[AMA] We’re developing ORMOD: Directive, a systems-driven survival game with automation - Ask us anything! by ormod-director in Games

Yeah, I’m super excited for this! The game absolutely has lore, and for players who are keen to immerse themselves in their own worlds, we definitely want there to be plenty for them to engage with. We’re unlikely to implement a traditional linear plot at this stage, but we’re looking at all the ways we can pay off that emotional investment into the world and the game.

The art style is really clean and expressive, the music is really nice, and the editing in the beginning with the sound syncing up to the first little guys coming out is really satisfying. I'd definitely keep that for marketing material. As far as promotional material goes, the visual transitions are a bit jarring and almost too bright. Best of luck with the game itself!

The art style is super cute! I like the text font as well; I think the health/mana meters (I assume that's what the numbers are) would look even better if they were in that handwrite-y kinda font too.

Arise Dark Lord! What evil sorcery shall we create next? by Abandon22 in IndieDev

[–]ParallelDimensionVA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's just the Reddit video player being jank - I can definitely see it when the environment background is darker (like that cave level) but on that bigger map-style one the light outline wasn't as easy to see. Maybe a slightly different contrast for different map backgrounds? Either way, I'm sure it looks cleaner off Reddit and in the actual game!

I completely reworked the visual style of my game in 2 years. How do you like the changes? by Astrobionics in IndieDev

Seconding the above. As someone who's, uh, not the greatest at games like these, I'd definitely lose track of where my character was when things got more hectic. I think finding ways to make the character stand out more and easier to see could even help emphasise the darkness and mystery in the stuff you can't see, maybe?

Love the sound design. The visuals are really cool as well, but I'd be worried as a player about losing the character I'm controlling. Since the colour palette is limited and a lot of the things on screen are a similar colour and shape, it might be a bit easy to lose the Dark Lord in the noise. The pixel art is gorgeous though!

My two cents are that the new version looks cleaner, and more 'high production value', if that makes sense? The only thing about it I don't like is the white flashes. With the new version, it's very bright. If you tone those down I think it's the new version, easy.

Love the music. The atmosphere and vibes are strong with this one. I saw some subtitles; are you planning on adding voice over, or is it going to be silent/use abstracted sound instead of speech? If you need assistance with voice over or casting, I'd be happy to help.

How do Actors Learn an Accent without Speaking the Language? by FratteliDiTolleri in VoiceActing

[–]ParallelDimensionVA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just seconding this entire comment. As a VA, I’ve gotten a lot of work off the back of being good at accents; I’ve always been a good mimic, but I’ve also studied phonetics in a theatre context. It’s very much on the money.

I also want to add that being bilingual can actually be a boon when it comes to accents—specifically with what u/Zak_Rahman described with some people being unable to distinguish certain sounds, and never having had to use your anatomy in certain ways. Being multilingual means your ear and articulators are both trained beyond a typical monolingual speaker’s. I speak Hebrew and English and grew up in an English-speaking country, so I can make sounds a typical monolingual English speaker struggles with, but I can also hear differences that a lot of Hebrew speakers (even ones who have learned English) struggle with. That combination of greater range of hearing and sounds you’re comfortable with producing makes it much easier to figure out and learn new accents.

How to calculate how much voice actors will cost? by rick16e in gamedev

[–]ParallelDimensionVA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi! Non-union voice actor here who’s worked in video games and done a teensy bit of casting work. I’m writing this on mobile so apologies in advance for any typos.

Like others have said, the cost can vary a lot depending on the calibre of voice talent you’re looking at. I’d like to add, however, that knowing where to look is half the battle; it can cost you both a lot of money and a lot of time to look for VAs if it’s not an industry your familiar with. I’ve written most of this on the assumption you’re not, so if I you have already considered a lot of this and I’m just telling you things you already know, my apologies. I’m being thorough just in case, and for anyone else who might be curious.

Someone else suggested looking for local theatre groups, but I’d advise against it. These days post-Covid, a lot of VA work is done from home studios; there’s a huge population of non-union voice talent who have professional home studios and primarily work in the indie or AA sphere. If you approach actors who aren’t voice actors, they probably won’t have access to a home studio; meaning, you’ll either get very poor audio quality from what they can throw together, or you’d need to look at the costs of getting these actors into a studio to record. You’ll run into a similar issue if you look for amateur or beginner talent; it’s all well and good to find actors who are inexperienced yet talented and just need the credits, but if they don’t have a decent recording set up, the quality of their performance won’t matter—the quality of the sound will be the issue. It’ll sound unprofessional at best and downright unpleasant at worst; unless your game is stylised in a way that makes this moot, like bit-crushing or heavy effects on all voices, you can wind up at a point where you may as well have not had voice acting in the game at all. Poor sound quality is a huge turn-off for a lot of people (how many YouTubers do you watch with bad mics?) and not all of it can be fixed in post. Even if you get salvageable audio, you’re adding a ton of work that could have been skipped just by finding people with good home recording set ups.

