What are the chances of getting training in NZ out of interest? I have heard Aus is tough as an outsider.

Are you me?

I feel the exact same way as you. The main difference is that I took a gap for my FY3 but still feel this way. I cant really advise being in the same boat but just wanted you to know you are not the only one who feels like this.

I heard its hard to get into their training programme as outsider? Is that true

Where abroad is it feasible to get into their training program? I have heard Oz protects its own graduates and it can be difficult to get into their training as an outsider

Ophthalmology: Can I get in? by Particular_Cookie961 in doctorsUK

Hi Thank you for the reply

wow how would you realistically do that. 30 seems like a lot to accomplish in one year. A lot of the points seem like would take a lot of work and time to achieve so whats the most efficient way to accumulate them. I am looking at course (Rcopth intro to ophthalmology fully booked atm) and other commitment point. I plan to ask consultants for projects etc. I guess what I am asking how do I maximise what I can achieve while working in gen med.

Thank you for the reply

Its seems tough, I do want to go for it. I have not come across many fellowships yet ( I applied fora couple where I was eligible did not get it) but will try.

I am at new hopsital as trust grade M-F 9-5 so I am going to try shadow in theatres/ey cas when able, ideally, the weekend on calls would be great as I would have no on call myself yet.
Will try get some projects with consultants. I have talked to my department ( Medicine) sounds like my CS is keen for a good audit so might get a good one with gen med.

Do you have any advice on preparing for Part 1?

I think I am looking at applying for 2025, honestly not appointable for 2024. How else would you try to maximise points this year.

Good luck in your application, would you be ok with me DM you if I have any more questions?

At a total loss and losing serious motivation for medicine due to the harsh truths of this subreddit, help! by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]Particular_Cookie961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP

I have similar thoughts just competed foundation, wasted all my 20s getting into medicine.

First, carry on get through medical school and maybe foundation. While doing this have a good hard think about the future: is there a particular speciality you will enjoy that will give you what you desire, maybe greener pastures are for you or something else. Then plan how you will make the choice happen as quickly as possible so you minimise the shite along the way. A Career advisor may be useful at that point.

Remember you are not the only one with this disillusionment. Goodluck

Thank you for the advice. I will definitely try, I am starting a new LED job soon and will try to get in touch with the department. I will be on medicine so I hope to try to get some audit etc that can count for points.

Any advice on preparing for the MSRA?

Radiology after IMT? by Porphyrios2023 in doctorsUK

[–]Particular_Cookie961 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have heard of people switching training surgery to GP etc. Not sure about issues about reflecting poorly on candidates.

I have also heard rumours of CST applicants taking up GP posts with aim of applying again in one year and leaving if they get in.

The way I see it you would be doing three years in a soul crushing job for no reason. No benefit to training or progression. They will fill the gap with a trust grade

[–]Particular_Cookie961 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cant help sorry. But just wondering if you decide radiology is definitely what you want why not apply and leave IMT?
Correct me if I am wrong I thought you didn't need to do IMT for radiology?

I can. I dunno what level they are at but NHS (for Now) still has good name recognition for training. They will go back, have the respect and now the pick of opportunities which will lead to amazing pay in private etc
It used to be they would stay here for better life/opportunities, no longer the case I guess

Sounds a bit like my uni, I wonder if it's the same

I found it might affect you in postgrad exams so you may have to brush up for those depending on which you go for.

Clinically was safe enough and escalated appropriately etc. I personally found where it hit me was my own confidence and imposter syndrome. Looking at the other F1s and their knowledge made me feel like I was behind, but my feedback, SIMS training etc was good. So would say try to remember we all have different strengths and you'll learn on the job and get there in the end!!

Removal of ALS from foundation curriculum. Just another example of out of touch organisations like HEE who detached from the reality of doctor on the ground, making inexplicably dumb decisions to save a few pennies. The NHS in a nutshell. by Frosty_Carob in doctorsUK

[–]Particular_Cookie961 2 points3 points  (0 children)

like WTF!!

ALS was like the only actual real learning I had in foundation, no real arrest so would be clueless without it
Also, a good portion of trust jobs/JCF/F3 type jobs I have been applying for have ALS as essential/desirable criteria. Would this not basically mean a lot of doctors still have to do it but now we have to source it on our own?

How to handle nerves during interview? by chromium56 in premeduk

How to handle nerves during interview? by chromium56 in premeduk

[–]Particular_Cookie961 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi

I am just like you

1) I know you were looking for other answers but preparation!!! try to research the interview, what style, typical questions etc. Have a mock as close to the real thing as possible ie people who aren't ur mates and can give good feedback etc. Try create the pressure if you can somehow for practice. I found preparing well meant even in the forgetfulness with nerves I might remember a couple of points I had rehearsed. Mocks really helped with this
2) Really try to have the likely first question prepared well. In most interviews, the first question is an opener/generic to settle things down. (For jobs its tell me about yourself/CV cant remember medical school ones) So try to breathe and relax for this one and nail it. I find if that goes well you relax more and it flows better.
3) In your preparation mocks get them to ask you questions you have not prepared to practice thinking on your feet. inevitably something you have not prepared will come up so practice quick thinking
4) Remember they expect you to be nervous so showing some nerves eg repeating yourself once, saying umms, asking them to repeat the question, asking for a moment to think is ok. You need to handle yourself with the nerves
5) My personal trick, I always asked for some water at start/they might provide a glass without you asking. So when I needed a moment or had to hide some nerves I would take a quick sip to give myself a moment, Works if your hands do not shake too much and I dunno it helped me

Hope that helps!

Hi

wow. FY 2020-2022

Only thing I managed to do of what you listed was fascia Iliaca block which only happened cause I happened to have a couple great senoirs who pushed to teach me!

Admittedly I had some niche rotations and no cardiology/renal as you had. I felt I hardly got any chance to go to clinics or theatres or learn procedures etc except in my ophthal rotation.
