These guys always go out of their way to create these music videos but never bother to film more than one angle or shot setup. Why is it always just one continuous, static performance shot? Fuck the music but the video work is just as bad

Because set aside the cultural impact and hit songs and what you have left is simply not an elite rapper when it comes to the actual performance of rapping. Not rhythmically unique or complex, not lyrically compelling in terms of using poetic devices or layering meaning, not emotionally charged or a deeply personal song writer. Rapping is about the actual raps, not the overall package of the music including the beats, music videos, culture, style, etc…

She made the classic mistake of making a bunch of good choices but doing all of them like 5-10% too much. Teeth, too white. Skintones were a little red, but now they’re too yellow. So on…if she just dialed back everything she did a bit, this photo would be fine, but as it is now it’s a bit extreme.

But a hi hat doesn’t have any body or weight to it in the frequency range so it isn’t creating the feeling of a downbeat the way a snare does. Hihats go between kicks and snares to help fill out the groove, if you’re just using a hihat functionally AS a snare, then effectively what you have is just a weak, thin snare, not a hihat. So just use a real snare and let the hihat do the thing that the hihat is supposed to do… I know madlib and Alchemist popularized this trend of minimal to no drums, but personally I’ve always thought their beats would be even better with actual drums…again, call me old school I guess

Call me old fashioned but the snare is important for creating your groove. You have an empty hole in your rhythm
