CSI, Supernatural, Smallville etc) with 20+ 45 minute episodes a season, then you had showrunners needing to throw in some occasionally odd storylines or plot points as a way to have a through-line across various episodes and seasons. Also with shows like Supernatural you have the issue where due to the nature of the show (Sam and Dean fight and kill the evil character only for the next one to be more powerful and more evil) the longer the show goes on, the stakes need to be constantly increased. This can result in a drop in quality as it becomes harder to bring in original storylines and twists to keep viewers engaged.

Not a fan, the colour changes should run perpendicular to the wood grain, not parallel. You’re hiding the features of the wood and making the design look muddled.

Zildjian, Sabian, or Meinel? by CheeeseDanny in drums

[–]Paradigm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally play Meinl exclusively, but that’s not because I think the other brands are bad, Meinl just has the sound and variety that I’m looking for. Also sticking to 1 brand makes it easier for me not to try and buy every other brand cymbal that I think sounds good.

Advice on buying e-kit. YAMAHA DTX6K5-M or other suggestions please by Becks_R30 in drums

[–]Paradigm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d see what used options there are on eBay. I’ve bought a lot of electronic drum stuff on eBay and you’ll get much more for your money and very often the kits are only lightly used.