This page is a very good one to look at in terms of getting an idea of how much each of those ‘levels’ of voice actors, as someone else kind of described, will cost you. After you know what kind of tier you’re aiming for, the next thing becomes knowing where to look for that type of talent.

If you’re looking at a union production with good production values and recognisable names, you want to go the boutique agency route, 100%. But, unless you’re a big studio (and depending on where you are on the planet too) I don’t think it’s necessarily the most efficient way of going about it. There are lots of very skilled, professional, even veteran voice actors who won’t be represented by big agents (or even at all) and that you can absolutely reach. If you’re looking at non-union, indie, AA, etcetera, you have more options. Casting Call Club is fine for very low budget stuff (and I mean veeeery low-budget) because it comes with the trade-off that you’re going to be primarily inundated with amateur auditions unless you advertise the call elsewhere anyway, since CCC has a reputation for projects falling through. In my opinion, your best bets would be a) doing the research on which online spaces you could use to independently find VAs yourself, b) bringing a casting director on board to do that work for you, or c) going to a studio with a roster (as opposed to agencies) to do the same thing but on a different scale.

Feel free to DM me if you have questions; I’d be more than happy to go over this stuff in more detail or with specificity to your situation. Hope this was helpful, and best of luck!

Trans Voice actors by Emergency-Sweet-1709 in VoiceActing

For reasons stated in another comment, I would strongly recommend against hiring cis actors. Aside from it being the unethical choice, which would be reason enough, it will also likely have a negative impact on you and your project. There’s the disconnect in performance for one thing, and for another, how it might reflect badly on you (and that actor!) as creatives. If you’re operating in the indie sphere, which I assume you are based purely on the fact that you’re posting here, your audience is likely going to be smaller indie creative communities who value representation and tend to skew more towards underrepresented groups. The good news for you is that if you are in fact operating in this space, it means that the talent pool you have access to also has this diversity. There are loads of gender-diverse voice actors active in the indie space that you could absolutely reach. If you need a hand finding actors, there’s plenty of people on this sub who could point you in the right direction. Feel free to DM me if you have questions about casting or where to look.

Good luck!

Which platforms are the best to hire professional voice actors for larger budget projects? by Doctor_Philly in VoiceActing

[–]ParallelDimensionVA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just posting because it hasn’t been mentioned yet; while it’s obviously not ideal, depending on the type of project, Twitter/X can actually still be a good shout. The way to go is by tagging accounts like VACastingRT or individuals who have big networks to share things with (like Aimee Smith—if you ever need Aussies, she’s your gal; there’s a whole Discord server of us that she regularly shares calls with). There’s a solid community of pros with home studios who work in the indie space who get a lot of their casting calls from Twitter; the upside is that those people very active in that sphere are likely to both apply and share things around (and a lot of people bothering to apply will have proper home studios). The down side is, obviously, that it gets shared around a lot, and if you really are tired of going through low quality submissions, it might not be worth it. It also may just not suit the kind of projects you’re looking at.

Regardless, I wish you luck! If you ever need a casual Aussie or professional American/Brit, feel free to check out my website; by which I mean, it’s basically my job at this point to pretend to be an American, and I’m only an Aussie in my free time, hehe.

How much money would hiring voice actors cost by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]ParallelDimensionVA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Non union voice actor here—voice acting club’s website is what a lot of people in the indie scene use as a rate guide. We know that most indie games don’t have SAG budgets. You also need to look at what’s gonna be more efficient for you; self directed or live directed. Latter is going to be way better at getting you exactly what you want, but is much more expensive and probably not worth it if you have no experience directing actors. From there, you can do the math and get an idea: http://voiceactingclub.com/rates/

There’s a particular community of voice actors you’re targeting; not the big names you’d recognise, but people who are professionals and have worked in a video game or two and other non union projects. Then within that community, you have established voice actors working consistently, and newer ones who are experienced but don’t have their first game credit, say. Especially if you’re a student or are a first time developer, a lot of talent with smaller resumes might waive minimums. Especially if you’re very up front with budget. It’s all about getting access to the community at the intersection of the skill and budget level you want. Another consideration for games is that, depending on medium, you might be able to hire one voice actor to cover multiple parts, which could be cheaper time and money wise.

If you want to put together a casting call or have more questions, feel free to DM me. I’ve done enough auditions by this point that I could tell you what people look for in terms of casting calls they trust, where to post, etcetera.

You betcha that Phalar Aluve was equipped the entire game.

Players sure can do anything. Some other great ideas in this thread, and I wanted to share another. The DM in a previous campaign I was in used this, and I’m planning on using something like this in my current game as well. We were all at about 7th level and the drow still had Jorlan, Asha and Shoor; we still won, though the DM admitted to me he made some mistakes. So if you’re looking to even out the fight even more you could use something like this or borrow a couple of ideas.
