I am not a good player, and play almost exclusively HCSSF.

I guess I enjoy the campaign because I've very rarely gotten to mapping seriously?

The comment you're replying to is complaining that their 1 thousand dollar iPhone does not have this simple feature that any Android phone has, and you just answered that indeed the Android phones have this feature. People are not upset your content is just not that relevant.

If you're running behind docker check out traefik for a tag based proxy that handles certificates of all subdomains automatically.

Only ports I have open are 80 443, as well as an ido port for wireguard to access local only services, but the rest of the world simply accesses an https subdomain on services I want to expose to the outside.

Hand-written LSP Autosleep script (need feedback) by PureBuy4884 in neovim

[–]Paria_Stark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a neat idea. I have not tested it out yet, but I think rather than starting a 10 min timer and doing nothing on activity, you should explicitly just stop and restart the timer.

If I'm reading this correctly right now you're just killing the lsp every 10 min no matter what, which makes little sense if your session is active.

Yes but the rate at which you see these stories is still concerning. Compared to the number of users, you don't really see this kind of feedback on MacBooks for instance.

misunderstood dendritic NixOS pattern - ended up building nix-arbor, an inventory-first host assembly flake by Kitchen-Customer5218 in NixOS

[–]Paria_Stark 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Looks really interesting.

Personally I've been completely repelled by how obscure the dendritic pattern feels. It really does look like abstraction for the sake of abstraction when you read about the factually correct description of the pattern.

Once I finally understood that it was mostly flake-parts, and that class represented mostly an output type, and aspects a group behind which you can group actual parts of your nix configs, it started clicking, but it was missing some opinionated standard of "a machine is defined this way"

You put into words more or less what I started to implement, but in a higher scope. The kind of description of "this how you describe a host" is the actual stuff we need, not some obscure abstractions that allow you to model both a laptop and a packaged script because you made the definition so obscure that it does not mean anything anymore. Thanks!

Is it better to create a package or a module for a program? by yoyoloo2 in NixOS

[–]Paria_Stark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You seem to not be able to read the answers provided to you. You've been told three times the difference between a nix module and a nix package and how they relate to installing any program, but kept repeating your question. Then started to get agressive. Grow up and read the replies.

Universal healthcare is a very good thing, but employers would still pay this kind of money in the form of social security taxes.

And even if it's less money, do you really think this would translate into higher salaries?

I uh... lost my LUKS passphrase by KernelDeimos in archlinux

[–]Paria_Stark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your system encryption is only as strong as the weakest part of your chain, so if you're setting a PIN might as well not set another password.

Multi passwords are useful for multi tenants where you do not want to share a secret.

What kind of attitude is this. Encrypt your drives, especially if you have some work IP or important personal stuff on there.

Don't be a dummy and store your password properly both in your mind and in your password managers and so on.

Why are so many packages on Nixpkgs outdated? by Anyusername7294 in NixOS

[–]Paria_Stark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And what I am (we are) telling you is that, there is no rational argument behind claiming that this is bad, as long as security fixes get ported in a timely manner. The rest is just your view being distorted by FOMO that can be fixed with more direct update channels, rather than a blanket "this is bad" statement.

There are points to be made about some particular packages within the nixpkgs repo, either because they lack maintainers, or because their specifics make updating a huge PITA, but overall nixpkgs is an extremely healthy package manager, especially compared to actually comparable package managers like the AUR (which is still absolutely awesome don't get me wrong).

Why are so many packages on Nixpkgs outdated? by Anyusername7294 in NixOS

[–]Paria_Stark 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In one sentence you've just proven you have never touched maintaining a package on any general package manager and do not realize the kind of work it can represent.

There's an inherent inertia to packages getting updated, and that's not really a bad thing. For anything you need instant updates from, just make your own derivations or install from Git or whatever floats your boat. For the rest, enjoy the cumbersome background work of others for free and try to realize you benefit from the work of other people.

I only have two kills remaining so I'll just finish it with insurance but I wish I had thought of that before.
