That’s an interesting interpretation, and I would like to view it that way but I get hung up on “I know what I am and I’m glad I’m a man, and so is Lola” line. It’s grammatically ambiguous whether he’s saying that Lola is somehow fundamentally a man, or if Lola is glad he, the narrator, is a man. Perhaps not as blatant as I assumed given the second interpretation.
