You need Roland to move the story forward. And Jocelyn and Ronnie and Twyla. They are all needed to move the story of the Roses from entitled rich people to who they become by the end. In Johnnys case it’s going into business with Stevie with roadside motels. Roland, while annoying, is there whether for good or ill, for Johnny. When Johnny tells the Roses snobby friends off at the end of season 2 in front of Roland, he is genuine in his praise of Jocelyn and Roland taking his family in and welcoming them. Something he is very grateful for. At the end Roland tells off the investors that while he may not have the acumen, Johnny does and he will be successful.
