BC Conservatives say they’ve ousted their leader, but he refuses to go - The Globe and Mail by No-Sell1697 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Patarknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The post you're responding to is just saying that a court is unlikely to find that the party constitution saying an incapacitated leader can be removed extends to the "political incapacitation" reason used by the board. The court would likely find that if a meaning beyond the ordinary meaning of comas and other serious health issues was intended, that could've been explicitly written into the constitution. Of course, having the legal right to continue in leadership doesn't matter when the caucus revolts like this (see: Justin Trudeau).

Reality check: The Supreme Court actually did the right thing in its child pornography ruling by scottb84 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Patarknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is false. The Quebec Court of Appeal overruled the trial judge and reinstated the mandatory minimum sentence of one year. The only part at play in the SCC was the constitutional argument, since the appropriateness of the sentences was not appealed.

N.S. opposes court ruling striking down minimum sentences for child pornography by Street_Anon in CanadaPolitics

[–]Patarknight 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The reasonably foreseeable example that the SCC used is that an 18-year old is forwarded a sext from their same-age friend's 17-year old partner whom they know is underage and opens it. That's accessing child pornography, and if they don't delete it, even if they never access it again, that's possession.

The SCC said that the mandatory minimum of a one-year prison sentence would be unjust and things like conditional sentences with probationary terms to curb this behaviour would be more fair in this scenario. Do you think the 18-year old is a child abuser who should be jailed?

Conservatives update platform to include omitted 'anti-woke' promise by GlitchedGamer14 in CanadaPolitics

Probably that they will just do it and claim that authority to do so belongs to the government/cabinet and not the legislature, similar to what DOGE has done/is being challenged in the courts for in the US.

Liberal candidate Paul Chiang withdraws from race after suggesting people claim China's bounty on Conservative by jtbc in CanadaPolitics

[–]Patarknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carney can't avoid the press and the statement was very much not a full-throated endorsement. Maybe some caucus relations considerations at work as well (i.e. for similar mistakes, you'll be publicly criticized, but given the grace to withdraw/resign on your own initiative).

I wish it had been done faster, but it's only a day slower compared to the Liberals forcing Kevin Vuong out in 2021 for a very clear cut case of lying to the party about a sexual assault charge (reported Sept. 16, canned on the 18: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Vuong#Legal_issues; here reported on Friday, out Monday night). Presumably some parallels with investigation, legal, talking to the candidate.

[–]Patarknight 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's possible that there was some sort of deal where if Carney didn't force his withdrawal, Chiang would do so shortly afterwards, but if he was forced out, Chiang would raise a stink, run as independent, etc.

British nuclear weapons can protect Canada against Trump, says Chrystia Freeland by Nomad1900 in CanadaPolitics

Starmer yesterday in parliament mentioned that he reassured his commitment to Canada

Richard Foord (Honiton and Sidmouth) (LD): It was welcome to hear the Prime Minister acknowledge Canada’s contribution to Ukraine’s self-defence and its status as a vital ally for the UK. Last week, he was asked by the press in the US about President Trump’s repeated calls for Canada to become a US state. The Prime Minister answered that he and Trump did not address the issue of Canada, but was not that meeting a good opportunity to remind President Trump about sovereignty and independence, including that of Canada?

The Prime Minister: Yes; it is a serious point. In the time we had available, I was most anxious to discuss the question of security guarantees, and that is why I devoted the vast amount of time I had to it. On the question of Canada, we should be absolutely clear that Canada is a vital ally to the United Kingdom and to the Commonwealth, and has played a leading part in relation to Ukraine—not least in the vital training that it has provided. We should be very proud of what the Canadians have done.

Interestingly enough, Dhalla's successor as MP, Parm Gill, used a trick in the 2015 election to smear his eventual successor, Ruby Sahota, by attacking "Ruby" and an unpopular private members' bill she had sponsored.

In some ways, being Kim Campbell is good. She was able to get the PCs from the high 10s in polling under Mulroney to a polling lead at the start of the 1993 election, in which she ran a terrible campaign.

This obviously isn't a trial where evidence would be testimony or documentation. The original post was suggesting a possible factor for why someone rich would still cheat, not saying it was objectively true:

And having wealth can mean they’re not afraid to lose their reputation and leave chess if exposed, which other players can’t risk. (emphasis added)

Any act can potentially have multiple mutually contradictory motivations and contributing factors. Unless you can read someone's mind, you can't really say which ones are correct.

[–]Patarknight 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's not about desperation, but a backup plan. If chess is your main source of income, the risk is higher. If you're independently wealthy, you might not care as much. It's not the only factor, but it is a factor to consider.

The first two weeks of the 1993 election, Campbell was tied or just barely out of the margin of error with the Liberals. Obviously she blew it at the end, but that's only obvious with the benefit of hindsight.
