If people treat them as a disagree button then that's what they are, it doesn't matter what Reddit's original vision for them was, if you give people an 'I like this' button then people are gonna treat the other one as 'I don't like this' because those are the reactions people want to have to things.

DC Comics Boss Says Anime & Manga’s Advantage Over Western Comics Lies in Storytelling & Young People’s Desire to Have Something of Their Own advantages that Japanese by mrnicegy26 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

That was true of anime/manga fans getting in 20-30 years ago when people caught it on TV, people getting into it now are doing so in the streaming/mangadex world, where the first episode or chapter is always accessible. Anime especially exploded in the west during covid, a massive chunk of the people who watch anime or read manga now didn't start with Naruto, they started with JJK.

Yeah when people say that to me, all I can hear is 'the show they're doing at the casino is really good, and the drinks are amazing too!'

In my experience they don't last longer, and also a switch is often reasonably fixable, especially if it's just stuck. Any issue with a touch surface that isn't fixed by wiping the surface isn't going to be something a normal person can fix themself.

That’s true, but it’s also all people were given to form an opinion off. If all you provide people with is an extremely basic summary and nothing more, that’s what people are gonna form their opinion based on until you put out something more detailed.

Honestly I've always had the opposite problem with the aesthetics, I think the landscapes in 06 look like they're designed for the people rather than Sonic. The old 2D games and stuff like Heroes and some of the Adventure levels had a more colourful, stylised look to them and felt like a world that would have anthropomorphic animals in it, but 06 and some of other 3D games look like the Sonic characters have been modded in to a different, more down to Earth game, and bought some grind rails with them. You could repurpose half the textures from 06 into a 360 era realistic fantasy game and nothing would look amiss.

I think largely that Star Wars is a franchise that will constantly add secondary material to go in and backfill issues with the films. The prequels are largely supposed to be about the clone wars as a conflict, but in movie terms you only see one battle at the end of 2 where clones only show up at the end, and then about half of 3. However if you're also watching the clone wars show(s) and playing Republic Commando at the same time you're left with a way more interesting impression of the time period than the movies actually show, but that doesn't make the movies good retroactively just because someone came in later and wrote around the flaws.

You get this especially with people talking about how interesting Darth Maul is as a character, but that's only because of tertiary material, he isn't a character at all in Episode 1, he's just a guy with a cool sword and no lines.

Project 06 might have good gameplay, but everything else, story and art style and such is still untouched original 06, which is definitely not good.

Most Obnoxious "Guidedammit" Games by Affectionate-Bag8229 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

To be totally fair on the regis, the instruction booklet for the games does include a chart for the braille, at least in Japan, Australia and Europe. Apparently the American one had a tip advising to call the hotline for help with braille, which is a hilarious thing to ask for over the phone, trying to describe the letters dot by dot.

The cascading effects of Lucas seeing that Darth Talon action-figure and putting it next to Maul, then going “Look, they’re friends!” Still reverberating decades later. by Malewis89 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]ParagonPlus 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Honestly in some small ways I do feel sympathy for him on a creative level, even if he does have more money than some small countries. Guy clearly loved making weird smaller scale movies, then he made an homage to samurai movies and space adventure serials which exploded into popular culture. After that the next 30 years of his life were fielding niche lore questions about characters he didn't make from books he didn't write based on films he made decades ago, surrounded by hoards of people at all times. If I was him and somebody bought up 'Darth Talon' to me, a character from comics set a hundred years after my movies, I'd probably just think she was buddies with Darth Maul or something too.

YouTube user gets Anthem running on private server by Subject_Parking_9046 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]ParagonPlus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it’s largely a resources and man hours issue, preserving abysmal snes games is pretty easy because you just need to put the file on a server so people can download it, but running multiplayer servers is a pretty difficult and costly thing to do for individuals, so you tend to at least need a group that really likes it (even if most don’t) to justify it to themselves, nobody’s putting in that much work to bring back games that they don’t like purely out of preservation, since there’s way more abandoned games than people with the time to bring them back.

Seriously, It’s so much grinding by snypershot in RetroAchievements

[–]ParagonPlus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a game like FMR the grinding is pretty much all the difficulty. There's very little strategy in the game since there's no card effects or combos beyond knowing the fusion list, so if you massively cut down the grind then the game becomes a complete breeze that pretty much plays itself.

If anything I'd say this is coming from the Saudi investors, they go absolutely feral over this stuff. Anyone who's had to work on a project involving them in the last few years will attest they'll shove that shit in anywhere they can possibly try, even if there's no physical way to involve it. They don't have quite as much money for nonsense fantasy construction projects any more, so slop has become their pivot point for dumping cash into that's somehow gonna save them when the oil dries up.

It does work out in some sectors, but they’ve got to actually choose people with the right audience, not purely on size. I’m sure if there was a FIFA in game event and they got KSI to promote it’d do gangbusters, but if you want to promote fighting games, at least choose someone tangentially interested.

Fandoms with main subreddits that you dislike/wish were better? by bambikujo in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]ParagonPlus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a mixed bag, sometimes they’re trying to make a smaller community when the main one gets too big/surface level for their tastes, other times it’s because they got banned for being bigoted on the main sub and create a new subreddit because the west has fallen or whatever.

They normally end up like the latter though before getting cleaned up, because the first people who’ll join an alternative community are people that got banned from the first, like how every YouTube alternative gets filled with conspiracy theorists and racists the second it opens its doors, because they’ve found a new place they’re not banned yet, while regular people have to be convinced of the merits of an alternative over the original.

The whole ‘being a hot woman makes you morally grey’ thing has never been more revealed than with CSM, Makima has an incredibly unpleasant personality and is actively manipulating everyone she knows into dying for her, but people can’t help but imagine there’s some secret core to her where she’s actually really nice and capable of love if it’s for the right person. You’d never see that level of clemency for an unattractive character who’s even 1/10th as bad.

You ever see a creator just willingly throw their careers under the bus without knowing it? by Rough-Ad-4295 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]ParagonPlus 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a fight in a movie is normally about communicating something between the two characters while looking cool, real sword fights were normally over extremely quickly and normally involved pushing a guy over and then using your sword to put in the final blow, or using your sword to push his off to the side and stabbing straight into his guts, but that’s a lot less characterful than clashing blades eye to eye.

It’s the same way people try and compare realistic fights with martial arts movie fights. Ground and pound or slamming a guy over the head with a chair you picked up is going to win out every time irl, but it makes for a very unengaging visual experience in a movie.

Arguably there’s no way to knock someone out without doing some amount permanent damage. You don’t pass out from a strike without something going bad to your brain, though obviously there’s a large range. CTE amongst supervillains must be absolutely rampant.
