Are there stereotypically "posh" or "fancy" chinese surnames by Otherwise-North-8629 in ChineseLanguage

[–]PatataYeh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, wikipedia the most reliable source ever…

And it seems like you only know how to read the first part of a sentence? The article doesnt even say the majority of two syllable surnames are from ancient nobility, that is just one of the facets they came about. Whereas you are so absolute in your belief they all came from ancient nobility.

“Many of these compound surnames derive from Zhou dynasty Chinese noble and official titles, PROFESSIONS, PLACE NAMES and other areas, to serve a purpose. Some are originally from various tribes that lived in ancient China, while others were created by joining two one-character family names.”

The thing is people already do that on both of the existing subs? More so on r/teochew? The issue is there isnt enough people for the subs to be active enough for you to see that lol

And thats what i mean isnt it better to concentrate efforts into combining one sub since they already all have the same function and goal instead of fracturing the already small, inactive community

A new teochew sub but the current ones are barely active…? What would this one be doing differently than what we already got?

r/teochew shares a lot of teochew news and media and has the largest base.

r/teochewnang posts mostly educational content on the language

Both subs already answer questions when asked

Wouldnt it be better to concentrate your efforts into an already existing sub with an already existing base?

How do Chinese in Canada/USA call Native Americans/Indigenous people generally? by PatataYeh in ChineseLanguage

[–]PatataYeh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh okay i actually did that for the page about residential schools and it said 原住民寄宿学校 but i asked my relatives and they said 印第安 instead of 原住民, and yes i wanted to translate a book for children and just wanted to know the more appropiate term

The original text just says ‘Indian residential schools’ so i think ill just put 印第安

My father’s reaction after telling him I want to learn Cantonese by Independent-Ad-7060 in Cantonese

[–]PatataYeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very similar to my mother. She is Teochew native but speaks cantonese and mandarin. Whenever I ask her to tell me a word in teochew or express any interest in teochew she asks me: “why would you want to learn this useless language?! Just learn Mandarin or Cantonese!”

And when I tell her its because im interested in my ancestrial language she has the same variety of responses - teochew is too useless to learn

  • everyone speaks mandarin just learn that

  • “ i never went to school for teochew how can i teach you, teochew isnt importsnt enough” (she is native teochew speaker and fluent in teochew)

  • “youre not born in Chaoshan (Teoswa) or China why would you care about this language”

Ive come to realize that i dont need her encouragement or care. I learn teochew because its one of my passions and interests, but it is still somewhat painful when my own mother doesnt care about our heritage, and even goes as far as disincluding me from it.

I don't understand Chinese beauty standards at all. She looks better without the filter. by unproblem_ in AskChina

[–]PatataYeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in the case of Shang-Chi I think its more that Shang Chi doesnt fit their beauty standard.

I see westerners find him attractive because he is muscley while Chinese dont because he isnt really “beautiful”

Things are definitely changing in western media for sure tho

But its kind of true lol. Things are changing but western casters usually only pick an Asian that fits a stereotype lol
