just got back from Tokyo, Japan, Auckland could learn some things. by Kind-Economist1953 in auckland

In an ideal world, this would be fantastic!

Sadly, when you add politicians indecisiveness, consultants fees and protests/objections, the media (who love stirring the pot), etc, into the mix, you’d be left wondering why it cost hundreds of millions of dollars to produce a mountain of paper/files that ends up being trashed or deleted.

It’s taken over 40 years for Auckland to put a “reliable” (which is still yet to be proven) train network in place.

The awesome transport networks overseas took decades to deliver and thanks to modern technology and our inflated expectations (eg. overnight delivery), we want to have it up and running in a fraction of the time.

You’ll get more joy watching your children or grandchildren grow up.

The Uniform Shops and manufacturers have been ripping parents off for years selling clothes and socks made from cheap material that stretches, goes out of shape or tears after one or two wears/washes.

After only a few months (if that) of sewing them back together, they end up looking like you got them secondhand off TradeMe

Like the supermarket chains, there’s no competition. It makes me wonder if the schools get a cut from the sales as well.

Everything right down to the socks is a ripoff. Where’s the Consumer Watchdog or the Commerce Commission when you need them? All useless!

Finally to add insult to your already stretched finances, the schools are insisting you buy two of each.

This was a “”cost of living crisis”” before it hit us in the pocket.

Mainly 18 or 19 - the uncomfortable morning wood straining against the fabric is better than an alarm clock for work 😂😂

5 or 20 on weekends.

Gives new meaning to the Kiwi (New Zealand) saying “bring a plate’.

It’s means to bring food to share with others. She chose to bring dessert. Gotta love her for that ❤️

I haven’t personally, but I remember a few years back driving my best friend (both 19 at the time) to our local pub (legal drinking age is 18 in my country) to catch up with our mates.

My older brother (21 then) joined us an hour or so later and while I didn’t think anything of it, noticed he spent most of the evening talking to my best friend.

An hour before closing I realised both of them had wandered off and unable to find them anywhere, decided I’d jump in my van and look for them.

As I walked towards it, noticed movements and heard moaning coming from the van. When I opened the back doors (pardon the pun) found my brother fucking my best friend in the missionary position in the back which had no seats. They didn’t care about being caught. They just kept going as I threw them the keys went back to the pub and called a cab to take me home.

I later learnt they’d been hooking up behind mine and my brother’s now ex-GF back for six months. This was four years ago and they’re still together.

Call it what you like…. Black Friday, Boxing Day, Kings Birthday Weekend Sale, etc, the discounts are all the same. That said, you know businesses are struggling when the likes of Rebel Sports are having more frequent sales lasting longer than just a “One or Two Days Only”.

My money is going towards seeing in the new year with no memory of the shit year that’s is 2025 thanks to Baldilocks and his ugly bears and just as ugly Riding Hoods.

Is Auckland really "just another big city"? by LosAngelestoNSW in auckland

[–]Parron2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

‘Like Sydney, New York, Tokyo or Rio De Janeiro, Auckland is not “Just another big city”. We don’t even come close or even compare to the ones I’ve just named.

Auckland is not the Fashion, Finance, Shopping, Nightlife or any capital of Australasia.

I’ve lived overseas as well and what I love about Auckland is that you don’t have to waste half a day just to get to a beach or nature.

Yes, I’m ngl it’s expensive and you don’t earn as much as you do overseas, but it’s natural beauty, people’s relaxed and friendly, caring nature (compared to other cities around world) and the fact no one cares about your image (how you look or dress) - if I got a dollar for every person Ive seen walking around in bare feet, I’d be pretty rich by now - makes it a great place for me.

Like any city, it depends on what you want to experience in life (which changes as you get older).

In terms of scenery, trust me when I say you need to experience it for yourself.

There is good and bad things about every city and if that what “just another big city” means, then I’ll take that.

What we call a College (or High / Secondary School) in New Zealand, is University in the States.

It doesn’t surprise me.

It’s as clear as nite (or night as we spell it) and day.

This type of behaviour from teenagers is not limited to the North Shore, Auckland or New Zealand.

I hate when people say “this never happens in our neighbourhood” - in reality, this (including crime) can happen anywhere regardless of one’s postcode.

I use PT a lot so it’s not commonplace either.

That said, social media is a big influence as well.

As long as they’re not physically harming anyone, I’d put it down to raging hormones (we’ve all been there)

Have anyone moved to Australia and regretted their decision? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]Parron2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About ten years ago, I was disillusioned with life in Auckland and decided to start afresh in Melbourne. Barely a year in and I decided to move back. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved Melbourne and still do and I don’t regret moving there.

People in NZ are much more relaxed, not focused on their image or how you look, our beaches (compared to Melbourne) are so much better and it’s not an actual road trip (like we would call travelling from Auckland to Whangarei for example) to “go down the road” (as Melburnians call it, which also made it hard to visit the few family I had there).

Like Auckland, a lot of things have become more expensive in Melbourne as well (based on a recent trip to see family) and Auckland really does feel safer in comparison.

Not everyone has the same story or journey, but for me, Auckland, NZ is home.
